That a good thought -- to take a fast prime for night scenes. My only choices are: 21 mm 3.2 Limited (I like that lens but not really as fast as I might need?), The 31mm 1.8 Limited (love that lens, but of course it is heavier and bigger),
and the 43mm/1.9 LMT.
what do you think? I think I'd go for one of the smaller ones, and then I'd wish I had the 31 every time.

Thanks for the advice. I should have mentioned that I do have a teleconverter, and I have a GR III. I think that will work as second body?? I haven't used the teleconverter on the 55-300 yet. It's small enough to bring, so maybe it will be useful. I always take the GR III along. It's useful when I'm not carrying the K3 and want something better than my phone.

I know there have been a lot threads about lens choices for Alaska cruises, but I have 2 specific questions.
I am taking a cruise with the family (7 of us, including 3 grandkids) in July. I'm thinking of taking the 20-40 limited and the 55-300 PLM. I know that 300 is not long enough for wildlife. I also have an old Tokina 500mm mirror lens. I have the K3-III. My two questions are: should I take the mirror lens or just shoot at 300 and crop? The 500 mirror is light enough to take both, but which should I use when I need to length?
The second question: should I spring for the 16-50 PLM for the wider and longer range (and faster) vs the 20-40? Am I just looking for an excuse to buy that lens or it worthwhile over the 20-40 (which is of course isn't as heavy.) (Given the cost of the cruise, I can justify the expense of the lens as part of the cruise cost :) )
Our excursions include both some opportunities for close-ups of the kids e.g., sport fishing, and seaplane and other tours where a longer lens might be nice as well looking for wildlife from the ship.
thanks,
David

I'm leaving on April 7 for a trip to the Canary Islands and Morocco.
We are traveling with another couple and after spending about 4 days in Gran Canaria, we will join a National Trust cruise to other islands and Morocco until April 22.
On other trips, I've just taken a K3-III and an 18-135, sometimes adding a GR III when I'm not taking the main camera, say at dinner.
On this trip, instead of the 18-135, I'm thinking of using the 20-40 limited as my walk-around lens. I have the 55-300 PLM if it would be useful to have something longer. I'm just not sure how much reach I'll need and I want to keep the gear to a small set.
I can also take the 21 limited for when I want a smaller package or take the GRIII.
What do you think?
Also, any suggestions on what not to miss in Gran Canaria?
thanks,
David

Rondec: I looked at your photos on 500px and they are great examples of what you did with the sun in the frame. I think yours are great.

I had one of the early 50-135 SDM. It died at the worst possible shooting moment. I sent it back for repair. It has worked fine since then, but, frankly, I still don't trust it and am hoping for a 50-135 PLM replacement. If you don't want screw-drive, a replacement motor would be a good deal, but there's not counting on how long it will last. What kink of warranty comes with the new motor?
I've had good luck with my replacement. Is there any data on how quickly replacements fail if they do?

Des and others, I have a question about the 15mm. On travel I like to take a small setup to dinner to shoot the restaurant and food, and us at the dinner table. Will the 15 be too wide and produce too much distortion? Is f4 fast enough?
With the K3-III, I think it would be, but I don't have that experience yet.
thanks,
David

thanks,
like NZ_Ross, I also have the 20-40 Limited and am thinking about those as a 2-lens travel kit also. I had been just taking the 18-135, but for some things the extra reach seems enticing.
For just going to dinner in the evening, I wanted something small so I was taking a GR/GRIII, but I'm thinking for my next trip maybe just the K3-III and the 21 limited or the FA 43/1.9 that I have that I can use for that purpose.
So 2 zooms and prime?
what do you think?

Now that I'm traveling again, I recently upgraded my K3 to a K3-III, finally.
I'm wondering if it would beneficial to upgrade my old 55-300 to the newer PLM version.
I do shoot grandkids in sports and some birds, etc.
what do you think? Should I add it to my list for Santa? My wife is asking what she can get me.

thanks, that's helpful.
I thought the 201 might also be useful as a small fill-flash for travel as well if it could serve both purposes.

On a K-3 III, can the AF201 FG flash work as a master to a AF540FGZII slave?
I currently have the original K-3 and am ready to upgrade to the K-3 III, but I do use the flash on the K3 as a master, so wondering what configuration could replace that.
thanks

Using both slots, do you copy the same data to both cards for maximizing back-up? I've been using slot 1 for DNG and Slot t for JPEG. I hardly ever use the JPEG versions.

I'm going to keep it simple. I'll have a small backpack to carry snacks and water so having the 55-300 in the bag will be easy.
i'll try to get there early, but looking for steps is a really good idea, camera or not.
thanks,
David

I'm planning on attending the parade and rally celebrating the Washington Nationals World Series Win.
They are expecting "tens of thousands" of people. I don't know how close I'll be able to get.
I don't think I'll have much opportunity to change lens, so I'm wondering which lens I should depend on:
55-300, 50-135*, 18-135? I have others too.
I may also take my GR for wide angle.
thanks,
David

I also like the designs with with colors of the rainbow coming out of a prism.
As suggested by Jean Poitiers, it's best to better align the split light with the prism.
I'm not upset or confused by the use of a rainbow (and I'm American.) It's fine. Anyone who gets this confused with anything political should be pointed to an elementary physics text book.
By the way, my neighbor, Roy G. Biv, suggests using the rainbow colors: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet.

It does seem strange putting cheap filters on such an expensive lens, but including the lens with the body is certainly tempting.
I had an opportunity to try out this combination recently, and this lens makes for a very comfortable combination for hand-held situations.

Excellent advice from jatrax all around. Don't neglect the "multiple locations" part of the advice.
I knew an organization recently that made daily back-ups of their computer files to tape, but they put the back-up tapes on top of their servers.
There was a fire in the building that destroyed their servers, and, of course, their back-up tapes. It's hard to believe that folks would do that, but they did. This was just a couple of years ago. I would have thought people would know better.
