I was lucky enough to get my KP with all 3 grips. Coming from a K50 (and P50, Super A before that) I liked the big grip and thats what stayed on the body. I tend to wrap the strap around my wrist a couple of times to be safe. I tried using a wrist loop instead of a strap, but found it feeling rather unsecure when changes lenses.

After some deliberation, I ended picking up a Sigma 10-20 f3.5 HSM lens for a reasonable price. Not really had a proper play with it yet, but it was in excellent condition, boxed with a pouch and filter. Its a little slow to lock focus, but given its primarily for landscape work, I don't see that as a hinderance. I got it for £180, whereas the cheapest I could find a 12-24 was £289, so I hope I've made the right choice!

Looking for a bit of advice over which secondhand lens to buy.
I have a budget of around £300.
I'm looking at 3 lens, all of which are well regarded within the pentax community.
I currently have a a KP with the following lenses.
DA 10-17mm
DA 18-135mm
DA 55-30mm PLM
DA 35mm f2.4mm
DA 50mm f1.8mm
The lenses I'm thinking of are
DA 15mm
DA 12-24mm
DA 16-85mm
Most of my photography is outdoors, either landscapes or transport. I really like the 18-135, but I find it lacks sharpness, hence my looking at the wider end of the range.
Are there any other lenses I should be looking at that I haven't considered?

I can't see them ever releasing a camera without a rear screen. One of the most usefult things about a DSLR is the ability to have a look at your pictures and jedge whether you are happy with them. Very useful if checking for exposure and whether correction is required.
I'm hoping the OP just uses his KP more and finds that once they become more familiar with the camera that the preceived downsides start to disappear.

With my KP I use it for a number of uses, so I've got a selection of zooms plus a couple of DA primes.
DA 10-17mm
DA 18-135mm
DA 55-300 PLM
DA 35mm f2.4
DA 50mm f1.8
I'd like to add possibly a DA 12-24mm, DA 100m macro and a DA*300mm f4 at some point when funds permit.
The 18-135mm is my most used lens, followed by the 55-300mm PLM, both of which take some pretty good shots. The 10-17mm is quite a fun lens, although I haven't had the chance to play with it much so far!

Having gone from a Super A to a K50 to a KP (via some digital compacts and bridge camera, which we wont talk about) I can't say I've ever been bothered by lack of a top LCD. There is plenty of info in the viewfinder and you can tweak settings quite easily once you know your way around the camera. Perhaps its more a case of getting used to using the KP? It took me a little time to adjust from the K50 to the KP, but i don't really have to think about it too much now.
The thing that I found most useful was changing to back button focus (decoupling the shutter button so that it didn't do the focusing), rather than relying on the shutter button to focus and set the exposure at the same time.

I went from a K50 to a KP, mainly because I fancied a KP and there was a great deal on.
It took me a little while to get used to it and I'm still gettting the hang of it. But I'm very happy with the focusing and exposure side of things. It seems to get more things right more of the time.

If its any consolation to the OP, I also have this issue. I've moved from a K50 to the KP and on the K50 the green button is on the top plate. No doubt I'll get used to it. Its the only niggle I have with my KP and its really me that is at fault, not the camera!

My first Pentax was a P50 2nd hand back in 1990. I almost bought a P30n, but liked the P50 more. The only real difference between the two was the P50 having a choice of TWO program modes!
I bought a Super A in 1997 which I loved. Wonderful film camera and superior to the (newer) P50 in most ways. Still got both of them, even though I've got no intention of using either again.

Is it possible that a gear inside could have stripped a tooth, thus not advancing the film enough between exposures?

Aaah, misunderstood you. I thought you were talking about the polarity of the magnet.
I understand about the cables being swapped over, meaning the horsehoe will move in opposite directions depending on the current flow through the coils.
Going back to the magnet, you say the holding force is greater on the white solenoids, which will be due to the magnet located in the middle between the coils at the top. I havent got a solenoid to hand at the moment, but would removing the magnet in the white solenoid and replacing it with the magnet from the green solenoid fix that? Assuming its possible to remove the magnet in the first place?

