Pentax K-70 Giveaway waiting for spring

So, I am currently taking photos with my old phone, a Xiaomi Mi A1, because my Pentak K-50 broke (some known solenoid problem that i don't know if I'll be able to fix).

I had chosen a DSLR Pentax camera because I already had an analogic Pentax camera and a few great K-mount lenses that I could use with no adapter at all. K-50 was a quite good choice for a not so high price.

But now it's broken, I don't know yet if it can be fixed and how much it'd cost me, and I have all these old lenses (and other that I bought later) waiting to be used again attached to a great Pentax camera. It would be really great to get this Christmas present.

With the K-70 I'd be able to get back to the good old days of photography and post again on my page https://500px.com/p/helenaazeredo.

For me, the K-70 would bring back especially the ability of making photos with a shallow depth of field, that I certainly can't make with a phone, creating photos with those beautiful blurred backgrounds and amazing bokeh effect, that I miss so much.

Thus the title of this photo I'm posting "waiting for spring", as I am crossing this "no camera winter", waiting for a new spring, when I'll be able to enjoy photographing again.

Thank you for reading,

Helena

Well, I managed to convert it to a tiny 58 KB photo, and upload it! Sorry for the small picture! :(

I went to the old part of the city Viseu, here in Portugal last Saturday. I thought it had a busy aspect with all those cranes rebuilding houses, so I shot this one and called it "under construction".

This judgement exercise has two different aspects. One is photography itself, its technical details wich make all the difference to the final result, and scomatic listed some wise details of which we should be aware while shooting. The other one is about the feelings the image is supposed to cause in the observer.

Since feelings are subjective and each person has different memories that bring up those feelings when looking at images, I will take some assumptions of what can be considered as peaceful attributes that can be found in a landscape:

nature; water; horizon/unending; silent; inwardness; spiritual; timeless; weightless; stationary; symmetry; order; pure; limpid; white; quiet; simple; soft

So, having these in mind, and given that my own memories and feelings, wich are different from yours, are what makes me feel more or less peaceful by observing each of these great photos, with all the subjectivity of my judgement, I would say:

tessfully
Although your second photo is showing a very peaceful scene, we are made to feel that peace by the activity of someone, and not by the landscape itself (but the scenario is itself a peaceful landscape with no doubt - that white flat ground of a frozen lake, with the forest in the background would be perfect for this chalenge).
So, I'll stcik with the first one - I almost felt the same peace by reading your story. But by looking at your photo, my eyes stop at those white branches of the trees in the first plane. I would rather have increased DOF so my eyes would get to the horizon to feel the freedom of being above all that beauty. But it sure has that timeless aspect that makes us stay and take a deep breath.

ars
I think you've chosen the best place to feel peace. You can see water, you are in a high place with a large view and that is a place that favors inwardness and spirituality. And that sky is so beautiful!

Tamia
I feel a bit off-balance by looking at your photo, that doesn't feel like peaceful to me, although I thing that's a great shot as it is almost dragging us down into the fall. I think it's rather dramatic with those hard rocks showing and that tumultuous water. But I can understand that it is peaceful for you, mainly because all that rush in nature can make us feel less stressed about our everyday rush.

Bill2849
This is a truly relaxing place! I can imagine myself walking slowly by the river and sitting on the bridge to hear the birds singing! I don't know if it is really like that or if it is my eyes, but it seems the bridge is not completely horizontal.

mtux
Here we have a peaceful place indeed, but conceived and designed by man, wich is something I know that can be done almost as well as God's creations (I don't know if I told you before, but I am an architect, so I know what I'm talking about! ;) ). I only wish that the lake was full of water, I'm sure it was intended to be. We would get a mirror surface and would have much more impact. It's a great peaceful place and a great photography - you've chosen a point of view that allow us to understand the space and leaves more to explore...

