Half press of the shutter button turns it off too, albeit only while you hold it.

I've used both of those lenses on ski trip before - I use a lowepro toploader zoom case - it can only fit the camera and either lens but not both, so you could only use one lens on each trip.
I don't think you'll need anything longer than the 50-135 as it's perfect for the sort of distances on the slopes. The 16-50 is good for scenes and the 50-135 good for action shots.

Universal filter system? for 27mm thread & above

The biggest downside with using one threaded filter and several step up rings is you cant use the lens hood with a step up ring - you can't with the square system filters either unless you mount one on the filter holder but they aren't great.
I personally never use UV filters as I've never thought the risk of scratching lenses is that high - and in 5 years with 6 or more lenses I've never scratched one.

Which one to choose, Pentax 60-250/4 or the new version of Bigma?

DA* 300 f/4 is a great lens at all apertures and will give you the cleanest images to crop to get the framing you want - it has 1.5 stops advantage over the bigma which gets the K5 back to very acceptable noise / ISO levels, allowing you to crop heavy or blow up in print to the magnification of the 500mm - the detail lost in lower resolution is less than that lost from 1.5 stops of noise.
Other benefits - it's smaller, lighter, will give a brighter viewfinder - can you tell I'm a fan of this lens?

I would recommend Dell too

One more thing to check is the gamma setting of your current monitor

Prints can often appear darker especially after a stretch in front of your monitor editing, brightness can tweaked easily, getting good colour is the biggest challenge :)

K-5 GPS Options

There is an android app (not sure about iphone) that will do some of the work for you - I've not used it but understand it will allow you to track your route and allow you to add points when you take photos - this data can be merged with the image files and is synchronised by the time stamp on the file. As I said I've not tried it and can't recall the name but I know it exists.

Perfect exposure time in Bulb mode

Normally I make a best metering calculation - then add half a stop. This means if I meter at ISO12800 and get 1 seconds I then set to ISO100 and add 7 stops which gets me to 128 seconds (2 mins) - add half a stop (1 minute) and shoot at 3 minutes - but It's trail and error from that point. There really is no need to worry about exact timing at these exposures.

Perfect exposure time in Bulb mode

Bear in mind that at 288 seconds and accidental half stop over exposure is an additional 144 second - that's more than 2 minutes tolerance.
Also extrapolating a metered reading at ISO 12800 back to 100 does not guarantee results - in my experience using this method gives under exposed images and additional minutes are often required - not sure if this is because the sensor is not totally linear in this respect or it's an accumulation of rounding errors but the result means some inevitable trial and error.

Stops on the K-5
Posted By Darren

One stop is defined as halving or doubling one of the three elements of exposure - for ISO and shutter duration this is obvious as their scales are linear so you can mathematically double or half - with aperture it's the same principle but concerns area - so for aperture multiply by 1.4 to double the area. Doubling or halving the exposure does not offer much flexibility so cameras can work in half, third or smaller divisions of whole stops.

Pentax app, good idea?

In my view an app containing only reference material is of little value and would not be the best way to host his kind of thing - this forum is much better for that kind of thing. The app would either be too big or require large data downloads.
For a Pentax app functionality would be most useful - like tethered shooting, time lapse, bulb ramping, HDR time lapse, remote shooting etc.

You can also use the RAW button to swap in and out of Raw + mode if you need to - it's worth grabbing a raw in difficult lighting in case you are set up down the line for processing.

I've suffered this in the past - there is no way to stop it entirely as it is needed to trigger the wireless flash - block it from directly hitting the model if catch-lights are a problem - even a finger should do the trick. The wireless flash will work from a bounced/diffused signal from it.

Remote control Video question

Hi - I have been using my K5 to record movies of birds feeding in my garden - I have the K5 lined up and focused on the spot where the birds will feed, I have HDMI out to my TV using a long lead and a wired remote to hit the shutter button when birds land to feed.
The problem is the screen will switch off after 3 minutes or so and say "pressing the shutter button while live view is on starts movie recording" If I switch the TV off and on again live view starts again for another 3 minutes. Why does this happen? It's not linked to the auto off setting on the camera and it's not a sensor heating issue as this kicks in after 5 or 6 bouts of 3 minutes standby.
Why can't I have the display on until the sensor reaches max temperature? Why does it turn off like this?

AF microadjust on K-5

I think that off is simply off - I guess the message is trying to say is lenses will focus according to the tolerance of that particular lens, i.e. if the lens is at the extreme of it's tolerance it may be off with a camera with a mid or additive tolerance - I see what they mean but am struggling to explain it myself - just simply off is far easier to understand.
I also think you hit the nail on the head when you say "In my experience a perfect adjustment made on close range & max aperture doesn't guarantee good results in real life situations"

Auto ISO parameter, what is it?
Posted By Darren
Replies: 5

In Av mode it works as below:
fast is biased towards faster shutter speeds and therefore faster subjects
slow is biased towards lower ISO and slower shutter speeds
The shutter speed is selected based on the focal length in order to reduce camera shake

I can't work out what affect if any it would have in either Tv or TAv modes - perhaps someone else knows this?

To answer your first point - Using TAv mode with auto ISO is one of the greatest things about Pentax imo - a great balance between control and speed of use.

K7 and K5 have HDMI out that can plug direct into a monitor or TV - any camera with live view and HDMI out will work I believe - but K5 and K7 definitely do because I have done it lots.

Anyone use PSP X4?

I use X4 and can recommend it, although I use DCU4 for RAW processing as it is much more flexible and I've found it the best for translating colour.
The best thing about X4 is it now supports 16 bit for editing and plugins. Add to that Nik Colour FX (if you buy the pro version) and few new adjustment layers it really is worth the upgrade.
The RAW converter is much better than before but it's not on par with most other options in my experience.

I get a problem like this if I use the checkmark function in the program the next time I try to open it. Try deleting the file checkinfo.ini if you have it in the folder C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Pentax\Digital Camera Utility 4

Anyone Use the Included Software?

I use it all the time and believe it gives much better results than anything else I have tried. The interface is a little unusual but I have it configured across 2 screen and it gives a much bigger preview area that way.
Automatic lens correction including distortion, noise, CA all related to in camera settings for me is a real time saver.
The help files a basic and do no cover some of the settings like colour fine tune but once you figure it out it's great.
Batch processing, instant jpg extraction, jpg setting bought across from camera, rating system and built in data for all Pentax lenses makes it my first choice and I have tried many RAW editors over the last few years.
