Thank you for all the replies to this question, even though I didn't post it. I just purchased the DA L 55-300 lens and now I see from your responses that it was a good choice for me as an amateur. I also appreciate the tips about manual focus. It is loud, and yes - the birds would be gone in a flash with the auto focus on. Appreciate all your advice.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Really good advice. I will do what you said. I did do research on the camera itself and I believe I got the best camera for that price range. I will worry about upgrading to a better lens after I learn to use the camera and figure out what it is I want in another lens. Thanks again. I appreciate your feedback. I will not invest in the teleconverter. I will practice with the lenses I have and upgrade to the 300mm later. ---------- Post added 02-12-15 at 11:28 PM ----------
Thank you, I will do exactly what you recommend. Lots of good advice here! ---------- Post added 02-12-15 at 11:30 PM ----------
Thanks for the great advice on what to look for when I am ready to purchase another lens.

lol I just want to get better pictures of the birds. I don't expect to get those beautiful pictures of birds in flight. Sometimes they sit on my fence post and I would like to be able to zoom in closer and get a crisp clear picture.
And I was naive here, I thought I could get pictures of them up in trees so I could have a nicer background than the feeders. Now I know I need a more powerful i.e. expensive lens to do that! ---------- Post added 02-12-15 at 01:07 PM ----------
ThankYou! I am looking forward to it and I'm sure the camera class I'm planning to sign up for will help!

Thank you! I am taking a community ed class this spring. Get to know your SLR! I need that. Then I will be able to do more with the camera. By auto I mean auto on the wheel. I realized after I bought the camera I need the 300mm lens, but I will take my class and learn to use my camera then most likely invest in the better lens. The lenses that came with the camera are DA L. I couldn't figure out how to zoom. Then I realized the zoom is manual. Is this better or worse than auto zoom in your opinion?
I will also look into the TAV setting. Thanks again, Sammy

Hello, I am a new member and hoping you can help me out!
I just bought a Pentax K50 kit which includes a 50-200mm 2nd lens. Upgrading from very good Olympus point and shoot. The 200mm will not get up in trees to shoot birds, which you all already knew! I have 30 days to return. QVC also has a Canon kit which includes a 75-300mm 2nd lens. I like that Pentax is WR and also capability to use AA batteries. If I ever did buy a 300mm is there a need for the 200mm also? How about the 1.4x Pentax teleconverter added to 200mm? I just bought this expensive camera and it is not doing what I want, other than focusing way faster than my Olympus. Which I know is huge! A lot of time the birds at my feeders would fly away before point and shoot would focus. Pictures are comparable. DSLR cost 3x more.
I am using AUTO and when I crop picture loses sharpness.
Any advice?
New to DSLR. Had an Olympus OM-10 film camera in 80's and loved it.
Thanks, Sammy