sealonsf
I love mountains! That's where I go to feel some peace! There, the silence is greater, the air is lighter and you have large views! Your photo is great, guiding our eyes on this road. But to feel the peace here I needed to go to that spot ahead there, where I imagine that I would see a perfect peaceful landscape... Can you imagine that too?

noelcmn
I think you got the point! Your photo meets almost every concepts I wrote above. It's a great peaceful landscape photography!

scomatic
This is the photography I find most beautiful of all - the last, but not the least! It's a great composition, great colours, I love that deep grey sky and all the tonalities it brings to everything else. It doesn't make me feel that it is a peaceful place right now, as the storm is coming and everyone left. If I were there I would be anxious about it too! But we are talking about the photography and not the place it represents, and beauty, harmony, cleanliness of an image, as yours is, is something that I am very sensitive about and I value as fundamental aspects to feel peace. And I can really feel peace sitting right here, just by looking at this photo!

So, I choose to win, the photo that leaves me peacefully looking at it, and that's scomatic's:

2nd, as the photography that better meets the theme, noelcm's.

3rd, as the places I would go to find peace, ars's and Bill's.

And I can't wait for next week's challenge! What will it be the subject? :D

Hi, people! Great shots... it won't be easy for me! :p
I have an extra meeting this evening, so I won't be able to judge until tomorrow night. If anyone wants can still enter this challenge!
Meanwhile, here's my photography:

Hi!
My son won? Great, thank's Tess! I really think he is the most beautiful boy in the world (along with my other two boys) and he should win all the competitions even if he fails the basket many times. As you can see I am a mother and I am not neutral about that! ;)
And congrats to all the other participants, all winners too, with great body and face expressions!

As for judging next week... that will be a difficult thing to do! I was already shooting landscapes for this week's challenge to learn this technique, beacause I have less experience with that, and, for what I tried yet, it's not easy!
But by exercising observation and criticism I think I will learn even more! So, come on, everyone! Start shooting, and participate a lot, make it hard for me to judge! :D

My guests are gone, and I went out to shoot some moving thing... I know it's a bit late. I don't mind if this week's judge doesn't accept my entrance, I just wanted to try something. So, I got this butterfly flying away...
I played a bit with white balance, turning the sky into grey, and I think I got a nice effect with colours. Not much of an action photo, but that's what I could do!

Hello everyone!
First of all, thanks everyone for standing up for Tess's and mine reflections, specially Tamia for the enlightening text about this P52 challenge, congrats to all the people in the podium (and out of it too ;) ) and, Scomatic, apology accepted.
I put my photo in my facebook mural asking everyone to tell me if they think the photo was taken from outside or from inside, and the truth is that most people was looking at it as if it was a view from the inside, through the window, to a beautiful sunset.
So, I went again to the top of that wall to shoot the same window with my mobile phone, so everyone could see that window in the external wall of the house, with the reflections of the sunset light (the light wasn't the same anymore, it never is), so everyone could see it the way I do, and I am attaching it here too, so all of you can as well.
It's a good photography lesson, after all. We must not assume that other people will guess the things we deliberately left out of the frame.
I guess I won't have time to shoot some action today to enter this week's challenge, but I wanted you all to know that it is not because of this incident, it's because I have guests here at home...

Doesn't meet the theme? It's the same as the example you gave "Inception in New York" - the sunset light reflected in a window! Have you at least read what I wrote about it? Did you even notice that, as the glasses aren't completely parallel, the reflected image is repeated in one of those? Can't you see there's a curtain and it's valency behind the window? Could I shoot this from the inside? It had to be a big room!
This is just a challenge, not a contest, I enter it for fun and to learn something, and I always do. As I said before, it is quite addictive. Every week I think I won't be able to shoot anything that meets the theme, but as the week passes I start thinking of something and then develop the ideia, and finnaly I find myself standing up on the top of some wall to get what I've been idealizing.
I wasn't expecting some podium place, and surely not a first place - as I say in the post of my entrance, I didn't get what I wanted and I don't think this photography is worth of anything, at least with respect to technique. But I expected a fair judgement. Maybe you shoud take into account that it takes more time to judge than to shoot one photography and if you couldn't take time to participate this week, you probably would have no time to judge properly.
I'm not angry, just a bit disappointed. I'll stay around, anyway... I guess I'll regain the enthusiasm...

