Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 vs Tamron 17-50mm and Pentax DA* 16-50mm

I got the Tamron because I could just about afford it. It does for me, although like other Tamrons it seems to have an internal dust magnet. When the weather is rubbish I use the kit WR 18-55 (although at less than a year old the auto focus drive is failing), so I feel all bases are covered for my needs.

Insert Space Copyright info?

That really should be explained somewhere. I spent ages trying to find a 'space' character and gave up. The problem is that the 'space' symbol displays as the symbol until you exit on 'finish', so I assumed that it was going to be that symbol. Not very intuitive Pentax.

So big thanks for telling us (me) where it is.

K5 generic battery

OK, I have now recharged my OEM battery - 8.2 volts.

If the battery grip would only pass 6v and under it would only need 4 AA batteries, but it has 6.

To my mind it's blindingly obvious that the K7/K5 is designed to work with a range of voltages between 7.2 and just over 9. The OEM battery at full charge falls just above half way between the two values.

I have no qualms about using my after market battery, even if it is slightly lower capacity, at least it's a good standby.

K5 generic battery

Interesting.

This all started out over a voltage difference. Well I measured the almost dead battery in K5 (Pentax original, 560 shots since last charge) and no load was 7.5 volts. My after market spare is fully charged and showing 8 volts no load.

What little experience I have of building and running electronics powered by batteries, and not regulated power supplies, is that they are not that fussy about the voltage within some fairly broad parameters.

Were this not true it would be impossible to run anything on rechargeable batteries - consider your flashgun - 4x 1.5v alkaline batteries - 6v, 4x 1.2v rechargeables - 4.8v; and some of those alkalines will be 1.6v or more when they are fresh out of the packet. Just stuck the meter on some cheap alkalines from the store cupboard, so not fresh ones, reading is 1.55v.

As for my experience of generics, well, so far had one fail, but as it was less than 1/5 the cost of a genuine one, I don't care.

My K20D eats batteries, no matter who's name is on them, the K10D and K5 seem to go for just about ever on one charge.

Later: OK, how stupid am I? The battery grip can use 6x 1.5v AA batteries - that's 9v nominal. More if they are new. Or if you use rechargeables 6x1.2v, 7.2v. So a battery running anywhere between 7.2v and 9.5v is going to be just fine.

My K10D freezes frequently, my K20D less so, and my K5 not at all so far (early days). My neighbour has Canons, and they lock up too - I guess it's just the nature of the beasts.

Great news for me today. Had an email from Pentax France's head of service apologising profusely for the sensor problem, and the Christmas hols delay. They have ordered a replacement and it should be in the mail to me by the end of the week. Huzzah!

I don't care what they do, just as long as they fix it and PDQ at that. I also feel, quite frankly, that some compensation is called for, not least for the expenses incurred in sending the damned things in for rectification.

I have already posted my defective camera's serial number in the poll thread. Do you wanted it posted somewhere else too?

Bad news, still no sign of a replacement K5. Will give them until Friday and then chase it up. This is make or break for Pentax and me. I have used the brand for decades and all my DSLRs have been Pentax. This is, however, the most expensive consumer item I have ever bought and I am not seeing a level of commitment to the product that expect for such an outlay. So there might be a whole shed load of Pentax stuff on eBay in a few week's time.

Travor grip for K20D/K10D

I did have the shutter release problem with my Phottix grip (came from Travor, so I guess it's the same one), and the rear e-dial was very erratic, so I was about to throw it in the bin.

Then I cleaned the contacts on the grip and the camera and when I reattached it I didn't over tighten it - it now works absolutely perfectly.

As for battery consumption, difficult to say, I use it mostly on the K20D and that has always eaten battery power at an alarming rate - the K10D runs almost for ever on one charge.

Pentax K-5 Full-length Review by PentaxForums.com

"I'm also pissed at Pentax for one feature that has not been covered yet, as far as I can see. I want my RAW images in DNG format so that I can use my copy of Photoshop Elements 7 with the RAW plug-in. I designate DNG as my preferred RAW format in the camera, but it insists on giving me the PEF format instead when I use the green setting on the dial. If I don't use a more manual dial setting, I then have to use the Pentax software provided with the camera to convert PEF to DNG so that I can use the software I prefer."

You never will be able to use the software you prefer - but blame Adobe - ACR 6x (no K5 yet, but will be imminent) will only work with Photoshop CS5 and Elements 8 and above. So even when Adobe update ACR, you'll still have to buy an upgrade from them to use PEFs.

Just ordering mine now, after almost defecting to FF Canon. DxO was what swayed me :)

Got to get it in the UK (I'm in France) on account of much better UK pricing. So won't have it to play with for a number of days yet. Also ordering one of the f2.4 35mms to play with.

Neos choose the K-5 & K-X DSLR of 2010

All right, maybe a slight overreaction - ahem, but I use the bracketing button a lot and the IS on/off switch quite a lot, and I always hold my cameras, even the P+S, with two hands.

I'll got to the local (well 40 miles away) camera store in due course and have a play.

No, you can't use the K5 layout to make exposure compensation adjustments with the camera to your eye - the ex compensation button is on the top plate behind the shutter button making it all but impossible to dial in some compensation without holding it in both hands and away from your face. On the K10/20D it's a thumb press and a turn of the front dial. Ditto bracketing. Barcketing buried in a menu somewhere? You've got to be joking, surely.

The menu system will have to be really whizzo to make up for these serious shortcomings.

I've just had a look at this, an in the 'things you might not like' section it mentioned that the screen was flush with the left side of the camera.

So I had look at some pictures of the back - I'd never seen a K7 so assume it is the same. All I can say is what have they done - where have all the controls that were on the back of a K20D gone? Do they think that photographers no longer have thumbs on their left hands?

If they are now buried in a menu somewhere then that makes the ergonomics as bad a as a Canon.

One of the joys of K20D ergonomics is that most of the need to have controls were accessible with one button or switch. Now they're not. YUK, quite frankly. And to think I was going to buy one.

It strikes me that whatever brand of camera body anyone buys into in the future, we're all going to have to get some much better lenses.

I have no empirical data to support this supposition, but I reckon that bodies like the K5 and the D7000 are going to show up shortcomings in our optics much more mercilessly than we might like.

The D7000 will be next up, and probably very similar results.

What DxOMark tells you is that Canon have got a lot of catching up to do.

I have to admit to bias towards DxO tests; I use DxO Optics as my RAW processor and I have always found that the French are much more pragmatic and empirical in their assessments of the relative strengths and weaknesses of various models.

And to think I was on the verge of buying a 7D ;)

I'm pretty much decided that I am not going to buy this body. It's much the same price here as a 7D, but with added handicap of being too bl**dy small.

I'm not going to buy any new body for a while, not until the dust has settled, but I'm not trading up from a K20D for 2mp and some high ISO improvements (I rarely shoot above ISO 400). Video is just a pointless add on to me.

I want to get the better resolution offered by FF bodies like the Sony A900, Nikon 700D and Canon 5D ll. Most of these bodies will, I suspect, be replaced or upgraded in the next 12 months.

I know that technically much higher resolution will be available in an APS-C body in the not too distant future, but if that future is too long in coming, or Pentax do not produce a FF body then it will have to be a system change for me.

I admit my camera fund is burning a hole in my pocket somewhat, but I'll just have to resist :)

I'm thinking about a K5, or a 7D, but to he honest I am struggling to see what is significantly wrong with the K20D. I don't want video and I definitely don't want a smaller body (hence the 7D being in the frame). Better higher ISO performance would be nice, but not worth over £1000.
