K20D Noise?

well, i the truth is in between. let's remember that we are looking at a 100% crop out of 12-14 megapixels. resized to fit a computer screen it makes no difference, maybe the nikon shot looks more neutral, and the pentax shot more colorfull and slightly sharper/noisier.

secondly, those are 100% shots at iso3200. if you would try to remove the noise in the pentax shot in order to print larger-that-average you yould most likely end up with a velour as well.

i shoot raw as well, so the nikon shot would give me less headache. but this is just me.

as always, i think it comes down to taste. i much prefere the natural, neutral "go anywhere" look of the D300 in this example. no drama, ISO3200, slightly soft, some luminance. the K20 shows texture, and a fare share of chroma. the shot looks busy, i don;t like this look, and i would loose some of that texture anyway (unintentionally) in my attempt to ease the noise.

the K20D's behaviour in the high ISO's is well known. but they had to allow ISO 3200-6400 like the competition...

pentax's approach to removing noise is sublime, while lacking allmost entirely. they prefer heavy noise while keeping more detail. this kinda defeats the purpose, unless what you're actually looking for are noisy images.

sony's approach to noise is quite the oposite, kill the infidel :))

pentax has proven over time that they cant do in-camera processing, just can't.

oversharpened jpegs, saturated, bad color casts, ocasional artefacts. so they decided they will just leave it up to the user's skill in postprocessing to try and make something of the image. (see the example above, with a 3 step algorithm to noise reduction :eek:)

i had a pentax, quite noisy. i also had a K10D for a basketball game and used ISO1600. it had alot of detail left mixed together with alot of noise. after resize and attempts to reduce the noisy look of the image, all i ended up with was some structured mush that someone was quoting above.

in the same light i used similarly priced nikon with ISO1600 and after the PP i had a better result overall.

Hello sholtzma, since you posted your question in the dSLR area, i am going to provide a dSLR-ish answer: the Pentax K-m.

If you ignore the K1**D series, this is the only current Pentax offering that almost qualifies in terms of size, weight and price. Couple that with this nice compact prime lens, and you got yourself a nice package:

well, the first picture has many flaws, none of them due to the equipment used.

- the scenery is badly lit, contains some snow, and is not particularily interesting.

- it is in landscape mode. i have seen for myself that in auto modes, the cameras use some freaky settings.

- a camera and a lens are not enough. you have to use a polariser lens, and some gradual density filters. and a tripod

so, start using Av mode, dial f8-f16 for landscape shooting, iso 100, use a tripod, compensate the exposure by trial and error, and mount a polariser, or a cokin gradual grey+polariser.

always shoot raw and adjust WB, sharpness, saturation, contrast in PP.

hello,

i must admit i was quite surprised by the title of the thread, i thought it must besome kind of a joke.

after the first few posts, and viewing the pics it really did seem to be one. you can't compare tho cameras by showing two very different pictures.

any kind of camera would have taken near-perfect shots in those lighting conditions. after examining the 1D shot and seeing the amount of noise in the shaddows, at ISO100, i couldn't belive it. i have been taking pictures with various amateur-enthusiat-semi/pro cameras, and i have never seen nasty shaddows like those, at ISO100.
that is what you would probably get with most cameras at iso100, if you were to shoot 1.5 stops under, and then correct the exposure/sharpening in raw.

i remember shooting raw ISO800 in nasty yellow light, 1 stop under, with a 6 mpix camera, and getting that kind of noise in the shaddows.

a professional photographer should be an artist, and a pixel peeper, in order to deliver near-flawless shots.

there is a rule amongst serious studio photographers, which states that you have to properly expose the deepest shaddows, in order to get most of the detail present there, even if you slightly overexpose the highlights, these can be recovered without much trouble, while still keeping detail. the deep shaddows can't.

secondly, you have to know your gear. knowing that the 1D ruins the deep shaddows, as a good-intended photographer, you should consciously light yor subject, in order to insure proper detail and contrast ratios.

