How image quality compares between Pentax 645: FA 45-85 f/4.5 Vs. 55 f/2.8 & 75 f/2.8

I own and have shot with all three. I haven't done extensive controlled testing between them, so these are my overall impressions from real world use: The 55mm has that micro-contrasty and ultra crisp 'pop' of modern lenses. Great center sharpness and seems to be particularly sharp in closeups, I have some portrait shots where you can see every tiny fiber in clothes or hair, it's just unreal. For landscape it's a little disappointing in that it gets softer towards the edges and I have a feeling isn't quite as sharp center as when close up but I haven't tested this. Not a total deal breaker depending on subject matter, just something to be aware of. The nice thing is that it's very light, quiet, quick AF, and weatherproof. I too find it an odd focal length on crop 645, a little too wide for standard lens use but not wide enough to feel like a true wide, so sadly although I think this lens has a lot going for it, I tend to not use it as much.

The 45-85 is surprisingly sharp for a zoom when stopped down and is my most used lens. It covers a very useful range although I do wish it was a bit longer at the long end for tighter portraits. It's generally 'great enough' such that I don't miss having the super crisp look of one of the newer lenses like the 55mm or 90mm. It's heavy but not overly so and handles well on the camera such that it's easy to just leave it on all the time as the default lens. I really hope this is the next lens update Pentax releases as a DFA with modern glass and all the new features.

The 75mm is also quite sharp and makes a nice longer standard lens. I have some great studio portraits from it that are very sharp. It is of course also very small and light, but it's finicky to manually focus if you need to due to the tiny focus ring. Bonus for being fast at f2.8. It can be a fun walk around town lens when you want to go really light, but I generally I don't find it so much more useful than the 75mm setting on the 45-85mm as it's about the same sharpness/character so I'm more likely to just take the zoom instead and then I have more flexibility.

HI, new to the forum and an excited owner of a 645z. Just trying to get everything sorted out and not sure if what I'm encountering is user error or a defect.

Just got a used FA645 45-85mm lens off ebay and I'm having trouble getting it to manually focus. The manual focus ring will not turn while on the camera. I know this is a screw motor driven lens and normally with other DSLRs like a d800, there is a switch on the camera to disengage the screw and allow manual focus. However there does not appear to be any switch of this sort of anything in the user manual I could find that might be in the menus. Can someone tell me how manual focus of FA (not DFA) lenses typically works on a 645z? Does the ring just turn freely as-is or you need to disengage the motor somehow?

The other strange part is that taking the lens off the camera, I still cannot turn the focus ring at all. Is this normal? I know with my Nikon AF lenses I can turn the focus rings on them once they're off the camera. I think this may be lens damage, but want to make sure before contacting the seller. The package arrived in terrible condition, looked like it had tire marks on it as if it was literally run over by a truck!

Thanks!
