Resurrecting Pentax firmware hacking

Good luck with raw2tiff on recent firmwares. I was easily able to find everything in the very old firmwares (*ists), but in K10 I could only find fonts... In K30 I could find nothing... My guess is that everything is compressed. The graphics took up a large proportion of the old firmwares, and although the amount of storage has increased, so have the resolutions of the screens... The other possibilities are that they are encrypted, which I feel is unlikely, or use a less easily decoded image system...

K-30 Program Line Setting?
Posted By Moo

A little necro perhaps, but might as well use an existing topic rather than starting a new one for the same thing...

Unfortunately, there's no way to change between program lines on the K30 (even by changing dial settings). The question is, which line is it using? What I mean is, if I took a camera which did have the program line setting, what would it need to be set to to result in the same exposure calculation used by the K30?
My guess would be either "normal" or MTF in "regular" modes (P, Av, etc). In scene modes, or the automatically-selected "modes" in Auto, it may use other lines though, presumably preferring high shutter speed for moving objects and small aperture for macro...

Left-handed photographers?

I'm also left handed and left eye dominant, but do some things the right-handed way. It's the having to hold the (potentially heavy) camera in my "wrong" hand that causes problems for me. Also, as has already been described, the viewfinder being designed for right eyes.
While the mechanical arrangement of film cameras may dictate somewhat the layout of the controls and the camera in general, and changing that layout around would require a lot of work, the same can't be said for mostly electronic cameras. The mechanical parts are basically limited to the mirror box area in the "middle" of the camera, and electronic parts can be rearranged much more easily. Buttons are mounted on their own, and could easily be moved to the other side. The main circuit board may take up most of the width of the camera, but as most if not all "external" things are connected by cables anyway, moving that to one side shouldn't be a problem either. The entire board could even be effectively rotated rather than mirrored. Considering how many prototype/promotional "one-offs" Pentax have made in the past, redoing the casing etc for a left-handed camera shouldn't be too bad. And there's no competition in the left-handed camera market, so...

Camera Strap for the k30-k50

I'm looking for a strap too. Basically the same as the normal bundled straps, but longer. I would have thought that something so simple would be easily available, but apparently not.
No clips or swivels or anything. Sensible price. Available in the UK.
Anyone?

HD 55-300 WR In-Depth Review Posted

Page 8: "In the event you stopped counting, the HD 55-300 WR debuts as the 12th lens in the Pentax lineup not including the 645D medium format system to offer weather sealing. Note that this does not include the 645D medium format system."
Page 12: "Another bokeh comparison up next, this time between the HD 55-300 and the DA* 60-250 for both highlight bokeh and how they deal with cluttered background branches." is repeated.

Nice review, and nice lens... Rip-off Britain rears its ugly head yet again though - $450 converts (currently) to £272. Even adding VAT, that's nowhere near £400!

K-30 Metering Bug in the new Firmware???

Ok, I've had an experiment with 1.00. I had written a long thing about what happens etc, but I just decided that was pointless.

Basically, in manual mode with no flash, the exposure compensation does the same as it does in other modes, i.e. "offsetting the meter" and resulting in lighter or darker photos.

With flash, it does the same, adjusting the exposure of the final image. The shutter and aperture settings are much less connected to the resulting exposure, as the flash "makes up the difference".

The flash exposure compensation, the separate setting in the flash "screen" seems to do very similar if not identical, but only goes from -2 to +1, so is less useful (and less convenient). The advantage of this one though is that it only affects flash shots.

K-30 Battery and old lenses

CR-V3 batteries do not fit into the K-30 battery chamber at all, even without the AA battery holder. This is a step backwards IMHO. Rechargeable CR-V3s are very cheap, last a very long time, and worked well with older Pentax models.

However, there are cheap Chinese copies of the "block" battery easily available, and cheap clones of the AA battery holder too (the K-r uses the same things), so you don't have to use the expensive "real things".

K-30 Metering Bug in the new Firmware???

No... The flash output could only be adjusted a small amount compared to the exposure compensation. I'm thinking something along the lines of one adjusted flash brightness and the other adjusted length or timing of the flash?

For flash ;)
Maybe that was the purpose of the flash output adjustment, but that has a narrower range.

I'll have to try it again, probably at the weekend.

Interesting to see that they are still using the same box/label style for accessories.

From what I recall, exposure compensation could be set in 1.00 manual mode, and would affect flash output, which was helpful. I haven't updated to 1.01 yet, but don't have my K-30 with me either so can't test it.

Optical preview stops down the lens to the aperture that would be used when taking the photo, rather than the wide-open aperture that is normally active while composing. This is used to check depth of field. It remains stopped down while the button is pressed (if you only tap the button you may not see much happen), and if the shooting aperture is wide-open anyway, it won't stop down. I don't think I've ever tried it in liveview - you may need to look through the viewfinder then too.

Pentax Q-to-K Adapter

I had always wondered why the Q mount had so many contacts, even more than K mount with its very oldschool roots. One or more of them being dedicated to shutter operation makes sense.
It's possible that they designed the Q mount to be entirely K mount compatible, so e.g. A lenses could be used correctly, but haven't followed through with that system for the mount adapter.

This Pentax one does. Presumably it's nearer to a DSLR shutter than either of the Q shutter types.

back button autofocus - how?

Needing any more buttons isn't really true, just needs more options for the existing ones. Like having one of the functions available on the raw/fx button for example. The older cameras (other than the high-end ones) didn't have separate AF and AE-L buttons yet still managed to have both features available at the same time.
As far as I can see (and ignoring the high-end cameras which I hope all have the ability), the K200 was the last camera that had both available at the same time. All before had it, and all since haven't.

I think we'll have to wait and see what that aperture system is like... I'm guessing it's completely manual on all lenses.

I don't think the announcement really qualifies as a "complete AF overhaul"... So it's a choice between two things you can't have for the foreseeable future?

HD is the new replacement for SMC

This.

The Pentax SMC name still has a good reputation, even amongst people loyal to other brands. Changing it (or making new version named) to "HD", which has been overused for years now, is a bad idea.

I expect you can find some cheap nasty ebay filters with "HD coating" or some such...

One thing I like about the design of that is the projecting "eye hole".. Saves having to smush your nose against the back of the camera so much. Other than that it's surprisingly DSLR-looking.

changing the aperture

There is an option, but you shouldn't need to use it as long as your lenses do have an automatic position, as the metering won't be right unless you use automatic. You should use automatic position on the lens, and let the camera set the aperture (or you choose it yourself, using the camera).