thirdly, when i was only a beginner i was given a great semi-pro camera to shoot with, and develop the shots. they turned out quite crappy, even though the camera was great.

now, with the knowledge accumulated, i would take better shots with a 6-7 year-old DSLR.

fourthly, you are comparing different generations of signal processors, sensors, and so forth.

lasltly, you can't compare heavily compressed jpegs, because you would loose most of the sensor's capabilities through compression. 16 bits ? i thought the K20 only has a 14 bit AD converter. maybe i'm wrong..

these are some of my thoughts, that came to mind while reading some posts here, things that should be considered before making statements like "K20 has better IQ, or 1D can't handle the shaddows".

i didn't read that specific thread you mean. but there is one about black silicon here too.
the cameras are fine, little noisier with some more detail, little slow by now (burst i mean), a little dated if you compare them to the latest offerings from the competition, the AF is a good, though not how i wanted it to be.
i apreciate the construction on the K10, K200, K20, more than what was needed.

it's not my job to stop a nonsense that somebody else started. if you are going to compare a pentax to a similar camera from other system you should try to find something a pentax is better at, like construction/price paid, details in the high iso's/price paid. don't go in the AF arena, a pentax is not intended to compete with canon and nikon in that area.
and if you do,a nd compare pentax to canikon, compare the best of pentax with the best of the others because otherwise it would be quite dificult finding an oponent in the other side that wouldnt be too amateurish or too "serious".

otherwise, the thread is bound to generate nothing other than flames. this is why i started posting here. pentax offers an interesting and cheaper alternative to the other two makers maybe even better, but only on a certain domain and usage area, that is why i don't approve of users marching in here singing "Pentax, Pentax über alles"

well, again, you are missing one important fact. while you are sitting confortable on your sofa, reading pentax brochures from your reps, dreaming at some K30 with black silicone sensor, or AF system that will obliterate the D3 in a shootout, i actually use my camera for shooting . you probably don't even own one, or if you do, you keep it in the top drawer in you trophee room. yeap, that's right, i've shot sessions with the K10, i know what it can do. in good light any digital SLR can autofocus quite quickly.
provided you have the time and patience, almost any model can AF in the dark, if you can find a contrasty spot. and that is exactly what the K10 is doing, it gets the focus right, i was telling you earlier that i think the pentax focus is consistent. that is the same for the *istDL i've owned. i used the K10 and *ist with good lenses, the 16-45 for example. not quite the 16-50 star, got afraid of the whole lemon thing and didn't order one.

the problem is, and the reason i swiched, and some other friends too, the AF takes too much time to achieve focus in badly lit scenes, artificial light, in respect to other cameras, and in some ocasions even starts to hunt. i know this because i missed shots... my D80 is simply faster. not alot, just enough to get the shot. i know that because i used them in the same environment, similar lenses, moving people, low light, alot of coming and going around. that is the same experience for my other friend, with the K200D.

i am an experienced user, i don;t have to call other people names in order to make a point, i've posted photos taken, i use a decent language, i i have the practical know-how in this particular domain, hence i dont meet the conditions to be a troll. you on the other hand have nothing of what i've just stated, so you need to take a deep breath and a long hard look in the mirror.

if one pentax user tests a pentax camera against the opposition, which one of the cameras is more likely to win ? there are alot of those threads on DPR, thank goodness. are you positive you got all of the options right for the AF system ? might just be a bad sample, there are people stating it hunts with some option deactivated, and are others who say it does not. every manufacturer has bugs like there and if the problem is real, i suppose this can be fixed with a firmware most likely. they said the same about the AF on the new 1DIII, about the 5D2, apparently the outer sensors give OOF. and then some guys tested the D3 against the abovementioned 1DIII and found a much better focus in burst mode for the 1DIII. and so on. these are minor events and represent spikes in a performance chart, measurement noise.

