I have had a whole bunch of these around my house lately. So I started taking the K50 and the 55-300 with me on my walks with my dog. I spotted this guy just sitting up in a tree. It was a dull overcast grey day. So it meant high ISO to get a decent shutter speed and aperture. The 55-300 does not do well wide open and shake reduction does nothing for you if the bird is constantly moving. Luckily they cleaned up well in post. The K50 is such a great camera for the price. My K3 and 50-500 are just heavy to take on these walks. Even with the 60-250 the K3 is too heavy. The K50 and 55-300 are just the right size and weight.

I was impressed with how this came out at ISO1600 on the K50.
Comments are always welcomed and appreciated. :)

Here is a cropped shot I took of one of the Terns which just arrived not too long ago due to the warmer weather. It was flying above a lake that is near a marshy area.
I took it with my Pentax K-3II/Sigma 150-500 DG OS.

So sad about Prince leaving us much too soon, too early. A very talented and gifted artist and entertainer. R.I.P., my young friend and God Bless.

I'd only gotten my da*300 a few days earlier, so when I went to the park in the middle of winter, I was really just expecting to be the guy who brought WAY too much lens to the party.
I'd just started walking around Ferrill Lake when I saw a VERY large bird land in a tree, maybe 50 yards away. I noticed that it was white on the top and bottom... JUST as it touched down and immediately took a few shots. Over the next few minutes I just kept getting closer and closer; it was in a fairly dense tree so there were a lot of angles that just did not work. I finally came up close behind it and there was an opening. I fired off a few shots, eventually drawing its attention. I got a few other really good shots, but the one with it looking directly at me was my favorite.
Not a bad way to break in a new lens.:D

On dull days, we're gifted with deep colours. The temptation is often to cash in on this, by raising the overall apparent illumination (and by extension, saturation) by raising the midtones. If you want to remain true to the fact it was a dull day, try not raising the midtones.
Then when you raise up some of the highlights, as I did with the lamp bulbs in this photo, you get a remarkable contrast between those high key areas and the overall drab scene. Use Curves, and make sure you keep an interesting range of tones within each of the two contrasting areas, by carefully placing two moderately steep slopes in that curve. |

Have a noisy screw drive autofocus that scares the birds away? If you have a camera with quick shift here's what to do. Get close by focusing with quick shift, then hit the autofocus and nail the shot. This technique really got me the shots instead of the flying away blur. Ruby Crowned Kinglet by Tom Ramsey, on Flickr
