Pentax 645 Battery Holder

Quick update. I got a 3D printed prototype made. It wasn’t printed at the correct resolution, but was still good enough to test fit in my camera. Wasn’t perfect, but I could get it to lock. Took a bit of pressure to get it locked, but it did work. It seems it’s a little wide on the outside where it’s supposed to mount flush with the camera. Not sure if it’s because the print was a bit “off” of if my model is a bit off. I’m going to try printing another version and see how that works.

Honestly not sure what the best option would be for this. The 9v version should be a lot easier. I have no experience with plastic, so not sure how easy it would be to transfer over from an old grip to a new grip. My current grip is in perfect working order, so I definitely am not going to tear it apart to try for obvious reasons. I’m just trying to help out with the basic frame at this point.

I read a thread in here and someone mentioned they were coming up with a replacement battery holder for the 645. Someone also posted in the 645 Facebook group that they were doing the same thing. Might be it's the same person, but I can't be sure. He has posted a start on a STL file he was working on, and I had a look at it. The roots of the project were definately there, but it had a ways to go. Until that point, I never realized there was much demand for this item, but it appears there is. Regardless, I figured this might be something I can work on to help out the comminity. Seeing as I basically do this sort of reverse engineering for a living, I figured I'd give a go at modeling this. So what I've come up with I think is a very good start. I've got my friend 3d printing a prototype so I can see if it will actually physically fit in the camera as it's supposed to, and I'll go from there. I've attached a few pictures to show my progress. Feel free to give me any input on what might be a good thing to change. This is basically modelled like the existing on, and the person who was working on it, mentioned he was doing this up to work with a 9V battery, so that is definately something I can look into as well if the interest is actually there. Only thing I've not modelled in is the texturue on the grip. I probably won't be able to easily duplicate the pattern, but I can definately come up with something.

As you can see from my overlay of my 3D scan vs the CAD I created, it's not perfect, but seeing as the original is like a million years old (lol), I took some educated guesses. I'll know for sure if it's a problem when I do my test fit of the 3D printed prototype.

I've got this old teleconverter in my possession. I was looking on eBay to see what these are selling for. Any of the ones I've seen are listed as 2X-1. The one I have is 2X-8. Just curious what the difference is. I can't seem to find any listings for the 2X-8, so it's got my curioius.

Thanks in advance.

Speed Ring question

So I've got a softbox and an octabox. Both are mounted to Speedotron speed ring system. I recently purchased a Godox AD200 Pro and wanting to use it with my boxes. Can I just get a Bowens speedring, then get the Godox S Bracket in Bowens mount, and I'm good to go? I don't know if the mount on the speed ring for the softbox / Octabox is universal or not. If anyone has other suggestions, I'm all ears.

Thanks in advance.

Only time I've had to worry about write speed is if I'm shooting RAW to both card slots. If I'm only shooting RAW to one, I have no issues with speed for my style of shooting, but writing to both cards, I do notice it occasionally.

I personally have found the Wasabi batteries only last about half as long as the Pentax batteries. That being said, any of the off brand ones I've used have had similar results.

I've never used Capture 1, so I can't say much on that, but generally I think using some sort of a preset may very well work, but then your work will look very similar to others who use the same presets. IMO, develop your own look, create your own profile (if you want / need one) and tweak each file accordingly. People will want to hire you based on your unique look, and possibly not so much for a more generic look that is similar to others. Some food for thought for you. :-)

As others have said, if you're in a studio environment with little ambient light, you can freeze motion. Jumping dog, or something else. See my example here on 500px. Hair fling froze with 1/160 second.

Shooting in snow will definitely throw off your meter readings if you're shooting in priority modes. (AV in your case) I did up this short article a couple years ago, so have a read. Hopefully you find it of some use.

You don't actually have to go into LV to do it. This works, but not needed. The button to press to switch out how the 4 way works is just above the 4 way. I believe it's the right most one. Don't have camera with me, so can't 100% be sure.

Repeatability of image in focus using non-central focusing points on K-1

Are you doing these tests wide open? I don't know the characteristics of this lens, but maybe it's not so much missing focus, but maybe it's just not as sharp off center wide open. Not uncommon with a lot of lenses, so perhaps this is the issue, generally not sharp in the area of question vs missed focus..??

Improving battery life on K-1

Here is a test I did with my K-1 that might be of some interest. It should give you an idea of how many shots you can potentially get doing interval shooting. When I did these tests, I had most things turned off, but I did forget to turn off the GPS, so that was also drawing power during the tests I did. Hope you find it useful.

One of my first ones with the K-1. One thing I learned from this is even if you have the camera in full manual, you might get flicker in your final product. It seems it was due to slight exposure variations between frames, most likely because the actual aperture on the lens isn't 100% consistent. Now when I play about, I use old manual lenses so the aperture doesn't change between frames.

Mine is the same. Slot one sticks. I find it works best ejecting from the corner of the card vs the center, then it hardly ever sticks.

This is actually where I got the lens from. An old Praktica camera. I'll mount it on my K-1 for fun, just to see how good or bad it really is. Can't hurt to try. I was looking on E-bay Canada and was surprised they were selling upwards of $100, especially for a F4.5 lens. Might be a good time to sell it. lol

Has anyone ever tried out this lens? Can't find it in the review database and couldn't find any posts for that specific lens. Might give it a try on the K-1, but curious if others have played with it and what they thought of it.

Looks like support has been added for K1 mark II. (RAW Files) Thought those with this camera would be interested in knowing it's now supported. (minus the pixel shift of course)