the reason why i still post here is probably, the fact that i am immature enough to think that a pentaxian could actually accept the fact that his/hers camera underperforms compared to another. i also amused myself seeing you compare the K20 to the 1D from canon in some other thread, i can't wait to see what's next. i think it mai actually be a worldwide marketing conspiration against pentax and i'm realising now i am just a part of it.....

well, to be technically exact, you also could strap a mast and some sails to the roof of your car and drive your way around without even needing to stop at any petrol station.

the significance of wedding photography and the results achievable changed pretty much with the introduction of Photoshop, autofocus, wireless lighting and such.
i thought it was clear that i attached those 4-5 pics of that wedding to make a point on sharpness and "crappy pictures taken with a 3 year old CCD". if you will be kind enough to watch the whole youtube video pasted earlier (i also thought it would be quite clear why i provided only a youtube link), you will notice some action shots, some tricky lighting schemes, some limited amounts of ambient light, some limited amounts of ambient light with the interdiction to use flash, and some other things that are well over the possibilities of your average bridge camera or whatever. a wedding isn't just 20 formal shots in the park, you surely realised that in your 400 paid weddings.

now that i think about it you are right, us professional photographers (i can barely call myself professional..) get too much hung up on our equipment, i think i will email some of these guys: 1 2 3 and others i know and ask them why do they need all of those 1DMK III, D2X, 5D, D3's. why don't they just pick up some old F2 or a MX with a 50 f/2 lens, a bunch of TriX's and a Sunpack 383 and get the job done ? they are artists right, they could shoot a wedding with pretty much anything.

also, i think it is a little strange you should ask me and other canikonians to leave the discution since the thread title sais "Pentax vs. Canon vs. Nikon AF"

was this supposed to be another one of those feel-good threads where someone would just point out in the end that you don't actually really need AF at all? you say you are not commited to any brand, but your post dissagrees with you.

thank you, i never made a compilation of my best pentax shots, now i realise it's a shame. the DL served me well, there is a shot here with the K10 i think, but the requirements were low and when i started workind in low light the AF and fast moving subjects it was the show stopper, even with the spotbeam assist on the 360. here are some more pentax shots, last post.

sigma 10-20, SMC 18-55, takumar 50 4 macro, revue 80-210 2.8-4, K10 with tamron 90 2.8 macro.

hello, thanks for your considerations, the pic with too much sky is deliberately cropped like that. i do alot of postproccesing from raw and sometimes i get bored of the same old framing in the group shots. also, i am inclined to overexpose the shots, go for a lighter look. no, pic no.1 is not shot with an 85, i discovered that i have no real application for that focal length since i allready own an 50 1.4. it's shot with a 105 mm.

thank you for the intervention radu, and thanks for the help you gave me in the spring. i went in the shop and tested the K20, it didn't met my expectations.
i lost some money while selling my pentax stuff, kept the backpack though, and i still admire my work on the DL, i have tones of this stuff.

i was curious about some specs on a K30D, that is the reason for my presence here.

well, i was talking about lenses on the market, or owned by people i kow, it was a general consideration regarding legendary and accesible primes. i previously stated that i consider nikon superior in the sub tele zone because of the 14-24, 24-70 and 85 1.4, wich seem to be better than the canon counterparts (if there are any, the 14-24 is starting to become a sort of a habit amongst canon users too :)), and the 85 1.4 is inexistent), and completely lack in current pentax offerings. now i remember that the 70-200 VR seems to be a tad better than the canon counterpart, or ar the same level to say the least, so you can stay in touch in the tele zone, somewhat. sure, you also have a 300 2.8, 400 2.8, 600 f/4, but it seems that they still have to prove themselves somewhat.

i shoot a D80 because i did not have the money for a D3, i had to buy good lenses and flash. i am not the greatest wedding photographer, i am only shooting for less than a year in this area, i have plenty of time to perfect my aesthetics. and yes, you can get sued if a wedding goes wrong, with of without the D3.

that seagull pic is so blurry and the color is not great at all, it's not even worth posting. also, tallent has nothing to do with the camera you shoot, as Henry Cartier-Bresson once said:

but there are times and applications that require the max you can get. i see alot of mixed opinions, both from noobies and photographers. i have no interest or real gain in replying to this topic, i have proven myself without calling anyone names. grow up.

