Freezing the flight of little birds with the SMC-K 200 f2,5

I have ambiguous feelings about bird feeders, and do not have one at my house. But on a birding trip last year I stayed at accommodation north of Cairns and they had birdfeeders everywhere. Came back around 4:30 pm, after a long day of birding to find a frenzy of activity around the feeder outside our room. Still had the K3 with 150-450 mounted in my hands. Quite gloomy and overcast. Sat down at the table outside my room door, rested both elbows on the table, focused on the feeder. Dropped my default shutter speed (for using the 150-450mm hand-held) from 1/2000 down to 1/320, closed the aperture down to F9 (I was quite close). I think (not positive) I shot in single-frame mode. Took around 30 shots of the birds around the freezer and on on nearby branches. About 4-7 shots turned out much better than I had hoped.

Hi Jack,

"some decent snaps"!....These pictures are top notch ! You made nice work with your K200. (and I am so jealous that you saw David Bowie through your lens !)

Cheers

Yes I think results were good for the first try.....50% shots with no bird or out of focus area...The good thing is that AV mode with K lens allows auto light metering..but wide open. The only drawback is some purple fringing with the K200...I will try next with the DA*300 and K1 at f4 (I will get the same D.O.F.) and share results in this thread.

Having some time to spend, and seeing birds going from a tree branch to land at a finding station in the garden, I decided to try catching these landings.

I needed to be close enough to the bird, but the field of view has to be wide enough to catch the entire bird evolution to be sure it will be in th frame. (Bird trajectory is difficult to predict)

Some view tests told me that my K200 f2,5 (300mm on APS-C) would be ok for the shooting distance (10 feets).
The 2,5 aperture permits to shoot with minimal exposure time / not so high ISO. The manual focusing is perfect to pre-focus the target area.

The equipment: K30 + K200 f2,5 mounted on tripod with wired remote trigger. Pictures are taken through a double bend house window.

The way of doing:
K30 in AV mode, so the pictures are taken wide open with tis K lens (f2,5) - ISO 1600 -> exposure times were all between 1/5000 and 1/6000.
Focusing by advance on the feeding station area....waiting while watching directly the scene (not in the viewfinder)....depress remote control at the moment the bird leaves the branch to land at the station. (little birds are very fast and spend few tenths of second to go from the branch to the station).

I didn't use the continus shooting of the K30 thinking it would waste dozens of pictures and make less fun to do.:):)

I wasn't looking for support or approval. Having a nice purse/strap makes me happy. I posted this because others might have been interested. It is cool if you are not. It is cool if no one else is interested either.

The buckles are fine.

I was inspired by my custom purse and strap for the THE VIRIDIAN and I had a short poll about what fabric would look good to do the same for my K-3 III.

Here is how that turned out. The silver is not quite the same but I do like this pattern and am overall happy with the results.

One thing to watch out for is that finding accommodation in Edinburgh during August can be very difficult and expensive. The Edinburgh Festival and Fringe Festival are on then creating very high demand. You will probably need to book now to stand any chance of getting somewhere in Edinburgh or you may need to look at basing yourselves in another town or city ( Stirling, Dundee, Perth or Glasgow ) and travelling in for the event.

I grew up on Loch Lomondside so I am biased in prefering the "Wild West" to the "Far East" that is Edinburgh and the east coast. I would recommend reading Raw Spirit by Iain Banks as part of your research.

Hi ya Jack,
Good to 'see' you again...its been quite awhile.

but what are you doing in Manitoba?....what is the Sylvia going to do in your absence?

Entertaining series mate, thanks for sharing. (I'm surprised you didn't dress the roadkill and set up a roadside bbq..??):)

And for anyone who doesn't know Jack Simpson...this is one very talented man and a great photo journalist...with a very sharp wit.

Cheers
Grant
