Yes, the infinity symbol lines up with the index mark but it actually focuses on something about 12-14 ft away. The minimum focus distance is about 43 centimeters.
I have the same feeling about the lens, someone has taken it apart and reassembled incorrectly. I think it might be a lost cause, but no big deal, I didn't pay anything for it.

Thank you. No extension tubes are attached. Yes it is adapted to Sony E mount but shows the same problem when mounted to a Pentax ME directly.
I've removed the name ring and the barrel that covers the inner workings of the lens, the one with the long indicator line that lines up with the index mark. Then I got lost as to what to do next.
I'll attach some photos, the one with the branches is taken at 12ft with the lens set to infinity.

I inherited a SMC Pentax-M-Macro 100mm f4 lens that can't focus to infinity. "Infinty" is at about 12 ft. or so. Does anyone know if that much discrepancy can be re-adjusted and if so how?

Even though I don't own a Pentax digital camera, I kept all my Pentax lenses from the film days and adapted them to my modern cameras.
I enjoy using those lenses very much.