K20D is the top offering from Pentax, not even matching the D300. nuff said about pentax keeping up. i've seen your pics, you could have taken them with a pinhole for christ sake. i'm talking "grab the moment or get the shot or you get sued by the customers" kind of photography here.

a BW panoramma is not going to prove anything about the sensor, and a pannoramma isn't going to prove anything about the camera's AF system. i congratulate you for using you camera however, it;s nice to have a talk with another fellow photographer. you are right, you can make art with just about anything, it all depends on what kind of art you are planning on shooting.

my friend, we are not even in the same class in terms of photographic knowledge and experience, so ill only say this to you:

as a photographer, my goal is to sell useable prints, not 3 year old technology, or 2 days old tehcnology for that matter. my clients seem to enjoy them quite alot, so those old CCD's still have some cards up their sleeves. or, if i don;t sell the prints, i use those pics for my own enjoyment, and they do the trick every single time. the price you pay for those IS lenses it's the price you pay for top notch quality of construction, of the image, and maximum image stabilisation. there is no such thing as a free meal :o and i did shot in the light rain and snow with the D80. can you shoot in the rain, with the 18-55 attached ? or the 50 1.5 or..

yes, they are the pics of a happy couple. the ones that i selected, and the ones i could upload, once selected, are quite average, i sorta selected them on the run. i don't even claim that the D80 is something unseen or unheard of, it is just a camera that does all the things i require from it.

as i said, i don't consider the D80 superior to the K20, or the K10 for that matter, i just think that for it is a very viable alternative, with a safe AF system, and it does what it supposed to do. and, if i need a good lens i can get it, IS or no IS, f/1.4 or f/3.5-6.7, 50 or 3500 dollars. and if i need a better body, and so on.

there are alot of things unsaid about the pics i just attached, in that youtube film you might have noticed multiple flash sources. easy with nikon, i raised the internal blitz, set the 2 SB's on slave, TTL, and fired away, with settings changeable in seconds. it;s all there, and alot more, that is unsaid. an experienced user takes alot of these factors in calculation before making a decision.

you are right, here are some pics i took, resized as i saw fit at that moment. please excuse the rather pronounced noise at full size, i thrashed them in Photoshop, i am not the most experienced o users. however, the primary destination for the files was printing in 10x15 cm, or 13x18, for the most of them that is, or, being viewed on a 1280x1024 monitor.

it seems that the forum turns a 800 kilo jpeg into a 80 kilo jpeg :confused:.

well, i'm quite happy with my purchase thank you, and have been for quite some time. the only reason i picked up the D80 instead of a D200 or even a D300 was, predictably, the glass that i could buy with the leftover cash. i invite you to view just a fraction of my work with the D80, i'm just starting to really catch on:
some wedding shots with D80

i want to make it clear that i would not and have not recommended the D80 over the K20D, as i previously stated, they aren't even in the same market zone. my argument was that tha AF in the K20D might not be a better choice instead of the "cheaper" AF in the D80, especially in low-light.

and then came the thing with pentax having the best glass, which is simply not true, considering the offerings from the competition.

i still have frinds shooting pentax, it;s not like i would be the only one in the bunch. however, i stoped recommending entry level Pentax to folks after i kinda lost a friend who was really unhappy with a K200 and F(A) 50 1.4 that i might have pushed him into (while being a happy nikon user myself) reccomended (low light hunting and noise levels).

i just had to buy some stuff for professional use and i picked a nikon that met my minimum demands, but with some really decent glass, and i only begin to feel the advantages of a mature system.

the reason why i started posting in the first place was the not-very realistic considerations made by (possibly unexperienced) pentax users, when comparing various pentax products with the competition.

