I use the "instant jpeg from raw utility" available from Digital Photography - RawWorkflow.com - Instant JPEG From Raw Utility
It is not a raw to jpeg converter, but instead simply extracts the jpeg that is already in the raw image. So you get whatever jpeg setting you have specified in your camera's options settings. If you want some other global changes applied to your images you'll need a real converter. However for a quick conversion this utility can't be beat. A simple right click in windows explorer (or Mac finder) and every raw image in the folder has its jpeg extracted and placed in the folder, The original raw file remains unchanged

I don't believe anything is really backed up unless there are at least 2 copies of it and a third copy stored off site.
I use a mac and use carbon copy cloner to copy files to an external drive. Then monthly or more often if it is really important stuff, I burn the files to a DVD and store those at my workplace. That way if the house burns down, I'd lose my computer but the files will live on.

I'm assuming this is the model for Pentax
Sigma site Compatibility Table for ELECTRONIC FLASH EF-500 DG SUPER - SIGMA CORPORATION lists as compatible with a k100 so it should work for most if not all functions
Who is selling these for $50? If new, at that price I want one for my K10d also. If used, personally I'll pass unless I know the seller and have a full right to return it. Too easy for these things to go wonky

DNG or the Pentax raw format?
The Pentax software that came with the camera works under Windows XP. However I prefer the latest version of Google's Picasa (free) for working with DNGs on my old XP laptop. Picasa does a decent job of cataloging and minor tweeking. it just runs faster than Pentax software on my anemic laptop.
If you can spend some money, consider Adobe's Lightroom, better cataloging and excellent post processing. I loads just about any raw format you can think of and when a new camera comes out they issue updates for the new formats quite rapidly. I do most of photo processing on my mac and have no idea as to how well it would run on an XP machine. But you could download a trial version from Adobe and see how it performs on your computer.
I hope others on the forum also respond to your query, as I would like to know how others feel about the other choices out there

About a month ago I got one at the local Circuit City for $26. I was "open box" but complete, case, manual, etc included. There clearly had it in stock for a long time - the manual did not even mention the K10d yet alone the K20d. I had to download PDF of the current model from Pentax

Nice shot, I haven't been over to Leonard's Mill for awhile, I'll have to get out there soon before the leaves fall

Picked up one of these off the open box table at the local Circuit City for $26. Felt like I won the lottery.
It works great and I could have returned it if it hadn't

Buy what you need for what you are shooting.
This whole movement to "full frame" (35mm film size sensors) seems senseless to me. All I want is a decent pixel count and good noise free high ISO performance. Admittedly that is easier with larger sensors, but as manufacturing techniques get better over time you'll see that in small sensors too. I don't care how the engineers finally accomplish those goals. I just want to make pictures. I expect both "full frame", APS size and 4 thirds size cameras will be around a long time and all current lens will remain usable.
If Pentax brings out a Full frame dSLR and a lot of folks move to it - good. Then there will be a lot of cheap DA lenses on the used market for guys like me.

WORM will probably be used more for cases where there must be no evidence of image manipulation. ie Crime scene photos.

Thanks to all for your quick and insightful replies.
I hadn't realized the difference between P-TLL and TLL. I have since researched that.
Messages on these forums and info elsewhere seem to question the results of the P-TLL implementation on the K10d. Because of that and price I believe I'll go with the Sunpak 383. I can purchase that for a quarter of the price of the Pentax unit, and even if I also purchase a safe sync as well, it is still way cheaper. Since I won't be using the flash a lot anyway, this seems the way to go. A few test shots should result in correct exposures
My research seems to show that the Sunpak only puts out about 7 volts, and the camera is good up to 30 so it should be fine. You can bet I'll check the flash voltage with a meter before hooking it up!

Hi everyone,
I new to this forum and dSLR use and have recently purchased a K10d.
I am very pleased with the camera but am not so pleased with results using the built in flash. That said, I would like to purchase a flash unit for the camera that allows bounce and off camera use.
I realize that the dedicated units made by Pentax would be easiest to use and provide TLL exposure setting. However they are pricey and at this point I would rather spend my limited disposable income on more lens.
So I am looking for a cheaper alternative, something like a SunPak 383. But I understnd that such units can produce excess voltage and damage the camera. So I think I need some sort of adapter.
Thanks in advance for any advice on this
