Christmas lights. 2.5s exposure, 70-300 zoom. I held the zoom ring stationary and rotated the camera for a somewhat spiraling effect.

... and judge you I shall.

This was a tough subject to shoot.
noelcmn: Nicely composed. Could use a little more focus, and the busyness of the background are a little distracting. I'm curious if you caused the splash or it was something natural?
djb47: Nice job freezing the splash. It's composed to show the extent of the spread of the little droplets, so maybe a darker background would help highlight them?
CedrusMacro: I love the shape of the splashes and you have some neat reflections going on. I wish the splash had happened a little further back so the out-of-focus portion was in the background, not foreground.
ramseybuckeye: That's fun - I like how you can see the spray across the image. A little blurry, and I wish I could see a little more of what looks like a pretty clear reflection.

I'm going to select CedrusMacro's image as the best "splash" image ... and since we extended this contest by a week it's already time for you to judge the "refraction" images. Good job everyone!

Project 52 Project 52-10-12: Refraction

Ok, so this isn't my most inspired photo. It's been a busy week over here with the holiday and multiple other unexpected time commitments. I was fully committed to sitting down tonight and relaxing with some music instead of setting up a photo. But when I grabbed a CD I saw refractions - a clear sign of what I was destined to do. And since it's still 12/2 in SEVERAL time zones across the world, here I am.

Bonus points for figuring out what I'm listening to.

Great choice. I think I finally convinced myself this really is a photo, not some strange painting technique. I easily spent as much time looking at this image as all the rest combined.

Love the adobe and cloud textures play off each other here in b/w. Might just be my taste, but I'd at least look at a little crop+rotation so that the opening is more square to the frame.

K-1 with DFA100/2.8, 1/2000s f/5.6 ISO3200

This is me squirting water into a half full (half empty?) glass vase. I placed the brightest thing I own, a halogen work lamp, right next to it but still could have used more light to push all three dials to more advantageous levels. Composition was a bit of a crapshoot but I got plenty of interesting shapes. Several of the shots (this one included) had interesting bokeh balls from microbubbles in front of the main stack - doing it again I might look for a way to grab a little more of this through extra aggravation or particulates.

Ahh, I see. I thought you were using "bead" as a synonym for "drop," but apparently water beads are things. Learn something new every day.

I tried a few test shots and found I need a lot more light than I expected. I'll have to get creative on this one.

I suppose I get my calendar-based perspective from my fascination with astronomy (too many hobbies). I'll concede that for the purposes of photography winter = cold.

My wife feels that winter starts the first time it snows, or gets really cold, or worst-case the weekend after Thanksgiving. One might argue that as of today we still have an entire month of autumn, but that person probably isn't married.

For those of us just getting familiar with the terminology, how would you define the difference? I see contrast as the difference between light/dark, but I thought "key" was more of a lighting technique (i.e. whether the subject is fully illuminated or in shadow). I could easily be wrong, but I would have described your two images as equally "low-key" with the second one having less contrast.

My trusty Guggenheim mug (I even cleaned it just for you).

K-1, D-FA 100/2.8. I stuck the mug in a trash can custom light box to limit the light to a single window, and handheld a flashlight to grab the reflection on the right.

Nicely done. I have a similar black fuzzbag that presents herself as a big dark hole in most photos.

Update: my K-50 is back in my hands after Ricoh agreed to fix the aperture block failure out of warranty
As expected it works perfectly, I only paid for shipping one way, and they even have the thing a good cleaning.

I wouldn't read too much into it. I took it as a non-answer intended to let me know they were aware and could fix it, and I didn't ask further.

K-50 Aperture Fix Feedback

My camera was 2.5 years old when it failed. I reached out to Ricoh via their web contact form (I didn't see a better way) and told them that my camera had the aperture block failure, that I was very happy with the camera otherwise, and asked if they had a recall planned or any repair assistance available since this appeared to be a common defect. In an emailed response they told me the first step would need to be an inspection at Precision Camera (as I'm in the USA), after which it is a case-by-case basis. I sent the camera in, and Precision inspected it and called me to ask how I would like to pay the ~$170 for the repair. I told them I was discussing the repair payment with Ricoh, and they put the repair on hold. I gave Ricoh my repair tag number, at which point they asked for a copy of my original receipt and "escalated my issue to upper management." After a week or so I got a phone call from the guy who handles their email, letting me know that management had agreed to repair the camera as if it were under warranty. The repair lasted another week, and the camera is in the mail on its way here now.

I was told the issue is caused by "a newly-designed part that is installed," which is no help for you DIYers out there, but at least you know Ricoh is aware of the problem and is showing at a degree of willingness to make it right.