sorry about the DPR quotes, i had to sustain my claims in some kind of way, without wasting too much of my time.

honestly speaking, would you really prefere the K20 instead of the D300 ?? i don;t really buy that, but i guess it better suits your needs. what about the D700 then, would you trade that in for a K20D ? not likely this one, not if you are truly into photography. sorry , as ever, anyone disputing Olympus or Pentax versus CaNikon is just waisting time.

i wasn't really trying to save souls, but rather share some knowledge. the end result - quite simply - is always the same.

for joele: i was talking about legendary lenses, not ones you cand buy off the shelf right now. i worked with a guy owning a 20 1,4 and it simply is a gem, and a nearby store features a 50 1.2 lens wich is, all things said, a very good lens.

they might not work on the D40-D90 range, but a 3000 $ lens is not the first choice for someone buying a 700 $ body ;)

hi nostatic,

i used to shoot both film and digital pentax, i also used the K20, i wanted to upgrade to it but i lost my interest after testing it, i even tried to shoot sport with the K10.

1 good lens and some other slowish AF or manual, albeit very sharp lenses arent going to make zeiss (sony) the number one choice. especially considering the fact that they arent much better than the canikon offerings, prices and the sensors available !!. secondly, nikon cameras (especially semi-pro and advanced zone, in the pro zone the differences are minute) are well known for the user-friendly design and menus, if anything, please check a small phrase DPR used in the D80's review:

..In-use performance also feels as though it's a step above its price class..[] There's also ergonomic performance, the camera is smaller than the D70/D70s but not at the expense of usability, the hand grip is a good size and shape (and considerably more comfortable than the EOS 400D) and all controls are within reach. Other small details such as button size and placement are simply just right.

and a bit from the D200:

So with the negative out of the way I can now say that I really enjoyed the D200. It's one of those cameras which you look forward to picking up, I really got on with its design and ergonomics, it's small enough not to break your back yet sturdy enough to feel absolutely purposeful, solid and reliable. It fills the photographer with an air of confidence that each time they need it the camera is going to perform. It also has an air of luxury, quality and thoughtful design which other cameras sometimes miss, manufacturers mustn't forget that many professional photographers have to 'live' with their camera day in day out, thinking hard about how it should feel and operate can really make a big difference. Nikon know about good design and it shows, the D200 is a great camera to get along with.

the confidence in my statements derives from all those days in the field with all of those cameras and lenses, photo meetings with friends from various systems and, not least, various internet reviews (you can''t test them all), and, in my defense, i have to say that this is the only "brand" forum i am affiliated to.

olympus also claim the greatest glass on the market (see the telecentric marketing thingy), sony claims the same, with the zeiss division, minolta probably the same. the fact of the matter is that nikon now has the best wide-to-normal-to-medium thelephoto setup (14-24, 24-70, 85 1.4) while canon has the upper telephoto nicely covered. pentax has some nifty primes like the 31, 77 (a friend tested a horrible copy, but this is another subject) but they can barely stand up to the competition (you got the holy trinity from canon 35 1.4, 50 1,2, 85 1.2, hope i'm not making a mistake, and then you have some of the nikkor glass like the 20 1.4, 35 1.4, 50 1.2, 135 2, 180 2.8, 200 2 ) when it comes to actual shooting terms.

the D80 is a very nice tool, and nikon is acknowledged as the best in terms of ergonomics (in the amateur-anvanced-semipro at least) and menus even by canon users. i think crappy pictures have to do more with the guy/gal behind the camera more than anything else.

hate to crash your party but the film era is over. i see you're recommending the K20D over D80 or xsi's when they arent quite in the same league.

