PixelShift Images and Lightroom

Ok, the Pentax software (in camera, PDCU) can very well correct for the movement in Superresolution images by droping the superresolution in moving areas, whereas Lightroom not. Allright, it's good to know.

But I think the real question here is how to use the PixelShift sensibly, so that you not only inflate the file size, but also gain from it.
If you take a picture, where 70% of the picture is moving, e.g. a river, you'll gain some extra pixels for trees in corners and stones that are not washed by water. It probably depends on what you expect from your picture and if you are going to make a large print and say: "Hey, look at this stone and its resolution!"
Or if your only object in focus is moving, and will probably be corrected in favor of a single bayer frame, you just get a pixel-precise bokeh, which will likely be very difficult to tell from that non-PixelShifted.

However, I think that the original purpose, why they'd implemented it, is when you are up for landscape shooting with PixelShift... in windy conditions. As the slightest breeze can cause you artifacts and pain, it is very helpful, if this is already taken care of by the software.
Or I could imagine scenarios, where everything but what you are interested in is moving, like in object tracking (probably bad example, as you are not going to track precisely enough) or when your background is moving - like pictures taken inside a moving vehicle, boat...

But this makes me raise a question, whether it is possible to get good (or at least some) results with handheld PixelShift with K-1 and its 5-axis stabilisation? I was able to get sharp handheld images with K-3 II and a 16mm lens even at shutter speeds of 0,3-0,5 s. The keeper rate was something like 15%, but still...

No experience with Lightroom, but in Adobe Camera Raw 6.1 it seems that it doesn't recognise the Pixel Shift function. PS images processed in Camera Raw were no different from those that were acquired without PS. I had to process them in PDCU in order to get the desired detail boost. However, the colors were completely fine in my case (shooting K-3 II).

I just found a perfect instance of this phenomenon in my bathroom. :)

It's probably no question what is now PDCU (no corrections, natural profile, all settings "middle") and what Adobe (all defaults, WB slightly adjusted to match PDCU) processing...

I know this very much depends on the actual monitor, calibration and stuff, but it is the upper left corner, that takes the gold for documenting the color. On the other hand the left looks like it was already washed 50 times, whereas the right almost new. So perhaps, this vivid red effect might be desirable at times.

That said, I wish there was an easy way from left to right and vice versa. I never (completely) matched the look of an image processed in the other software. :/

(I tried to match the WB using the tiles. There is still a boundary visible, but you know.... it's pretty close.)

Hi Azergoth,

you of course made a good point with the WB. As changing WB really makes a difference in color appreciation, that was one of the first things I tried to mess around. But see for yourself... In the range 3000 - 7000K no blue in CameraRaw, but a prominent blue peak in all of PDCU processed images (I am aware of the fine color WB tune, but it also made no difference).

Well, I thought that there were many people around reporting issues with reds in pentax... At least I noticed myself, then did some googling and found a number of forum links like this at no time - https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/115-pentax-k-5/244792-whats-up-color-red.html
Apparently, sometimes when you take a pic of a prominently red object, in-camera and PDCU processing can lead to a red punch where most detail is lost. I had some of this myself. If I find some examples, I'll post later. I never had this problem, however, while using CameraRaw. On the other hand, certain images come out much more lively out of PDCU in a way I struggle to achieve elsewhere. I was wondering if it was color space management, or something else?

Hi,

I was always wondering how images PP'ed either in Adobe CameraRaw or PDCU could look so different in terms of colors (especially reds), no matter what settings you use. Here I am showing the most bizzare case I have so far experienced. I am shooting to DNG, sRGB with my K-3 II. In PP I am using default parameters in both apps with all corrections turned off.

First image is the original DNG developped in camera.

The second is a crop of CameraRaw 6.1 developped image

The third is the very same image processed in PDCU 5.4.2

As you can clearly see in the PDCU image, the originally exclusively orange LED turns red-white, as blue signal sneaks in the highlights (check the histogram).

Now, it gets even weirder. You know, that there are 2 ways of making jpg from your DNG in PDCU, the "save as" and the "save as with image processing" option. I don't really see the difference as obviously the raw sensor data has to be processed somehow in order to scale down to from 14 bits to 8 bits per channel. But OK, the SA does it "it's own way" whatever that is (camera setting?, PDCU default?) , whereas SAWIP takes into account the parameters you have changed in the Laboratory mode. Now, the funny thing is that the LED stays white-red on the images processed via Laboratory even though I turned off all corrections and set everything to default, but the simple "save as" gives much better (and more orange) color of the LED. The last three images are only blue channel from jpgs developped in: 1 - PDCU Laboratory (all default), 2 - PDCU save as, 3 - CameraRaw (all default).

And now the questions ;)
Where the bloody hell did the blue come from? :D
How and why is there a difference between "save as" and "laboratory".

All in all it makes me feel that the very well known "Pentax Red Overdrive" issue is not a problem of the camera sensor or exposure as some say, but rather of imperfect image processing. :hmm:
Can somebody comment on the difference in handling the raw file in PDCU and Adobe applications? Perhaps, it's been solved in another thread already?
I'd like to keep PDCU as PP option, especially for pixel-shift images as they are misread or not recognized by CameraRaw (at least in 6.1). But the color abuse in PDCU prevent me from using it more.

Hi PentaxForums!

it's been almost a year from my K-50 purchase and you helped me a lot all along the way of acquiring my gear. This great source of knowledge facilitated making decisions and assessing what might be the optimal way for me. Now, I believe it is time to start paying my share, contribute to this forum and perhaps be helpful to others in the same way this forum was helpful to me. As a starter, here is a little story of how I got to purchase a Pentax dslr.

Ok, so about a year ago I got back from a vacation and was going through the pics I had taken. I have to say I never owned a camera myself and was always borrowing one from friends and family, and the compact accompanying me to Paris was the same case. Going through the pictures was this time somehow more painful than usual - blurry... shaky, grainy, uncrispy, flat (but at least some) photos. Over the years I got finally fed up with the compact cameras and the all-automatic all-in-one photographic devices, where all the responsibility is taken by the camera software and the only creative decision user is left to make is the compostition of the picture. I suddenly started longing for a good camera which would enable me to take good pics even in difficult situations and let me be more involved in the process of acquiring pictures. At this very point I felt ready to became an owner of DSLR!

But now which one? Black one, silver, thick or slim, shiny or classic? Which brand do I even start with? And sir... what exactly do you mean by full-frame? As you can see, I was almost complete newb. Most of people I knew were shooting with either Ca or Ni. Therefore I started browsing entry-level dslr made by those companies. And then I saw some review, in which Pentax k-5 was compared to some Nikon body. It really caught my attention, because the review was very positive about the k-5. I had hardly heard about Pentax brand before and I had very vague idea that they had something to do with cameras, so I digged it up. The fact that reviews were almost every time praising Pentax, the solid bodies were sporting weather sealing and image stabilization a lot cheaper than the overly hyped CaNi brands, which are looking at you on every corner, worked together for me that Pentax quickly became my blue-eyed boy.

One of my friends who was much more experienced in photography told me, that I should't get carried away byt specs and numbers too much, and should try how the camera would feel in my hands. So I tried several cheaper CaNi bodies that were around. They all felt somehow plastic-ky and toy-y. When I went to a shop and put my fingers on K-50, it felt very different and... it was a perfect match! I don't need to tell you, how the things proceeded, given that it was my first dslr, but you can imagine that the first week I was having it, I didn't remove my finger from the shutter button...

I will try to post some more serious stuff in future, like my personal appreciation of the gear I am so far equipped with and so on...

So long and stay focused!