Just a thought, would it be feasible to swap just the magnet from the green K50 solenoid to the white solenoid from the MZ7 to obtain the correct polarity and holding force?

So the flash release solenoid will not work correctly if used in he K50? I assume the other (on the left) would be ok to replace the green solenoid found in the K50?

Just a heads up for those that need a white solenoid, the MZ-7 also has two white solenoids. One for releasing the flash and one for the aperture block. The flash release one is easier to get at, although you do have to remove the top plate. The one for the aperture block is attached to a ribbon cable rather than individual wires and is harder to remove.

Firmware was updated when first released, I know the 55-300 has no aperture lever, so is unaffected by the aperture block issue. I meant that I just hadn't had a chance to play with it yet.
Annnywaaay, the MZ7 body turned up, but after having spent £8 on batteries for it, it wouldn't set the shutter, so I assume its got the usual MZ stripped plastic cog issue. Not to worry, as I'd bought it for spares anyway.
The good news is, that the MZ7 has TWO of the white solenoids. I suspect that the majority of MZ series have the same configuration. One for the aperture block and one for the flash raising. I chose to remove the flash one as its easier to get at. The one for the aperture block is soldered onto a ribbon cable, rather than 2 wires like on the K50, so a little harder to get to.
To get at the flash solenoid, remove the bottom plate, remove the lens mount surround, remove the film back (press the upper sprung loaded pin down to release the hinge pin and swing away from the body), remove the two side panels and then remove the top plate (carefully, as there are quite a few wires and ribbon cables in there). All the screws are visible and fairly obvious.The solenoid is located in the top plate and is held in place with one screw. Once released there is enough slack in the wires to withdraw the solenoid and de-solder the wires. I've put the MZ7 back together for now, the only difference is the flash doesnt stay down.
I'm hanging fire on fitting the replacement solenoid to my K50, as its been fine since I sanded off the horseshoe on the original green solenoid.

I've just purchased an MZ7 from e-bay for £9.99, so I hope it has the correct white solenoid!
Since performing the sanding on the horseshoe on my K50 it hasn't had any issues, although its had very limited use since. Im hoping to use it this weekend, as I'm dying to try out my new DA 55-300 PLM WR lens.
Assuming the MZ7 works ok, I may well use it for a bit first, as I have some film in my Super A that I'd like to finish off before I carve up the MZ7!

I have two Sigma 70-300 lens. One a DL and the other a DG APO. Both were a little lacking on the sharpness side of things. I've also got a Samsung 50-200 lens (basically a DA lens rebadged) and tended to get better results than both the Sigmas.
I've treated myself to the latest DA 55-300 WR PLM blah blah and certainly the sharpness at longer focal lengths is much better than both the Sigmas and at least as good at the 50-200 lens.
I got both Sigma lenses secondhand, so whilst I can't vouch for their condition, they seemed to be well looked after. They are also quite heavy lenses, so that may well be a factor.
Sadly with so many things (particularly lenses!) you get what you pay for.

Why would you try and install a blue solenoid in the camera. Its has difference specifications from the Green & White solenoids. Its no wonder it didn't work, its the wrong solenoid. I've read the whole post and nowhere has someone suggested installing a blue solenoid.

I've had a K50 from new since March 2015 and its had no issues whatsoever, until 3 days ago. Was trying out my new DA 55-300 (KAF4 lens, no aperture lever) and it was fine. Swapped back to my 18-135 and I started getting dark frames. Tried again later and all seemed to be ok. It was only about 2 deg C, so it may have been related to the cold.
So I decided to take the casing off and have a look at the solenoid. Took out the horseshoe and put some bevels on the horseshoe tips and carefully sanded the whole thing with some 1200 sandpaper to make the surface smoother. Put it back together and everything still works, so I'll see if the problem re-occurs.
From start to finish the whole job only took me an hour thanks to the guides and comments on here! Fingers crossed!