Hello everyone, I'm back! I've been busy and lost that "food challenge", but I saw the photos and got hungry too!
This week I've been waiting for some special light. I know that sometimes this window is a good place to be watching the sunset light, and I thought that for this week's challenge I could try to look at it from the outside to capture those colours reflecting on it.
I had some difficulties.... I wanted to have a greater depht of field so the window and the tree could be in focus, but there wasn't enough light and so I had to increase aperture and ISO. That's also because at the best place to compose this photo it was impossible to use a tripod or some kind of support for the camera - I was standing up in the top of a walll (these challenges are getting dangerous!!)
So, the window got out of focus and the photo is grainy, but I hope you like it. If not the photo, at least that sunset light... it was really beautiful!

I don't know if this is something usual around the world, but here it is quite common to put some "firework sticks" (I don't know the name of it in English nor in Portuguese - at home we call it "estrelinhas" wich means "little stars") along with the candles on the birthday cake.
As there was only one left, I had to do it right on the first time I'd try, so I did as it's said in the video. With the lights on, I focused and set the manual mode of the camera thinking that the shutter speed had to be high, and because of that, the aperture had to be the widest to capture something out of those "stars". Then, I turned off the lights and lightened this stick. I only had time to shoot 2 or 3 times to realize that I wasn't getting enough light, so I quickly slowed down the shutter speed, and this is what I got just before it finished to burn.
Maybe I'll buy some more of these to experiment different settings. :p

Thank you all for your words about my judgement and specially to Dieterson for commenting my entry too. It's great to understand how other people interpret, and how they feel about our photography!
To noelcm and scomatic many many thanks for your explanations and video. I think I can experiment Noel's recip at home... i'll let you know. Won't be so easy to try scomatic's tactic, beacuse that's highly professional for me, with too much equipment... but it was good to learn how it is done!
And for the category, I was trying to change it but I can't! May be you could correct it for me, scomatic! (I thought all of these weekly photo challenges were in the same category, as they are all under this path: PentaxForums.com → Photo Sharing and Galleries → Weekly Photo Challenges →NAME OF THE PROJECT)

And now, next week's challenge! :D

Weekly Challenge WINNERS - Project 52 52-7-08 - Ideas - Creative Power

So here are my comments to so much powerful creativity:

noelcmn - It's not that I don't want you as my enemy, wich I don't, but I really like your photo. How did you do that? Is the glass coloured? Or the lights? This is a mystery to me, with a beautiful result!

Tamia - It's worth to try, but I don't thik that guy will get rid of those caries. It's a bit late for him. But that shows that you really have a powerful imagination... who would think of such a thing to photograph? You made me laugh too... nice work!

patrick9 - Yes, go and get a WR lens, and get out into the rain with it (don't swim on that pool) ;).
I like that blue colour too, but I'm finding it hard to understand the motives and your choices when shooting this one. Where are you trying to take us? (probably it's just me that can't figure it out... sorry :o )

tessfully - I surely hope you are right. I miss springtime with it's sunny and warmy days. :) Your entry is really creative, and a different way of using photography: as a scenario to new compositions. And with sense of humour too.

