The GRII produces some really nice images and the handling is pretty good for a compact but nothing like a K10D.

The handling on the K10D is about perfect, added to which it doesn't have a thousand menu options you never use like a modern dslr.

It's as close as you get to the ease of use of film with rendering that is close to film in quality.

There's so little to get in the way of the creative process of taking a great shot.

It's just a great camera to use, but on this thread you all already know that. 😀

It's not the card as it reads and writes fine in my other DSLR body.

My k10d is showing card locked when I turn it on which I understand is normally dirty contacts n the card slot.

Does anybody have any tips for cleaning the contacts?

Can I safely squirt a bit of contact cleaner in there?

It's the sharpness that impresses me.

It's a 50 year old 200mm lens at max aperture and it can do that.

For Christianrock re lenses for the k10d, for a cheap modern prime the DA35 plastic fantastic is superb and the 50mm is good too.

For manual focus, an M50 costs peanuts and is a good first manual focus lens. With focus confirmation using old manual focus lenses is relatively easy and rewarding on the k10.

A bit more 'out there' but many of us use screw mount takumar lenses. These lenses were the best in the world in their day and whilst modern coatings are much better, in terms of sharpness, on the k10d sensor which only uses the centre of the lens, they will give much better results than a modern zoom lens. The cheap mounts you can pick up on eBay work just fine. On the k10d my favourite lenses are the takumar 55mm/f1.8 for portraiture (closest to 85mm) and the 24mm/f3.5 (35mm equivalent.). The 50mm/f4 macro gets a lot of use too.

The 55 is dirt cheap and very easy to get hold of on eBay. The 50 or 100 mm macros are both good and reasonably common. The 24mm is rarer but is my default choice as a walkabout lens.

If you want to really see how good your k10d is, try some of those older lenses. The results will make you smile!

Why ever not? The whole point of photography is the images you produce not the technology you used to produce the image.

If you are on this thread its presumably because you appreciate what the k10d can do. You will know therefore that at low ISOs, the last Pentax DSLR with a CCD sensor can still hold its head high... or perhaps you're looking at your Dad's and wondering where the video button is and how you find HDR mode?

True. The K1 is light years ahead in many ways, and will capture shots that the K10d can't. For me, whose interests are landscape, street and portrait photography, in most situations, the k10d is still a great performer and the absence of extra features makes it quicker and more pleasant to use than my A7 or the K1.

I bought the A7 because I wanted to be able to use my vintage glass in the way it was designed to be used, and that has been a good learning process in itself. However, my K10d is still my tool of choice in most situations. It produces great images without the need for the added complexity. As with most tools, simpler is often as good if not better...

I managed to handle a k1 for the first time yesterday.

So many buttons and functions I would rarely use. My A7 is similarly complicated but the settings are buried in mile deep menus.

For most of my photography my k10d has everything I usually need and nothing I don't need in a simple intuitive reliable package. It allows me to think about the image I want rather than which button I need to press.

Yes it has massive shortcomings at higher isos, but in every other respect, it's still my favourite camera for photography - i.e. taking photos rather than talking about features!

Long live the k10d.

I'm lucky enough to have the 85mm Tak. Here's an example of why I treasure it. Opened right up it is a bit soft but retains its feel.

Here's a little contribution to the k10d ccd sensor love!

I tried to take two similar images on my k10d with a Tak 55mm and my A7 with the Tak 85m. The photos were taken at F4 within a couple of minutes of each other in similar lighting conditions. Both cameras were set to ISO100.

K10D/55m/F4

Sony A7 / Tak 85mm / F4

To my eyes the K10d colours are richer but also more natural.

Hi there.

It looks like my problem is down to a problem with the SD card slot.

To fix it, I've bought a low mileage GX10 so I can enjoy many more years with this great camera.

Hi there.

I've had the same problem with my k10d. It looks like it is a connection problem with the SD card slot.

The problem came and went so I ended up buying another low mileage k10d. It is still a great camera. No bells and whistles but everything you really need in a brilliant easy to use package.

Hi there.

I'm having a problem with my beloved k10d.

After a handful of photos it says card locked and refuses to save any more photos.

I've reformated two cards and I'm getting the same problem. Any ideas?

Both cards are 16gb.

Nice one! The 50mm/F4 Macro is one of my favourite Taks on APSC.

Can I ask a question of other Tak users using later bodies than my K10d please. Is the metering improved with M42 glass on the later bodies. The metering certainly isn't the K10d's strong point with manual lenses.

I love that black and white of the buildings.

That Tak24 is my favourite lens on a crop body.

This image was taken with the 24mm Tak that lives on my k10d. The lens will probably be soft around the edges on a FF body but on the K10d its great. Small, fast enough and great IQ.

k10d + Tak 85mm. My 85mm is one of the oldest Taks I've seen and it has the aperture ring at the front, and minimal coatings, but it can certainly produce some magic on my k10d. Its good on later bodies, but that CCD sensor is magical.

Here are a couple more photos with various lenses - all using a k10d.

Tak 50/4 Macro - One of my favourite Takumars. Perfect for handheld macro shots on a crop sensor body.

Tak 24/35 - My everyday 'go to' lens.

Tak 85/1.8 - Great IQ with this lens. 'Artistically' soft at F1.8 but very sharp by F4. Fantastic colours. If you are put off by the price these things fetch, then IMHO, they are worth it. Mine is a cosmetically ropey copy but look what it can do.

Wanted: Advice for Takumar user upgrading
Posted By jamess

Like many others I love my Takumars and I have no intention of replacing them with something more modern. I love the simplicity of my k10d too, but I've decided that at long last it is time to upgrade my DSLR body.

All my shooting is done in aperture priority or manual and I have no interest in video or sports shooting.

I read the A7/K3 comparison with a variety of manual focus lenses with interest. Both cameras are showing edge softness for hardened corner pixel peepers with the takumars, but not enough for me to worry about. However the CA issues that I have seen elsewhere from the K3 are of more concern.

I'm thinking do I wait for the FF or pick up a K3 or a k5iiS? If the latest sensors are starting to finally show up the image limitations of the best vintage glass, I'd rather upgrade to the best body for my lenses.

I'd be interested in the experiences of other Takumar users with any of the above bodies or the A7. What is the best DSLR body for a Takumar addict?