i am a former pentax user, now i own a D80 with some good glass. true, the old pentax took it's sweet time while focusing, the D80 gives me satisfaction even in the nastiest illumination schemes. the 40 D should be even better. pentax is not famous for AF speed, but rather for AF consistency, precision of focus, at the expense of overall speed. i guess the photographer sometimes dictates the behaviour of the camera, so the guy with the D80 was probably a rookie or just plain misfortunate. in that picture, at 18 mm and f/3.5 the DOF is so large (78 feet according to dofmaster, 6 feet in front and 72 behind for a subject at 14 feet) that you don't even need AF, in fact, the camera probably could have focused whereever, you would have still gotten the shot. manual focus would have been a good ideea. i miss the colours that the pentax used to generate, switching was an unpleasant moment but i had no chouice.

i too defected to nikon. i had some cash and wanted to upgrade, i tested a friend's K10, and my boss's D80 and chose the D80.
i bought a tamron 17-50 and a nikkor 105 and i couldn't be more pleased. i chose the D80 because of the overall noise at high ISO, controls layout and "feel" of the thing, AF speed and lenses available.
i'm talking about a 50 1.8 that pentax doesn't offer new, a 105 macro with supersonic motor, sealing and VR, which i use basically for everything (portrait, sports, macro...it's blazing fast), a 85 1.8, a 17-55 2.8 nikkor that truly is professional, unlike the 16-50, with the recalls and all, 70-200 2.8 nikkor, pentax does not have an alternative, and FF possibilities for upgrade.

pentax is good at an amateur-advanced amateur level, i had a great time with pentax and i still consider buying a DL with takumar 50 /4 macro, but when you earn money out of your shots, you need nothing but the best.

hello, i regularly shoot lots of pictures and i can tell you that your camera is limited only by it's shutter andurance, for the *istD the value for that would be around 50.000 shots, for a brand new camera. also, i managed to allmost destroy a *istDL's shutter release button by pressing hard on it (it gave me the ideea that it would focus faster :lol:)

so this would be the only thing concerning you in this respect. however, a shutter replacement operation is generally considered inexpensive (100-200 $ ??).

regarding your camera's usb connection, i wonder, since a 2GB SD card (or CF for *istD) costs around and under 30 $, and a jpeg max quality takes 2-3 Mb, why should you bother ??

hi, thanks for posting your pictures, see, the last picture ilustrates exactly what i'm trying to avoid, it has that "deer in front of the headlights" look, the background is too dark and the flash light is too obvious, this is the reason why i use the high ISO's to compensate, like you see bellow.

1. ISO 800 is essential in a wedding if you want to properly expose the background at the restaurant or in an orthodox church while keeping the aperture in reasonable limits (i.e. keeping the DOF reasonable so that the other participants can recognise themselves in the pictures, when the situation requres it), ISO1600 would be a real treat. wedding photographers know what i'm talking about

2. i have used various lens designed by pentax or third party, but not for long (16-45, revue 70-210 2.8-4 etc. ), i don't currently own any lens or camera for that matter, and i would not use the K20 with a cheap lens.

finally, please check out the exif information for this picture and please tell me how i could properly expose the background while lowering the iso speed.

i am a former pentaxian mate, i've taken alot of great shots with my MZ-5n with SMC F 28-80/3.5-4.5, SMC M 50/2, SMC Takumar 50/4 macro, *istDL with DA 18-55, FAJ 75-300, AF360FGZ.

i'm doing alot of studying lately, i want to upgrade, i've only used a D80 and D300 from nikon and a 20D (briefly) from canon, at the moment i have no camera. i read alot of revies, saw tons of sample shots, the 40D just seems so much better when it comes to high ISO. i shot some high iso samples myself with a 20D and it blew me away, almost inexistent noise levels at 800 and good noise level at 1600. i'm sorry, i don't know the author of the topic, but what he's saying is unnacurate (5 fps, no sealing ) and the noise levels comparison seems just wrong.

i've taken into consideration an upgrade to the K20 but the feedback i got (including on this forum) dissapointed me. it seems that only one wedding photographer on this forum shoots a K20, and the high ISO shots i've seen from him (800-1600, i didn't need to see more) were plain bad.

sorry if i offended someone, i thought the comparisson was unfair and i took a stand bringing my own arguments.
