Great how-to. I had this in mind when I wrote about this, but never got around to doing it all again and making all the pictures. I have a picture here somewhere of the position of the lens release mechanism, I'll add it here.

lens release button

Thanks Craig. The retainer is a circlip indeed. Could have been a plastic one that broke. I made my own metal circlip this time by cutting a piece out of a normal round washer, but you would have to have the exact right size lying around. Did I mention it is really tiny? (inside diameter around 1.5mm) Also, the outside diameter can't be very large either as it has to fit into a recession in the front cover. To get the homemade circlip right I gently squeezed it with pliers until it fit tight around the button shaft recession. Best option is to order it beforehand as I should have done. Just don't assume a circlip will be waiting for you at the bottom of your camera as I did.

I will try and describe the disassembly involved.
You need to remove the bottom plate. There's ten screws holding it (two underneath the battery cover). Please keep track of all the screws and which holes they belong. You'll need to devise a system for this. Maybe even tape them to a piece of paper in the correct order. Work on a clean desk in a systematic fashion and have the time to work on it with good lighting.

If you're insecure of your own mechanical abilities involving an expensive piece of photographic equipment, don't even start. You can still stop here and reassemble if the task looks daunting.
Remove the battery and remove the screw at the bottom of the battery compartment. Remove the screws on the sides of the camera. Remove the two screws underneath the flash. Remove the eyecup and the two screws underneath that.
The one that took me a long time to find is the screw underneath the left rubber grip on the front of the camera (a bit under where it says K-5). Peel the rubber grip from the top until you see the screw. Remove it. You'll probably need some new double-sided tape to re-attach the rubber afterwards.
Remove the screws holding the metal lens mount to the camera. Remove it.
Now you can gently lift up the top cover. It doesn't need to go all the way off. The goal is to remove the front cover. You'll need to open the sides a bit with a plastic opening tool/guitar pick. The external flash socket is attached to the top with wires. If you remove a screw on the back of that you can take it out and remove the whole front.
Look carefully at how the system works. The lens securing pin assembly will probably come off. Attach the rubber to the release button shaft. Stick it in the front cover and push it all the way down. You'll be able to attach the circlip from the back. This prevents the button from falling out.
Reattach everything and screw it back down. Make sure the release button works as it should. Now just do everything in the reverse order. Best to use a Giottos air blower or similar in between and afterwards to get out any dust from the parts and the inside of the camera.

Lens release button replacement

Yes I did, I made a C-ring myself out of a normal ring which I cut with a Dremel. Here's my written guide to replace the button and retainer. https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/115-pentax-k-5/285879-lens-release-button-2.html#post3191939

You do have to open up the camera and take of the front to replace it correctly. You do need a metal c-clip. So the three parts are the button, the rubber gasket and the c-clip. Please don't use glue as this is not a good long-term solution.

By the way, Foto Maerz will sell you the parts if you need them.

I agree that this is a common misconception, that pro photographers would only use the best camera available. Pros would choose the most suitable camera that gets the job done. It's just a tool to get their vision across. Why would you need a magnesium body and weather sealing in a studio environment?

Consumers buy into these kinds of things, wanting the stuff that pros have. I'll admit I'm a gearhead who's a sucker for this as well. Same thing happens in other hobbies like cycling. How many amateur cyclists do you see with expensive gear, carbon fibre frames and whatnot? Fact is the gear makes a difference sure, but it's the person who gets the job done, not the gear. And how much of a difference is debatable. Any recent camera body is so advanced that most amateurs don't even use it to it's full potential. I know I don't.

So this K-70 will probably be more than enough camera for most of us. Sure we can talk about features and design choices, and that we'd like this or that to be included, but to be fair at their price point (Pentax and other brands) cameras nowadays offer so much. We're pretty much spoiled people nagging over here. As long as we realise this once in a while, there's nothing wrong with that. First world problems ;)

Did anybody get a post-Brexit-vote Photo bargain on price or shipping from the UK?

Ì bought a lightly used K-3 II from the SRS Ebay shop. The price was good, but not the superbargain one might have hoped for with the Brexit and all. Paypal earns a lot on the exchange rate anyway compared to XE.com midmarket rates.

Have you experimented with the highlight and shadow settings? Look for the recommended settings here or on youtube. Don't throw away your old shoes yet.

Otherwise, I really like the K-S2 (20MP), and there's a new K-70 coming which is it's successor.

Just a quick tip for the 50mm EX Macro. I also have one which is a very good and sharp lens. It can suffer from sunlight though. The original hood is ridiculously expensive.
I bought a "RISE(UK) 55mm Standard Screw-in Metal Lens Hood for Canon Nikon Sony Pentax" on Ebay which was only $1.99 shipped, it's metal and it works like a charm.

I have received my K-3 today. It is completely new with a manufacture date of 11th February 2015. Never been touched. Good seller.

Btw, I just saw they have the same deal again at the moment.
