645Z Bug with VR lenses

The stabilization takes time to engage and for the actual elements to stabilize. This happens very fast, usually is done by the time the camera locks the AF so when using the shutter button for both AF and shutter release by the time you do a full press (to release) the picture has been stabilized.

When using the back button to engage AF (with the shutter button decoupled so it doesn't engage AF at half press, just for release), when you lock on a subject and press the shutter, the stabilization never engages. If the shutter button hasn't been decoupled, when using the back button to engage AF - you get a focus lock - but if you half press the shutter then the focus has been reset and the framing you've achieved by recomposing is ruined since half pressing the shutter will now refocus on the subject.

The back button AF should engage the stabilization in the lens.

Also, I use the latest 1.21 I believe fw.

There is a problem using stabilized lenses such as the 90mm 2.8 macro together with rear button for AF.

Namely, rear button AF doesn't activate the stabilization in the lens.

Using the shutter button for AF works fine, hitting it half way starts the lens stabilization.

This is a major oversight on Ricoh's end which needs to be addressed via a fw update.

645Z raw file size

How much do you average for file sizes for the raw (DNG) images taken with your 645Z? From what I can see, I go up to 50 megabytes or so per image, no more. The Nikon 810 I also own goes up to 70 megabytes.

The Hasselblad h5d-50c based on the same Sony sensor used in the 645Z claims of file sizes of 65 megabytes for their raw format. This has a 16bit readout (the 645Z is a 14bit like the Nikon).

Does Pentax use some sort of raw cooking/compression for their files or the Nikon ones have a lot of gibberish data to have such heavy files come out as raw?

Pentax 645Z + Metz 64 AF-1 Digital

I've sent my unit to the factory service back in Germany and they've inspected it. Their reply was that they couldn't find anything out of the ordinary in terms of soldering, components etc. so they've narrowed it down to the Z. Since getting back a repaired unit, I've stopped using the secondary fill flash completely, since 2 units died on me b.c of it being on.

The 645Z is not on the approved list of cameras and they've said themselves that they don't have it to try it on and the 64AF-1d unit was never tested for work on our camera. So, I would stop using this flash unit on the Z immediately or at least disable the secondary flash.

I haven't taken many shots since receiving back the replacement, but since I had 2 die on me, you had 1, it's best to play it safe for now and start asking questions at Ricoh and Metz.

The flash was on the camera in both cases. The second flash died while trying to take a portrait shot with the head pointing upwards. It was definitely not an overheat issue from use since today it was virtually the first shot the camera took/flash fired.

Pentax 645Z + Metz 64 AF-1 Digital

I've got a serious problem with 645Z + Metz's flagship unit (Metz 64 AF-1 digital). Namely, 2 units already have died on me when used on the 645Z. The first unit was bought Dec.19.2014 in the Czech Republic (Prague). It was set in P-TTL mode with the secondary flash at 1/2. After 15 or so shots the first day, with the same setup the flash exploded (the bulb in the secondary flash died with a bang). Apart from visible shattered glass inside the secondary flash there aren't any defects. The flash won't turn on however.

At first I thought it's an isolated incident, informed Metz and they've told me to handle it with the dealer in Prague (30E fast shipping back to Prague). Meanwhile I've ordered a secondary unit from HK. Same scenario. 15 shots or thereabout the first day then after a few days not being used, the flash died on the first shot today (secondary bulb explodes with a loud bang with shattered glass inside).

I've mailed Metz again, and trying to sort things out on Ebay with the seller (the HK unit). Meanwhile, if you do have any suggestion share it here. Metz informed me they never tested the unit with the 645Z but that's a silly excuse.

My suggestion would be to AVOID using the secondary flash on your Z.

Pentax 645D vs 645Z

645D with it's slow response/write speed and shot-to-shot time, 50k shutter life (presumably) nowadays is a one-trick-pony almost, a camera that should be used at base iso. As such, on a tripod, for long exposures or landscapes is really viable especially bought used in a good condition as a second body. But considering contenders such as the Nikon D810 which are new at that price, who knows how smart of a decision is to keep or buy a D nowadays.

Pentax 645D vs 645Z

This topic is most likely beaten to death, and I apologize for starting it as an introductory sort of thread on these forums. To keep it short, recently I've bought the Pentax 645z (kit with the 55mm) new as well as used:

- 35mm 3.5 (mint, one dust spec behind the rear element) - 600e
- 45-85mm 4.5 (mint, minor discoloration on the hood mount) - 600e
- 85-160mm (mint) - 650e
- 200mm - 250e
- 90mm macro - 1500e

Got the Metz 64 A-F1 digital for pentax and the remote.

As a nikon user, I'm already used to the sony sensor technology (own 800/810 bodies) so the 645z is the only rational upgrade and only currently available technology that's a step up from the best DSLRs. Everything said about the Z is true, it's a hand-holdable marvel of a camera which is hard to fault really. But I'll reserve judgment and form an opinion after using for at least 6 months. What I'd like to point out is the actual difference between the Z and the D.

Namely, before splurging the funds for the Z, I've actually bought a mint, 2400 actuation D model for 2500E with a minor scuff on the LCD. I've used it for 2 days and took available light pictures, most of which on a tripod and almost all on base ISO (200 I believe, I didn't know if ISO 100 is base or one of the expanded modes that's why I kept it at the default 200. The upper limit was 1000 on the camera before enabling expansion).

What I've came to conclude, watching the pictures now from both cameras, is that at base ISO the picture from the D is better, organic like. I can't actually give a proper analogy but if anyone had a plasma TV and then switched to a good LCD one, if you're a perfectionist you'd most likely like the colors/tonality of the plasma panel. There's that magic which is hard to describe. The grain pattern, the contrast, it has something special.

Now, for everything else, shot-to-shot time, handheld use, high-iso use, I mean everything but base ISO, the Z is a night and day difference.

Unfortunately, the D is now 1400km away from where I live and the store doesn't have an online order form, but I kinda regret returning the used D. I would probably buy it to use it alongside the Z and only for rare, special tripod occasions.

A random snap with the camera sitting on a table aimed at a random chair..
