any good reports about this lens ?

. . . you might have a point there !

I have been using the kit lens and to be honest I havn't needed any extra length in the situations I've been in. But I do seem to use most of the kit lens range 18-55. Oh no, does this mean I have to be considering the Sigma 17-70 again !?

thanks, BARCUD

I havn't come across the lens reviews before. Very useful and the lens seems quite good and perhaps I should go for it.

thanks again, BARCUD

Hi, I live in the UK and put a post in the wanted ad's for any lens for sale here in the UK. Unfortunately I had no replies !

I am looking for prime lenses and perhaps a wide angle too. As for primes I've come across a 70mm f2.4 at a good price here in the UK and was wondering if you guys had any views/experiences with this lens ? I'm generally into taking photos of landscapes/lakes/mountains/rural buildings. At the moment I am restricted to using my kit lens.

Any input gratefully recieved.

. . . that clears that up nicely for me.

I'm not intending to concentrate on micro work but rather more landscape so a prime would suit better after reading the above. Though the macro appears to have a dual role i.e. both macro and non macro, the prime would benefit in terms of sharpness at distance and speed.

many thanks once again, BARCUD

Hi guys, what is the difference between a prime lens and a macro lens ?
For instance what is the difference between a 50mm prime and a 50mm macro lens ?

Yes a tripod may well help matters. I use a mini tripod with my GX100 and it makes alot of difference at slow speeds and low light.

As for focal lengths I've had a look at my photos and focal lengths are all over the place. Lots of 55's , 35's and 18's.

thanks for all the input guys.

And again lots to think about.

At the moment I'm getting by with the kit lens but I do very often find myself at dusk taking mountain shots and to be honest I think the kit lens struggles a bit. A lens that could cope with such circumstances would be good.

What I don't want to end up with, and it might be a case of resistance is futile, but I don't want a bag full of lenses ! for one thing, the main thing, I can't afford it. Hence getting my next lens right is a must .

So for me the mountains and dusky skies is where I'm at. So perhaps I should look at a prime lens ?

Hi guys, I'm just getting to grips with the different types of lens available to compliment my kit lens on my new K10D. I've been looking at lens such as the sigma 17-70 but my question concerns prime lens.

Can you get wide angle prime lenses ?

If you get a 50mm prime for example do you have to move towards the subject until it fills as much of the frame as you want ? Is a lot of cropping involved ? Isn't this very restrictive ?

many thanks guys that's a mystery solved. The viewfinder looks just how you described it. There is one speck but I'll leave it where it is I think. I could blow it off but who knows where it might end up !?

great forum :)

Hi guys, I'm into the second week with my new K10D, there's a whole bunch of stuff to learn but up to now it's looking good.

But is this anything to worry about, when I look through the viewfinder it seems to be covered in very fine dots. Is the view finder glass just textured ? There is one large speck though that can be clearly seen.
When I take the lens off the dotty texture and the dot is still there so the lens has nothing to do with it.
Am I just seeing the viewfinder OR am I actually seeing what goes to the sensor ??

hope this make sense. BARCUD

Hi guys, on the subject of filters what do you guys see as the most useful to have ? At the moment I am thinking of UV, polorizer, and not sure about ND filter.
What do you use the most ?

. . . a couple of weeks back my wife and I were at a well known waterfall taking in the views. These were my pre Pentax days so I was taking shots with my GX100. All around DSLR's were firing off. Some directly into the sun with no filters which makes you think sometimes ! Anyway, I came across a Pentax lens cover on the floor. I carried it around looking for Pentax owners but alas Cikon and Nanon cameras were everywhere. I was about to give up and was putting the lens cap on a rock when a ladies face lit up when she noticed me putting the lens down. And this are the exact words I said to her to my wife's utter disbelief ,
' have you got a Tampax ?' Why the heck I said that instead of Pentax only my brain knows !!! I smiled, she smiled, and my wife growled in my ear that I had said it on purpose. I didn't , honest ;)

. . . I like your logic !

The 1st dslr I looked at was the Pentax K10D. The 2nd dslr I looked at was the Fujifilm S5 ! I could use my Nikon lenses with it AND I also have a Fujifilm Finepix Z602S which uses the XD card. The price was also good £499. It has a fantastic dynamic range which appealed to me BUT effectively it is only 6 megs !

SOOOOOOOOOOOOO, I ended up with the Pentax ; )

Hi ya'll, first day with the K10D and we're still engaged : )

I usually tuck my GX100 in my inside coat pocket but not this baby! Strap on and over my shoulder it went. I guess I'll look a little bit less conspicuos when I get a camera bag. I went out in the morning and took a few photos in the green mode, or is it blue, auto ? just to get a feel for the camera. One of the reasons I chose the K10 is it feels like a camera, just the right weight. The downloaded photos were okay but I wanted to go out in the afternoon and try things a little differently. Firstly I wanted to shoot in RAW which is what I always do, and secondly I wanted to try it out in a place which I knew would give anyone and their camera a tough time. The place is pretty dark but lots of overhead sunshine in spits and spots. I'm putting a book together and some of the photos will be from this place.

The results ? = I judged the photos to be slightly out of focus as I went through them so started deleting them one by one. THEN, I realised they were all jpg's !?

Do you have to activate the RAW button everytime you want to take a photo RAW ?

What I initially thought were out of focus photos were photos that appeared incredibly soft ! I worked the jpg's in Elements 6 and things improved a fair bit. BUT, you can work highlights or clipped highlights a bit better in RAW. With the jpg's I was left with some highlights clipped that I couldn't draw no detail from. With my GX100 I alter the exposure compensation, can this be done with the K10 ?

Tomorrow is another day. BARCUD

. . . in the past I've been a major contributor to a couple of forums and on the whole very much became a better person for it and enjoyed the experience. Once you learn the basic rules of engagement, sorry I'll start that again, once you learn the basic rules of participation then forums can be excellent places to learn and teach. AND let's face it, it's all free! How many books would you have had to have read in the past to gleen such vast amounts of information?

It works like this.

I write a question in a polite and considerate manner and you guys write me a reply in a polite and considerate manner.

You guys write questions in a polite and considerate manner and who knows I might gain enough knowledge of the subject to be able to reply in a polite and considerate manner.

You never write questions whilst under the influence of drink or mind and behavioural altering drugs.

You never answer questions whilst under the influence either. You will only jump up in a start from your bed in the morning and rush to the computer to see 'what the hell did I write last night ?'

The person behind the words you are reading has feelings.

Always be positive in your contributions whether you agree with what you are reading or not.

I'm getting a warm fuzzy feeling from this forum. Or is the laptop overheating on my lap. I'm loving you guys already :)

Hi, I recently posted about suitable lens' for a K10D. I still can't get my head around the numbers involved SO, my current compact lens is 24-72 that much I know ! NOW, the photos I get from that lens is perfect in terms of wide angle. There is an adapter that can take it to 19 but that would be too much.

What would be the equevalent numbers I need to look for if I want a similar lens for the K10D ?

Could an adapter be bought for the kit lens to get a similar view ?

I do hope that make sense !?

I use a fuji bridge and an olympus compact sometimes and they both use AA's. No problem with cameras that use AA's but I don't want another AA using camera, that would be a bit of a strain on battery resourses!
My wife uses AA's in her camera too !
Like the K10D the K200D looks to be a really nice camera though : )

thanks for the help, BARCUD
