It’s only vertical if you don’t turn it sideways like almost every other half frame camera that’s existed other than the Yashica Samurai models. If you’re already shooting film for the aesthetics why not go all the way in and as a bonus get 72 shots on a roll. If image perfection is the goal then film is not the medium any more unless you go the other direction and shoot 4x5 or larger.

I have my original black Q and then a Q7 I bought later followed by a Q10 I picked up cheap. I actually use that one the most as I utilize it as a spot meter for my 4x5 film camera.

It happened to me as well but it was from rain getting in the eye sensor. It freaked me out because of the rain but I found the screen worked as you did with the play button. Wiping the sensor off Sorted it out and I calmed down and laughed it off.

First I don’t think there are any systems in the camera that would retain a charge for 24hours so I wouldn’t waste my time waiting that long between tests.
Does the mirror return to the down position when the camera is off? I ask because if Live view and video work and the mirror functions properly although not when it’s supposed to then perhaps it’s the live view switch itself. Try moving it several times and see if there is any change.

I have the original Q which is more of a display item and the Q7 which has become my fancy spot meter for when I shoot 4x5 film. I use the telephoto zoom to take light readings the only problem is that the apertures end around where the large format begins so it always involves some math. I also have the Pixel 6 pro which is a good phone but not as versatile as a Q7. I should qualify that the Pixel 6 pro is great at its prime optical settings. Any digital zoom and your in the artificial intelligence zone.

As I said I have never had a problem with water and any of my Pentax cameras my only mistake was not immediately realizing the sensor which transmits and receives an optical signal was being impacted by water on it.

I’ve had a series of Pentax cameras all water resistant. K10D,K7,K3 and now K3III and never had any issues despite the fact that I let them get rained on. This weekend though the K3III gave me a bit of a scare (It’s all good in the end). I was taking a picture that included a nice rainbow and then the rain really picked up. No problem camera and I were wet and I was still shooting but then I couldn’t see anything on the rear screen. I couldn’t get play to work or even get the info to come up. I walked back to my vehicle and when I got inside I tried again with no luck. I started to wipe the camera off a little and that’s when I realized it wasn't the screen at all it was that there was water on the eye sensor. The screen wouldn't come on because it detected something at the eyecup.

Thank you very much for sharing. I have not done the firmware update yet but will make note of this for when so do.

I guess you could take a reading without the filter and then recheck with the filter on. If your camera changes by about 1/2 stop then you don’t need to make any changes and can shoot at box speed. If there is no difference then you would need to make a slight compensation as we know the filter cuts the amount of light. My feeling is that they were being overly cautious on the box and the camera will likely need no adjustment.

I switched from Lightroom to ACDSee a couple years ago. I rarely need to go outside of it for any of my imagining needs. The latest version has some powerful image editing tools.

By default isn’t it reading the sensor in 1/16000 of a second? If it took longer it wouldn’t be a 1/16000 second exposure. So I guess the question is what happens when the exposure time is greater than that with the electronic shutter. What if you had something that moves at a uniform speed and then you changed the shutter speed to see if there is an increase in rolling shutter as you lowered the shutter speed.

Playing devils advocate here but for such a long post you spend a very short time actually describing the nature of the getting wet. You state that it did get wet but wasn’t submerged. That’s not the kind of statement I would make if my camera had just been rained on that sounds different. So what actually happened? Before I get all up in arms about Pentax I would like to know what I am getting mad about.

With the user modes I can assign settings to any of the 10 boxes but when I want to recall them to assign to a user mode on the dial I can only see the 5 that are already assigned to a dial. Essentially boxes 5-10 can hold settings but you can never access them. I’m using firmware 1.10
Edit- I just figured it out you have to select the dial position first then the box to move to it. I’m sure there is a better implementation of user mode assignments they could have come up with.

I completely agree with your initial assessment. Once I received mine I just started using it with the main thing I needed to reprogram myself with was the playback button otherwise you can go straight into using it from a K3. It’s an amazing camera what else can I say.

The DA12-24 is the widest I have and that would give something like a 55-110mm equivalent on the Q7 so not so enticing for what a I would use a tilt shift for.

As a K3III owner I have little reason to read any of these reviews. This seams to be a bit of a common feeling based on other comments. It’s not my job to sell camera gear but in my opinion the K3III is a camera that stands on its own as a fantastic photography tool. Comparing it to a mirrorless camera is pointless it is unabashedly something different.
I expect that Ricoh will keep this model in the lineup while multiple iterations of other manufacturers cameras will come and go and I am fine with that.

Good grief I’m not afraid of updating my camera but if Pentax is churning out firmware updates every two weeks I think I can wait until they fix something of import.
In my job we do firmware and microcode updates on network gear all the time. No one expects things to go wrong but they still do.

On the wish list note As they have implemented several bracketing modes I would like them to implement a smooth transition focus composite mode. A simple explanation would be aperture bracketing with image combining. The result is that the in focus area is not impacted but the out of focus areas are averaged giving a smoother background. You can do it manually but everything is there to do it automatically.

Personally I’m going to wait for a firmware update that I can notice. The risk of something happening when doing a firmware update is not 0 so I don’t want to be doing it more than I need to. I will need to put some thought into what I would tip me over the update edge but undefined general stability is not it.

I like a mystery as much as the next but I gave up. Thanks though but in the absence of official info from Pentax I am comfortable with type 2 being half strength.

Based on some images I took I now am pretty sure your right about that. It looks like Type 2 is about half way between no tracking and type 1
