Lens question: FA 35 vs. DFA 35
Posted By thomaskplee

Some people in a Chinese forum mentioned that for Pentax 645, DA is purely for digital, so the image circle is only covering the 44x33mm, while DFA is good for both digital and film, therefore, have larger image circle that can cover 60x45mm film size. Probably FA is for film and auto focus, then can have larger image circle to cover 60 x45mm film size too. So I hope someone can confirm if DA is having a smaller image circle compare to DFA.

In the Chinese forum, the post is discussing about using the Pentax 645 lenses for tilt and shift adjustment when using on the GFX camera which is also have 44x33mm sensor, as Kipon made a P645-GFX adapter with T&S.

Sorry, found the information on the 645 lens data base, that the 645 DA25 has a more protuded hood such that will have vignet on 60x45 film, but better for 44x33 digital sensor. Therefore, for those wish to do tile/shift, the DFA is better than DA.

Fuji GFX useage compared to 645Z

By looking at the autofocus test of the GFX below :

You Tube

It seems the Auto Focus is real slow? Much slower than 645Z type of SLR type AF, perhaps because the CMOS sensor does not have the PDAF pixels like the A7 series of Sony. So this will be a drawback when compare to 645Z. The main advantage of the GFX is the available of all kinds of adapters for using various lenses!

Both Phase One, and Hasselblad have announced their 100M pixel cameras ( using the Sony 100MP sensor), so Pentax should be coming soon!

I was able to contact the person at their Shenzhen office ( who is on Chinese New Year Holidays for two weeks from now) and he admitted that the 8 channels and A-B-C groups are not implemented on the R930 sold and there will be firmware update in the future for these features, as the necessary hardware are built-in.

Thank you so much for the user manual of Acon R930. it is strange that on the product specification, it states there are 8 channels, and there are A-B-C groups, but the user manual does not mention about how channels can be set nor anything about A-B-C groups.

Best regards

I just got a pair of Acon 930 today, and tested it on my 645Z and Metz 64 AF-1 flash and it works well for HSS by 1/4000, so it seems is a workable solution for the Pentax med format camera for HSS remote control. However, it does not come with any user manual, and I found the Acon website's link for downloading user manual does not work any more, while the company sold me the set is off for Chinese New Year holidays now, so anyone have a copy of the user manual of Acon 930 that can share with me? Now I can only power them on to work, but have no idea of how to change channel, or set ABCD groups. Will the Acon 930 able to have multi receivers for grouping?

Can 645Z use O-GPS1 and do Astrotrack

I'm still new to the Pentax system and only have the Pentax 645Z for one year. Recently heard about the beauty of using O-GSP1 on some Pentax camera and can do astrotracker function for longer period of deep space tracking (a few time longer than the 500 rule) without using the star tracking motorized devices. I just wonder if it can be used on 645Z.

645Z - Catch-in-focus?

The latest firmware version is 1.21, it is an upgrade from version1.20 which did not allow shutter release when off focus when the lenses are at AF mode ( But when using LV, then it is OK to have shutter release when AF is not locked on, so obviously there was an error on the firmware 1.20). In 1.21 you can do the pre-focus and re-frame or else.

645Z - Catch-in-focus?

Not quite sure I understand correctly of the catch-in-focus, as I did not use Pentax camera other than 645Z. What I set on my camera (like in my Canon 1Dx), I use thumb to press AF-on for focus ( with continue focus), set no AF for half shutter release, such that with a moving object, I thumb press to get focus and then release thumb to let the focus distance stays on same place, for re-framing or for waiting for the object to get in the "focus net". I use this way to shoot flying dragon-flies, because they have certain flying path pattern, so the only way catch them in focus is to stay focus on one of the "air path" that they tend to station, and wait for the fly to come. Before the latest firmware release of Pentax 645Z, there is a problem on this operations, but its been corrected in the latest firmware, and now can operate correctly, please check if you have up-dated to the latest firmware version.

645 lenses on Sony full frame E mount adapter

There is no problem using the A6000 with the P645 lenses, in fact, since Sony camera has the "Peaking Level" to help doing MF, it is quite easy to shoot and capture motions, plus the high frame speed of 11/sec, it can help fill up the short comings of 645Z ( only 3 frames/sec). Also provide a longer focal length to shoot small and far away subjects such as birds!

