I am here, been following the responses. Agree KP battery life is a little short but carry 3 spares. Presently away travelling - took KP with me K-3 III left at home.

I own a KP only because the launch of the K3Mk3 was delayed, and I was impatient, so I bought the KP- then several months later the delayed K3Mk3 was launched. I subsequently bought a K3Mk3 both the cameras replacing K50 of which I am now down to one (i did have two). So which is the better camera. For action undoubtedly the K3 but I still question whether it is as good as my daughters Canon 7D/7DMk2 which I use occasionally (I am committed to Pentax but really like the Canon). Though my main camera is now the K3Mk3 as most of my photography is action I still prefer the KP. I don't know what it is - size, lay out, tilt screen - but for anything not action based (fast focus) the KP is my preferred camera.
Looking at the KP and K3Mk3 photo threads I do think that in general the KP photos shown are better; a contentious view? So is it the camera or the person behind the camera that leads me to that view?

Occasionally I help my daughter out with her photo business at a car event. This involves shooting outdoors in all sorts of weather. They use Canon 7D and for this event a 24-105mm. I do like the 7D and in some ways prefer it to my Pentax cameras (K50, KP, K3 MK111), but it is a nightmare to use when it is raining. When you have to stand in the pouring rain for up to 7 hours, constantly moving around, whilst trying to keep the camera dry and get the shots - it is difficult. Too often you lose the battle with keeping the camera dry and then the lens misting starts. It doesn't help that you need to keep zooming in and out, so the lens is pumping damp air meaning you eventually get condensation and misting inside the lens. I haven't had the same problem with the Pentax and WR lenses. Yes I try and keep the water off but I have never yet, touch wood, had the problem with lenses misting inside and knowing it is sealed means I am more relaxed about the odd drop of water.

The Quality Control on the 55-300 PLM doesn't appear to be that good. Some people have cracking examples, I have seen some stunning images posted here, others not so good. Mine on first use looked fine, euphoria of a new purchase, then as I looked closer you could see problems, in my case anything above 200mm or outside of around F11 and images went soft. It was so annoying I bought some * lenses to do what I wanted, which have brilliant IQ but weigh a ton and cost me an arm and a leg, and don't focus anywhere as quickly as the PLM. I am tempted to purchase another 55-300 PLM as the weight and focus speed is brilliant - but this time, being a bit wiser and forewarned I will test before parting with the cash.

Though this was at 406mm I am pretty certain I had the TC 1.4 on the 150-450. For distance it works really well - I do need a monopod as my handheld are a little wobbly.

Interesting image (looking at it on Flickr). I haven't tried the K3III for Astro, for the little I have done (played at) I prefer my KP because of the flip screen. I note the stars in the center are spots but those at the edges have smeared. Is this due to lens distortion?

Stunning clarity - you are lucky having a very good 55-300 PLM. Mine goes soft above 200mm.

Shot at about 1/2 mile - I think heat haze is an issue. DFA 150-450@200mm f6.3 1/1600 iso320 cropped

There seem to be different experiences with the 55-300 PLM which I think must be down to variation in lenses. I like the 55-300 but for me it only works in a small window above 200mm and whatever I do is soft at 300, so much so that I bought a DA*60-250. The DA* is great but weighs a ton (by comparison with the PLM) and is slower at focusing, the loss in length is easily made up by IQ the downside is I miss more images (motorsport) as focus isn't as fast.

Had to go fixed focus and hope a shot would come in, as auto focus with the Tamron (17-50) couldn't keep up with the bikes as they swung round the corner and came towards me. K3Mk3 on fast fires like a machine gun. Only about one in five came in but had so many, got a few shots I am happy with. https://flic.kr/p/2nfZdj9 |

Cropped quite a bit as I had the lens set for panning on to the car as it swung around the corner, also shutter speed a bit fast so little impression of movement - but it does give a sharper image. Using the DA* 60-250 which I bought as my PLM 55-300 always left me feeling that it was soft - I think I just have a poor copy. I know the 60-250 gets some bad press but so far (touch wood) mine is behaving. I had just loaded the 1.41 firmware and it appears that the fine adjustment is slightly different. I had -7 for this lens previously (and used that for the picture). I have subsequently tested it and gone for -3. Not sure why it should change? |

I have used the 1.4xTC with the 70-210, though on a K3MK3, when taking trackside photos in Spain and very happy with the results - that got me close to the 150-450 but slightly more compact and easier to carry on luggage limits on a plane.

I have the 55-300 PLM but bought the 70-210 as, at least my copy of, the PLM was disappointing at longer lengths and below f8. Having said that I see plenty of good photos posted here at 300mm, the PLM is light and compact, and the focus is fast and silent. I still like the PLM and use it when weight is an issue.

I am just learning to use Astrotracer - as last night was clear I had a go at the Orion nebula using a KP with 150-450 image below is the first I took. This is from my back garden so not entirely clean view of the sky - there is also a lot of light pollution. I have 3D printed a Bahtinov mask to help focus but only figured out how to zoom in live view in a later set of photos so I don't think I had the focus quite right. Unless you zoom in live view I struggle to see whether the focus is correct. Later photos exhibit trails but I think that is from the elevation clamp on the tripod breaking and the whole assembly slowly sagging.
I thought I had set the lens to 400mm (the EXIF is saying 160mm? ) and set the timer to 20 seconds. With the image The only thing I have done is open the .PEF in Affinity and save as a JPEG.

My KP is coming up to 9 months old and I have noticed that the On/Off switch is getting more difficult to operate - very stiff. I am contemplating sending it back to Pentax to be checked but thought I would ask here if anybody else has had the problem?

I spent a little longer playing with settings and took the 1.4xTC off and whilst I think I was getting better images it was noticeable as I panned if the motorcycle was on a constant or slowly decreasing arc the focus would hold. Once the motorcycle was accelerating towards me the DA*60-250 struggled to keep up. I could get about 3 shots in focus then lost focus as the lens wouldn't keep up - this is the lens not the K3 III. I am sure the 55-300 PLM would have kept pace. It would have been nice to try the 150-450 as I could have done with more reach but it was just a bit too big for my hand luggage - plus I need more time down the gym. Flickr |

Happy with the DA* 60 - 250 focus isn't as fast as the 55-300 PLM but pictures just that bit crisper. |

I am no astro-photographer barely a land based one, but I do find it enjoyable trying to get a shot (read that as a snap) of the stars and planets. Saturn is on my to do list and I will be very happy if I can match yours and see the rings.

Now I know which one Jupiter is had a go at shooting at what I thought was Saturn which failed so took a quick snap of Jupiter (single shot). Moons easily visible but meant Jupiter over exposed. Turning it down so you could get some definition of Jupiter I lost the moons. But given a shot in the middle of the street with lights everywhere happy I could see some colour.
