Yes, this is the thread that has leaned me into keeping it, albiet I don't know how they pulled even half of those shots off. ---------- Post added 01-19-16 at 11:48 AM ---------- Well yeah, I guess edges aren't that important..Even in landscapes methinks.
I was planning on making large prints of my adventures so I thought the HD might be a bit of a better choice, but certain thread has made me question this. ---------- Post added 01-19-16 at 11:49 AM ---------- Well that's a short and sweet comparison, I like it. ---------- Post added 01-19-16 at 11:50 AM ---------- I forgot I read this article, thanks for the reminder!

Mainly as a travel/landscape lens.
I don't want to venture far off from kit range I suppose as I have alot to learn, but is the HD 16-85 a noticeable notch up in terms of sharpness from the 18-135?
I'm only really interested if its an actual notch up instead of marginal.
Thanks for any info. :)

Well it wouldn't be a problem but that range would also be kind of an event lens. ---------- Post added 02-22-15 at 09:55 PM ---------- So after much debate I do prefer the 70mm range
So I've agreed to get the Sigma 70mm F2.8 or the DA70 F2.4, both are fine choices though I'll be going for the Sigma so I can have something to do macro with in my spare time, if I can't get it then the DA70 for sure.
I'm also gonna pick up a 35mm F2.4 for events, maybe a 50.
Thank you all for your replies, they've all been very helpful!

No one really, and be that as it may The Sigma I think I might be able to do more with.
I can do Macro and Portraits with it, it just kinda bugs me that Sigma says its for APS-C and full frame.
Though a rough estimate shows its just as sharp as the DA70 on similar crop sensor bodies (Theres no info for it on Pentax bodies so I used the comparable D7100)

I'm interested in this lens in particular more then my other options due to its grand focal range.
However I want to do prints and I've seen shots of it, sharpish in the center but corners are horribly bad. ---------- Post added 02-19-15 at 09:03 PM ---------- Well I'm leaning twoards the DA70 now, my only real gripe with it is the look of a pancake on a DSLR..Yes I know thats silly.
How is the Sigma 70mm F2.8 macro? It seems as sharp as the DA70mm, but with 1.1 macro and fits my form meets function desire better.
My only issue with the Sigma is well..Sigma seems to state its for full frame and APS-C, but how?
Still I have a while yet before I buy this lens but so far DA70mm is at the top
Tamrons F2.8 Macro would be up top definantly if I could get a confirmation on how that clutch thing works.
I know I'm a bit difficult when it comes to deciding these things, especially with my slight desire for a form meets function kind of deal, but I have a good two weeks before my purchase and ALL your input has been greatly appreciated thus far. :)

Good point, but most of my work would be outdoors.
I feel most of the magic lies outdoors..
As for everyone else, yeah 70mm seems to be the way to go for now..I kinda wanted the F1.4 because I've never had one plus the lens's look factor (I like my looks but I don't play all style no substance)
And if the Tamron 90 is safe to use..Then of course I might just go straight for that...But so far I think I might need a video or something to see what the clutch thing is.

Well I was going over the reviews for the lens and one review in particular stated that this is a problem with the K mount and A mount, something about disengaging the lens lock between switching to AF to MF.
They stated it even says it in the manual for the lens. ---------- Post added 02-19-15 at 03:04 AM ---------- So far I'm still kinda leaning back at the Rokinon, sure..It may be crazy to expect to do paid work with manual focus but theres just so much fun I can feel using that lens in particular.
F1.4, it looks great (I'm a form meets function kind a guy so slightly aesthetically driven) It is infact sharper then the FA 70 limited.
Still the FA is also a strong possibility, just a bit more for AF, though sacrificing that aperature I've never had before.

So for about a week now I've been weighing my options for a lens, I want a portraiture lens for a bit of paid work (Not full on professional work)
I was originally sold on the Rokinon 85mm F1.4, but one persistent man insisted I should have autofocus, so I'm going to list a few other lenses that seem ideal, but with reasons as to why I'm not sold on them..The point of this? To see if any of these reasons are as bad as they sound.
I'm aware 50mm is a portrait length but I wanted something lengthier...And I don't get to do portraits all the time so a lens that could do more then just headshots would be great for me.
My camera is the K-3, and was looking for under 500 dollars...Preferably much under that..But if its a bit under that'll have to do.
Rokinon 85mm f1.4 - I love everything about this lens ,No AF, but built for MF, is the manual focusing on this fast by chance? Is there some kind of magnifier I could use?
Tamron SP 90mm F2.8 Macro - 1.1 magnification so I can do macro when I tire of portrais, but one major problem: Switching from AF to MF can hurt you camera, lens, or both..Only for Pentax and Sony mounts.
Tamron SP 28-75MM F/2.8 Di - I hear its horribly soft wide open, I'm not a pixel peep, but to soft is to soft, otherwise a perfect range for me.
Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM - Was sold on this for a while but then noticed the 2.8-4, F4 at max range just isn't gonna cut my Bokeh needs, F2.8 would of been fine however.
SMC Pentax-DA 70mm F2.4 Limited - An alright focal length, for just portraiture and AF!...I'm Not sure what else I could use it for I was pretty fixed on a zoom after being deal broke on Rokinon.
Tamron 70-200mm F2.8 Di LD Macro - The price is indeed a bit out of my range, I could wait a bit longer and get this 70 is fine for portraits and I can shoot some wildlife with 200mm.
Anyways thats my list of considerates, the sigma would of been perfect if it was a constant aperature.
Any ideas on what I should do?

There are some k3 battery grip sales here too that aren't much more.
Now I just need to hope this sale sticks for about another week.

I might have to jump on that sale, 900 dollars off? Insanity.
A question is, will that battery grip go on a K-3 should I ever decide to upgrade to that?

Alright, thanks for the tips...As for DPI I may not quite be aware what that means, dots per inch?

Hi, I'm pretty dead set on moving to a K-3, but so far I'm hearing about some problems with them.
Something about old model/new model, should I just get a K-5iis?
Also how big could I print an image on a 16mp sensor of the K-5iis? I plan on making some 42 inch prints.

Something in primarly the 18-55 range or the 28-80 range.
The 18-135 sounds nice but I need a bit of a wider aperature, a low light general use kind of thing.
That said, may pick up the 18-135 over the 18-55 if my budget allows for it.

Eh, sorry I specified wrong, I meant a good quality short zoom lens.
Like a 18-55 but not a kit variation.

I'm no stranger to these forums, I've often been linked here for old film lens reviews.
I have a Fujifilm X-E1 and I'm converting to the Pentax K-3 once I get the money, so i thought I'd establish myself here.
I'm moving to Pentax because I have a history of being paranoid about cameras in cold weather and rainy weather, Nikon is not friendly to its DX users, and Canon I've heard bad things about.
So hello everyone! I do have one question, what's a good wide aperture short tele lens?
My goal so far:
Pentax K-3
Super Takumar 50mm F1.4
Maybe a battery grip
18-55 WR