Dieterson - That's quite a way to be creative. Changing the scale and the point of view has the power to make us look at things differently. It's a funny game to play with kids too: "imagine you were an ant, how would you see this, and that?" Good job! (You have to work on that terrain around the cabin for me to visit you (I can't get there by car) - but I'll give you some time: I'll wait for the summer, so I can swim in that lake!)

mtux - This is why sometimes photography would benefit from having sound included! What's the instrument she's playing? And I don't agree with you that you don't have much creativity. Anyone who can dream by listening to beautiful music is certainly already creating something. Sometimes we just don't know how to bring it out. Maybe listening to our own dreams is the first step. Nice shot!

jcdoss - You made me laugh twice, and both times by relating electricity with this "creative power" thing. As scomatic said, electricity wasn't the subject of this challenge, but it sure is used to portray power and also creativity (that's my photo - a tungsten lamp as a symbol of brilliant ideas). You can tell Johnny Socket not to worry about it, because "he's got the power" and creativity is what he is made of. :)

scomatic - Beautiful! As I said about Dieterson's photography, perspective and scale changes everything. But time changes it too. By freezing a moment that our eye can't capture and simultaneously by showing it at a different scale you can get both beauty and mystery. The light is great too. Sorry to ask you too, but how is it done?

Papa Lazarou - That's a different way to take a selfie. I just can't tell if you are winking ;) or not. But I like the effect of it. You are facing the camera but we got your profile (side view). It remembers me of cubism painting, because it is all about showing different sides of the same object to represent volume and time (movement). And that's creativity in all its power!

Bill2849 - I'm not the best person to say if it meets the qualifications or not, beacuse I'm quite new around here. (scomatic says newbies are only for the first time, but I'm still not comfortable to answer that - how did they put me judging this thing anyway???)
For me this photo is great, because I'm not new only in these forums, I'm also a new photographer and post-processing is something I also want to learn about, so I think we could discuss it somewhere (probably it is being discussed in some threads, but I haven't found them yet). So, all these words just to say that I think post processing can be a great tool to be creative, I only wish I knew how to.
And for the photography itself, I can't see that silk effect you mentioned. To me, it looks like it has a wall behind it, I can see the texture of the painting and even the craks in it. And the funny thing is that the branch got that texture too, so it looks somehow transparent as if it all became water and ice... I like it!

And now the most difficult part... choosing a winner. As I review all the entries, I think it is quite well shown what creative power can be in photography: unexpected looks to the world around us that can push up the imagination of the observer and make him dream with us... were there any doubts? Thank you all from what I learned from you :D

3rd place
noelcm (are we still friends? ;) )

2nd place
scomatic - that one is hard to beat

1st place
Dieterson - for making us dream and, that way, showing all of us what creative power is about

So, for Patrick's photo, I apologize for this late comment, but I've been busy and couldn't make it earlier, so here it is now. As I enjoyed your sense of humour, I'll try to follow:

This is a real love story, not just a photo capturing a moment. It has also a past, and certainly a future.
If you take a second look you will see that she has been really in love with this guy, and for a long time! But he is a hunter who thinks only about shooting and capturing everything around him, with no time for girls. She's been thinking how to get his attention, and she decided to embellish herself up and pass by, pretending not to be interested. She didn't look straight at him to make him feel that he would have to go after her, just as if he would have to hunt her too. And it had just the effect she was expecting! He focused her and his heart beated harder, as in those fractions of second when some bird lands in a branch near by and he suddenly has to compose and decide the best exposure to capture it. And he thought "What's happening to me? She is so beautiful, how haven't I noticed her before? Look at that lens! I bet she captures great things with that. We must hunt together, we would be a perfect team!" And then he did everything wrong. If he was shooting a bird he would have fly away. He made a quick movement to focus better, he made noise (oh, this is not my silent focusing lens!), and he coughed. But it didn't matter, because she wasn't a bird, and she didn't want to fly away.
She even thought his embarrassement was so cute! :o

Well, you can imagine the rest.

This is a really inspiring photo, as you can see so, if Patrick wasn't judging this week, he should have won the challenge!

And now I'll have to judge next week's challenge, isn't it? That's the hard part, I hope I can do that... I am a newbie to photography and my English isn't so good, specially with those technical terms... but i can say what I like, and I think that will do it, is that true?