645 lenses on Sony full frame E mount adapter

Since I am using also Canon EOS camera and lenses, as well as Sony A mount camera such as A99, A77II, plus Sony A7r and A6000, so when I bring Pentax 645Z with lenses for travelling, I use A7r and A6000 system as back up, because Pentax 645 does not have very wide lenses, so I normally carry the Canon 14mm f2.8 and the 8-15mm fisheye lenses to use on A7r with adapter ( can do AF-S), so I also carry a P645 to EOS adaptor, so just in case, I can use the P645 lenses on my A7r as well as A6000 ( for fast frame rate per sec). So what I have are a two-step adapters, P645 to EOS, then EOS to E (FE) mount. Also I have P645 to MA ( Sony A mount) adapters, as well as the Sony A mount to E mount adapter by Sony which again is a two-step adapters from P645 to Sony E mount. Both works fine for me, and it seems more flexible in these ways.

Just up-dated the 645Z camera to firmware 1.21 and found the above mentioned "bug" disappeared. In other words, with an AF lens, and when set at AF-C and using AF knob only for AF (no half shutter AF), once stop press AF knob (using thumb) to stop the AF, it can now re-frame and do multi-shots (3 frames per sec), great!

HSS with 645D/Z

I have the new Metz 64 AF-1 flashlight for Pentax that have the HSS and works fine. The Metz 64-1 can use the external power of Metz P76 battery pack, so it can last long. However, 64 AF-1 can overheat if doing too many full power flash quickly, so if a lot of flash is required, I would still perfer to use the older Metz flash the 60 CT-4 which never have overheat problem.

Batch Process for RAW to JPG at DCU-5 ?

I am new with Pentax 645Z and the RAW processing software of Pentax - Digital Camera Utility 5, are there a way to do batch processing for converting the RAW files to JPG files? For example, I took several hundred of stage performance photos, as lighting are changing fast in a stage performance, so I took RAW+, then I use the extra JPG files to select about 200s ( the computer read JPG files fast) to fine tuning the exposure in RAW, then would like to convert all these into JPG for going further to PS for further touch-up, but I cannot find there is any batch processing function in the DCU-5, so does it means I have to do the conversion 1 by 1?

In Canon DPP, I will do the RAW tuning, then select all those files and let DPP do the batch convertion while I sleep, as it may take many hours for the convert process if there are several hundred of photos to convert.

Most DLSR camera are providing the thumb "AF" button is for the thumb to control the start/stop of AF function, for immediate control between AF-C and AF-S by using the thumb and index finger to shoot.

645Z bug? No Multi-shot at AF2 at view finder mode

In Canon ( or in Nikon) when use the AF button ( by thumb), and with AF-C, it will keep AF tracking on a moving subject, but once stop pressing the AF buton, the AF stops and then user can re-frame, just like using AF-S. It is a much better way of handling the AF. But it seems Pentax's design will not allow such usage. The problem of keep focusing when doing multi-shot, it will not allow user to re-frame. On shooting moving subjects ( like animals), to relocate focusing point and/or changing AF-C to AF-S are slowing down the shooting process.

Sony's A77 / A99 also allows such AF control ( in a opposite way, press AF button to becomes AF-S while half press shutter to do AF-C) setting for the quick tracking of moving subject while can also do re-framing once subject stops.

---------- Post added 03-21-15 at 09:58 PM ----------

BTW, just noticed on 645Z at LV, even set at AF-C, the AF is in fact AF-S, i.e. focus once only, cannot do AF tracking on an moving subject. This is why in LV, it can always do multi-shots in AF1 or AF2.

645Z bug? No Multi-shot at AF2 at view finder mode

More observation: Found that at AF2 ( AF mode is at AF-C), if keep pressing the AF button ( the thumb pressed button), then the multi-shot is enabled. So this is really a design fault on Pentax, as people using AF2 mode are mostly wish not to do continuous AF, and wish to use AF button to lock on a focused point and keep shooting, i.e. no AF again. Of course, AF mode will be at AF-C, as a lot of people using such setting to use the thumb for controlling continue AF or single time AF, without the need to change between AF-C and AF-S mode. Many professional in Canon and Nikon are doing such. However, the present design of Pentax 645Z does not allow user to do this, using AF2 setting can only do multi-shots when keeping doing auto focus!

