That looks like an incredible piece of glass. Great images. Thanks for sharing.
That "F4" would put many fast primes to shame :)

Just curious to know what is achieved with this? The shot with smallest aperture will have the deepest DoF and the other shots would be a subset of this one, or is there something I'm missing?

:( the post made sad.
My father had a couple of cameras and he was there at all family functions taking photos. When someone in the family (my uncles, aunts) sees me doing the same, they say I inherited this from him.
He passed away in 2010. Happy father's day dad :(

Well, here is the drop scene of the whole confusion. I went to the seller, still not sure about which one to keep, and came to know that he has a Nikon 50mm 1.2 for sale :) Took a few test shots and brought that home

Thanks again manntax for taking the time. I too liked the colors of takumar better.
I have a Canon 100mm f/2. That wide open too seems to be bit soft and picks up on sharpness when stopped down. I believe this is how the fast primes behave.

I am going to take another set of photos with tripod and mirror lockup. Yes, the photos posted earlier were handheld. With the razor thin DOF, a minor shake can destroy the focus. Hope that's the case there.

Hi manntax,
Thanks again for the insightful comments. One last post for comparison. I am actually quite enjoying this comparison now. Loads of learning.

Thanks a lot guys for the detailed replies. Well, here are a few test images from the Tak. Please share your views.
There is the glow around the white markings on the lens. IMG_1927 by Haroon Mughal, on Flickr
Dreamy, it sure is wide open. Sharp, not sure. IMG_1994 by Haroon Mughal, on Flickr IMG_1995 by Haroon Mughal, on Flickr
Stop it down to 2.8 and sharpness improves significantly. IMG_1996 by Haroon Mughal, on Flickr

Wow... that's a great photo. Thanks manntax. I have quite a few pentax manuals and the focus/aperture rings on this one are as smooth as others. Of course it's an old lens and the copy in question does show signs of use and age. However, glass is pretty clean.
May be it's that "glow" that I'm calling CA? Will share some sample photos tomorrow.

Hi,
Need some help on the subject topic. Which one of the two is preferable? I have read mixed reviews of Jupiter. However, the one I tested is pretty sharp wide open. The takumar, having great reviews, however, suffers from strong CA till f4.
Due to the budget constraints, I can get only one. Appreciate the help :)

Haroon

Now that's a fairly common problem with people having more than one hobbies, as mentioned in earlier threads.
The best possible scenario is having two or more hobbies that compliment each other. I grow exotic plants (cacti and succulents) and am never short of subjects for photos. Actually a plant in really good shape or bloom demands being photographed. Similarly, the plants need to be taken care of well to be photograph-able :)
That keeps both the hobbies going for me.

Thanks all. Such a friendly forum it is. Danny09, yes there are lots of opportunities of street photography and a lot of historical places with great architecture to capture. I have lots of subjects on my roof top as I grow cacti and other plants as a hobby :)
I am now seriously thinking about getting a pentax body to utilize the lenses to maximum.
Thanks again everyone.

@camerasup, Both 1.7 and 1.8 are great. Each one has a different character.
@kjphilippona, thanks a lot :)
@kerrowdown, well that's what I have been trying to do too. I will try to get a used pentax body to get a hang of it. And if it's addictive enough, I may totally switch :)

Hi,
Just joined this very informative forum after being a silent reader for a long time. I am a telecom engineer by profession and a hobbyist photographer. I don't own a Pentax SLR yet, however I have collected quite a large number of vintage Pentax lenses over the last few months. I use these with a Canon 600D and now seldom use the auto lenses. Absolutely love the 50mm line. I have 1.4, 1.7 and 1.8 different variants.
Looking forward to learn a lot from you people around.
