On the Wine website I read somewhere that other Photoshops work as well (CS3 being the most problematic), but you have to give it some sweat. =p
Although it also said that CS2 can have problems. But as I said, I had none.

Note that Photoshop works on Linux (up to CS2 without problems — at least I haven't encountered any)... but if you need Lightroom, you have to use Windows. =/

I don't think the format itself should impact the printing too much. PNG itself is way better than JPEG quality wise, as it's compression is lossless (just like lossless TIFF compression).

I have XP on the same disk on a different primary partition. Can I steal dlls from it, and which ones would I steal?
Edit: yes I've tried the betas. I mean I don't totally dislike the application, I just like Raw Therapee and Rawstudio (and dcraw+gimp) a lot more... but I think I like Pentax's Utility 4 -even more-. So that's why I want it to work. =)

Pentax software has Pentax colours and tones. And Digikam is a bit slow in my opinion (compared to other open/free software). Also not fan of the interface. I'm settling between Raw Therapee and Rawstudio at the moment. Thinking of dcraw (pure, not uraw) aswell, in collaboration with GIMP... not sure yet.
Also, I've tried all wine version settings, doesn't seem to help. =/

Thank you! But I'm afraid it's no help. Apparently, noone has got the thing working yet. =/

Hello everyone,
I hope this has not been posted before (searched, but did not find an entry about it).
I really like this program, I also like ver. 3 of it, but this one is much nicer. It seems to work alright on Wine but then just shuts down for no apparent reason.
Has anyone managed to get it working properly on Linux?
Thanks!

I would also like to know why prints appear darker. I've taken JPEGs to a printing shop in the city twice so far, and they were always darker (noticable enough to be unpleasant).
I know the light / colour generation is different for an LCD screen and for paper, but shouldn't they calibrate it someway then?

Thanks!
2 shots made so far. Waiting for some suitable opportunity to take more. The camera seems to work okay so far. Meter has been dead for some time though, so I use my K20D to meter.

I guess I'll try! Now... what to use it on.. =P
Oh, it's black and white ASA 400 film, by the way. (no idea how mum could remember that)

Hello there!
So, I remembered my mum has a Yashica 12 (got it from her dad). I took it into my hands recently, and behold! A roll of film is inside! (Not a single shot fired)
Now, I know the roll has to be at least 10 years old, as no one touched the camera since then. Do you think it's still good, or should I go buy a new one?
Thanks for the replies! =)

P.S. I hope this is the right forum. It does say 'Darkroom' in the title, and I suppose a question about film suits this place?

The K7's picture clearly shows effects of noise removal. If you're shooting JPEG, you might want to check your settings (Custom Settings, there should be noise removal somewhere)

Yeah RawTherapee isn't perfect, but it's getting there, I think. I just found out now that I prefer 'RawStudio', for my needs I can accomplish things a lot faster. And I think it has much truer Pentax colours.
And yes all editing in RT is non-destructive. But I think it doesn't have a Print option.
The cropping warnings get turned off with triangles at the top of the image (they have an exclamation mark in them).
Hope that helped,

RawTherapee has specialised tools to preserve oversaturated colours. It also supports highlight preservation, which probably would help this case too. You might want to try.
Oh, it's free software too. (Available for Linux and Windows)

Hello everyone!
Until recently, I have been using RawTherapee, thinking how great its colours and demosaicing algorithms are.
But sadly, I've always considered the original Pentax software's colours (and image tones in general) to be far better. I have now discovered that the application called RawStudio features practically the same colours as the Pentax software. Although it doesn't feature all the stuff that RawTherapee does (and RT still wins hands-down in demosaicing quality), it's still worth a try. I really like it's workflow (the Tone Curve has a 'histogram' in the background, very helpful). Also, it's EXTREMELY fast!
So for anyone that's looking for a suitable application, it's definitely one to look at. Note though, it's only available for Linux, FreeBSD and Mac OS X systems.
(You can always apply advanced image modification in programs like The GIMP, anyway.)
Hope I've been helpful (and that my post isn't too confusingly-written),
— M. Nanthiel N.
P.s. I am in no way connected to the RawStudio project or anyone connected with the project. I'm doing this just to help, and because I'm glad I might have finally found a perfect raw developer for me. =)

Seems I'll be paying the least if I just buy this guy's lens... I'm gonna go check it out, he lives quite far away though. So I'm gonna arrange a 'testing' and see how the lens performs.
Any ideas what I must check? (got fungus, oil on aperture blades and scratches on my list)

You would do that for me? =o
But would it still have a normal cost after shipping and stuff? And it's well preserved too?
That would be so awesome! *has shiny eyes*

To explain the rarity, I've not seen a single Pentax manual lens (except the ones needing an adapter, and NOT Takumars, but some other stuff that's supposed to be real crap) until now, and I've checked at least once a week on Slovenian marketplaces and our "e-bay" called "Bolha" (which means 'flea') for several months.

Hey guys. one of these lenses finally found a place on the Slovenian marketplace.
The owner wants 50 € for it, and the condition is "normally used." After asking, I found out it has a few millimetres of fungus after the front element, and a few cosmetic scratches on the outside (none on the lenses, he says). According to him, image quality is not damaged because of these things (he said he tested it thoroughly and used the word 'pixelpeeping' as well).
These things are incredibly rare here, so I don't know what to do. But I really want a smallish, fast lens. Was thinking of the DA40, but I won't be able to afford that for some time, and it's slower. And I don't mind manual focus.
He's also selling a 135mm f/3.5, but I haven't asked anything about that one yet.
What do you think? =)

I've used pirated copies of PS until I switched to Linux. Even though versions 7 to CS 2 work here flawlessly, I just prefer the Gimp nowadays.

I don't know much about blue / violet / magenta saturation, but I've come across one flower here in Slovenia, which is quite common in some places, that has a very, very deep violet colour. Problem is, when I photograph it, that colour turns into a light or middle purple, and is not even close to the depth of the original. I don't know why this happens. But either way, shooting RAW definitely doesn't help. The only way to save that would be some heavy selective editing. =/

What kittykat46 said. You could also simply try covering the viewfinder with your hand, when your face isn't there.