645Z bug? No Multi-shot at AF2 at view finder mode

After using the Pentax 645Z for three months, just found one issue at the AF2 ( no half shutter AF, use the AF button for AF activations) setting that it cannot do multi-shot at view finder mode, only can do single shot. However, at LV, the multi shot operates (3 frames/sec). As I have been using MF lenses in the beginning, and not using the 645Z for motion shots, I did not aware of this issue earlier. Now that since I need to do some shots on motion, and have get hold of more FA lenses ( newly the FA 400 f5.6), then found above problem. When set at AF1 ( half shutter for AF), there is no problem of the Multi shot operations. I hope this is not a individual camera's problem, any one else that have the 645Z can you try and let me know if your camera after set at AF2, can you get multi-shots at view finder shooting? Or did I mis understand anything on the settings in menu? Or my camera have problem?

Spare Battery for 645Z

Just received the D-LI90(E) battery from B&H, it is the 3 contacts version, not 4 contacts version. In fact, the battery printed with the part number is still D-LI90, there is no (E) on it, only on outside box, it states D-LI90(E), so don't know why there is a (E) version, it seems to replace the original D-LI90. So there seems no place selling the 4 contacts version - D-LI90P, except in Japan!

The D-LI90 without "P" is the older version, with same capacity, but without the 4th contact. At B&H, they are selling both versions: The no "P" and the "(E)" versions. I just wonder the D-LI90(E) selling at B&H now whether it has the 4th contact or not. My charger have 4 contacts, so it will help fully charge the two cells inside the battery, but will work for the old version battery too.

Spare Battery for 645Z

I bought my Pentax 645Z from Japan, and come with one battery - D-LI90P (1860mAh), "P" is the newest version that have 4 contacts, while without "P" is the older version with only three contacts. Now, problem is there is no place to buy a spare D-LI90P in Asia except Japan. I contacted the Japanese seller, he claimed he has, but cannot ship to Hong Kong, as airline will not carry. Then I found in USA - B&H, they only sell a D-LI90(E), so is this (E) version same as the "P" version? When you buy the 645Z in USA or UK, what is the battery comes with it?

All these three versions of battery are 1860mAh, so capacity wise is no different, but suppose the 4th contact will make sure the cascaded battery cells can be fully charged.

645Z has long shutter lag at Live View mode

Thank you, the information is very useful!

---------- Post added 01-11-15 at 05:12 PM ----------

Well the delay is making catch of motion - like dancing, quite difficult, in Live View mode. So will have to switch to non LV for shooting motion of model. But for MF lenses ( am using several Hasselblad Zeiss V mount lenses, as I found they have much better resolution than the 67 lenses when getting pixel to pixel images at the 50M sensor), it is easier to stay in LV, as the peaking is very useful for focusing, nothing is perfect!

---------- Post added 01-11-15 at 05:51 PM ----------

Yes, it is true that 135 camera is not to compare with the mid format, and Pentax 645Z is the first one have a as easy Live View mode as the 135 camera. On the other hands, 1Dx's LV mode is still able to shoot very fast, as I have been using it quite a bit to shoot small birds ( with Nikon Reflect 2000mm f11) while using MF, and sometime also connect its HDMI output to a 7" monitor to help faster manual focusing. However, all Canon's HDMI will black out for quite a long time when shooting. Sony (both the SLT and Mirrorless) are fast and almost no black out when shooting LV with HDMI output to external monitor. But so far, Sony do not have a fast (frame/sec) full frame camera.

645Z has long shutter lag at Live View mode

The shooting of dancing was in day time in open space, no concerns of speed or lighting, just ISO 400 (using the 67 400 f4 green star white lens). Well, my past experience when shooting MF, it will be faster than any AF, as there is no need to do the locking of AF operations inside the camera. Another example, when using Canon 1Dx, the shutter lag is really shorter, so it is easy to catch the pose in a dancing, such as doing a legs spread of "-" in the air. When Sony's A77/ A99 was out three years ago, I already found all these Sony camera's shutter lag are much longer, so you need to tempo much earlier when shooting dancing and actions. Making such photograhy more difficult. Now it seems 645Z is also slow, i.e. have long shutter lag. I also used Hasselblad H4D-40 but do not felt it has such long shutter lag, though it is having shutter inside the lens, not focal plane shutter.

---------- Post added 01-07-15 at 09:15 PM ----------

Just found Canon 1Dx's shutter lag is 36-55ms, so wonder what is this lag for 645Z at non LV, and at LV.
