I played around with it some more... I might still do the user modes, but with the following setup it can be very fast to switch, I just need to build the muscle memory:
-Configure Smart Function for Drive mode with only the Single and Continuous-H modes as choices
-Assign this Smart Function to the special dial
-Press the AF mode button and set the "focus point modes" as desired for both AFS and AFC (for me this was AF and EXM)
Now I can switch between the drive modes trivially with the special dial, and switching AF modes is:
-Press AF mode button
-Move front e-dial
-Press AF mode button
The AF switch is three actions, but once I get used to it I'm sure it will be pretty fast. The key for this part is that it remembers the "focus point mode" for AFS and AFC separately so you only have to turn the one e-dial.

Thanks... Yeah, I guess I can do that. But when in P mode, if you adjust aperture it will change shutter to compensate (and vice versa), I guess that's the difference between P and TAv. But I can choose which one I like better for typical shooting. I guess I don't really need to choose... I could make U1/U2 modes for "P" with my AF and drive options, and then U3/U4 for TAv ...

Hey everyone. I find myself often shooting in one of two ways... a "normal" mode where I use AFS (select focus points with joystick) and single shot drive mode, and then for "action" where I want AFC (select with medium expansion) and continuous-high drive. Ideally I'd be able to switch between these "modes" with a single button or dial or whatever. Is this possible?
I know I can set up user modes on the mode dial (like U1 and U2) which have these settings, but the problem is that I'd like to be able to pick P, Av, TAv etc modes and then toggle my focus/drive in those as well. I can assign the special settings dial to control either the focus or drive settings, but not both at once...
Am I missing anything? The camera has a lot more controls than I am used to and I am trying to simplify things a bit for myself...

Good point, I don't usually shoot super fast, so perhaps this is not really important. Still seems weird to have the slots be different speeds.

Yeah. I guess I was thinking of saving RAW to both as a backup, but in the rare instance of card failure having a jpeg is probably ok...

If you use "save to both" mode to record the same data to both cards, does that negate any advantage of using a faster card in slot 1? Because it will still have to wait for the slower card to record the same thing?

Oh, I didn't realize that! I was sad about no GPS but this should do what I want!

Hmm... I guess it would be an upgrade from my k200d... But can CMOS really hold up to CCD? 🤪

Don't worry, I won't sell the K200D. Hopefully my kids will use it to learn someday!

Been waiting a while to upgrade my K200D. This might be the time...

That sounds pretty good... you will always be in AF-sel mode if you set that then. Hopefully they add this custom setting to all the bodies going forward.

Unfortunately I'm still using a k200d and don't have easy access to either a K3 or K1 for testing. On my camera, when I select AF-select in the menu system, the only thing that the D-pad buttons do is select the AF point. Which is nice. No confusion. My understanding with the K3 is that when you access certain button options (e.g. drive mode), then you might forget to put it back in AF-select. It is also my understanding that the K1 has this same behaviour by default, but by changing the function I posted about before, you can "improve" the behaviour, but I don't really understand how.
But I understand this is rather nitpicky!

Hmm, maybe that's not so bad then... I had thought it reset with power cycling (still notgreat, because you could forget to put it back into AF mode after using the other options). But then I don't understand how the K1 behaviour is different with the custom function enabled. Can anyone explain this? But maybe off topic.

I think the change in AF selection behaviour is a main reason I have not yet upgraded from k200d to k3ii... Seems weird to not be able to just have the d-pad dedicated to AF-select. I am hoping that at least the K1 option that lets you set that as the default becomes available in an upcoming aps-c body.

If it has a built-in flash? (kinda hoping no, or at least that it does not lose GPS)

I am in the same situation, looking for k200d upgrade... The k200d has a top LCD, so if you are used to using that (as I am) then you should note that the newer lower end bodies do not have one. Also, it seems to me that the ergonomics of the ks1/ks2 are not as good as the k200d, so if you are used to the feel, thumbrest etc, might be worth trying one of those cameras out first.
For me I was initially thinking k3ii, then was looking at K1, but then realized the canadian price after tax is $2800 and now thinking back towards APS-C... currently debating between used k5iis, k3ii, or waiting for the k3iii or whatever... I think I'd like the tilty screen of the K1, and it seems to me that the K1 has a custom setting that improves the behaviour of the AF-point selection mode (avoids having to press button each time to select point).

Agreed, might be an interesting alternative take on this. I like it though.

Yep... not trying to defend his review. And he risks his reputation if he posts poor reviews. Even some Canon shooters will recognize the flaws...
