I guess no one has tried it? I saw the email but haven’t figured out if any of the mentioned improvements would help me out (my needs are simpler than a pro’s needs). I have PhotoLab 6 and use it often.

Infinity focus looks good on my K1.
Here's a jpg that is straight out of camera, no edits. Link: Superstitions
Here's an edited version taken from the raw file and processed the way I like:
On another topic, there's been discussion about fringing and CA. The lens does have a bit of CA wide open, though not much. I think I can get CA from just about any lens with this scene. Link to full sized SOOC jpg: Fridge
If anyone is curious, I took the same scene two years ago when I first got a lens that is something like 3 times the cost of the macro (DFA 85): DFA*85 f1.4 When I uploaded the two SOOC jpgs for the macro, I noticed the earlier photos and thought the comparison interesting. I know, the two lenses are designed for entirely different purposes. I don't think I should embed the DFA 85 photo here, since it's really off-topic, but if you are interested, follow the link and you can see/perhaps appreciate how nice the macro is.
There's still no differentiation between the AW and WR versions of the lens. I noticed that SmugMug has it identified as the WR version, like LR does with the raw files. It doesn't make much difference to me now as I no longer own the WR one, but it would be nice.

I’ve played around with the focus limiter a bit, though I haven’t really tried everything about it.
The first thing I noticed is that the camera reverts to no focus limiter whenever it is turned off.
As far as using it, the camera doesn’t go through the whole cycle when it is looking for focus. I tried having it set to the far side and then trying to focus on something that was close - it went through a short cycle and stopped, indicating it could not achieve focus. I can definitely see myself using it.
I can see the advantages and disadvantages for having the camera revert to limiter off whenever the camera is turned off - too many times I’ve turned on the camera and started shooting without checking the settings. On the other hand, if I’m shooting macro stuff I will often turn off the camera when I’m adjusting things, which would mean that I would have to go into the menu to turn it back on each time. I don’t see that as a big deal - if I’m shooting true macros, I’m most likely focusing manually. I think I’d use it more for far subjects.

No takers for the Phoenix area or Vegas the week of Christmas? If no one local speaks up soon, I have someone who’s already asked about me shipping to them (US).

I just couldn’t bring myself to toss out the lens, once I decided to buy the new AW lens instead of finding out how much it would be to repair it. I’m hoping that someone local would like to take it on as a project. ---------- Post added 12-11-22 at 06:19 AM ---------- Still no one in either the Phoenix area (this week) or Vegas (Dec. 22-27) interested in taking the lens? While I have someone who will pay for shipping, I’d just as soon not ship it.

DFA 100 Macro WR Asking Price
0.00 USD Item Location
Phoenix, AZ (United States) Item Description
This lens has slow aperture blades. Rather than send it in for repair, I bought a new DFA 100 AW.
Other than the sticky aperture blades, the lens is in reasonably good condition for a well-used lens. Comes with a generic front cap, OEM back cap and hood.
Free. I don't think it's worth the cost to ship it anywhere, so I'll give it to someone who wants to meet me - either in Phoenix next week or Las Vegas from Dec. 22 - 27th, then I'll be back in Arizona (Phoenix until about January 7th, then somewhere around Quartzsite for most of the month). Looks like a nice upgrade. I thought I had signed up to be notified about both the black and the silver on both Ricoh and B&H but haven’t received an email - I could have opted for the black only though. And I still can’t order one until I get back somewhere around the 1st or 2nd (sigh).
Has anyone else received theirs yet?

There’s no way I could wrap that box and put it under the tree, I’d just consider it an early present and go out shooting with it. I would have pre-ordered it but I’m leaving Sunday for 10 days and won’t have an address. Would have loved to have it for this trip, but oh well…

Interesting to read about this lens - my 100 mm macro lens seems to have aperture blades that are somewhat sticky (haven’t been shooting macro in a long time, it seems), so I’ve been thinking about either getting it repaired or replacing it. Now it looks like replacing it might be the right choice. I didn’t see where it was available for pre-order at either B&H or Adorama, and the US Ricoh site said they will email when available for pre-order. I’m now really interested in this lens. Any ideas when it will be available in the US? I’m mobile so don’t always have a shipping address.

A month or two ago I asked to be notified when B&H had the Pentax batteries in stock and received an update email saying they were discontinued. I figure they have no idea when they will get more stock. I ended up ordering a couple of generic batteries from Amazon (DSTE brand) a couple of days ago. So far the pair accepted a charge (I’ve had generic batteries that do not) and don’t immediately say they are out of power. I’ll spend some time playing around with one today to see if they will hold a charge reasonably well.
These are replacing two Wasabi batteries that would no longer hold a charge. My original Pentax battery is from a K-S1 (probably over 7 years old) and still holds a charge well. My experience with non-Pentax batteries have been hit-or-miss, some working well and others not so well.

I originally bought a KP back in 2018 to be a backup to my K1. I was heading to Alaska and was trying to talk myself into a second K1 as a backup and the 150-450 (a lens I was pretty sure would be too heavy and awkward for me) for wildlife and buying the KP and DA 1.4 TC to go with the DA300 was a cheaper and better ergonomic option. My original backup camera was a K-S1 that I loved but which developed aperture block, so I had the smaller batteries anyway, so the fact that it uses different batteries made no difference to me.
During that trip I found myself using the KP as my walk-about lens because it’s size and weight were easier for me to manage. Over 3 years have gone by and the KP is really my primary camera, with the K1 as a back-up. I very much appreciate the light weight and smaller size - it fits me better. The K3III didn’t appeal to me because of the extra weight and size.
So the KP/K1 is an excellent combination for me.

It’s interesting to me to read the comments about the ergonomics for the KP. I had loved my K-S1 (aperture block problem) and so was delighted that Pentax had come out with another smallish, light-weight camera. I sure hope that Pentax comes out with a replacement, but NOT with the ergonomics of a K3 series camera. If I were to want something that size and weight, I would buy a K3III.
I’ll keep my current KP for as long as it lasts (it’s fairly new, I bought a replacement when my first one broke) and hope that there’s a KP-like camera available when it finally fails.

I use the GPS on the K1 all the time - I like having the shots geotagged when I hike. I’ve played around with astrotracer feature a bit, thought it was great, but haven’t really used it enough. One of these days I will spend some time with it.
I still own an O-GPS but haven’t used it in a long time. I found it added more weight and changed the balance of the camera enough that I prefer hiking without it. I really wish the KP had it built in because I use it more when I’m out on a hike, preferring it’s small size and weight over the K1.
While there are things I would like on the K3III, the lack of a built-in GPS was high on the list of why I didn’t buy it.

I’m looking forward to your review. I haven’t ordered the lens, and I’m not entering the raffle for it. I don’t really need something like this but I’m tempted. If it looks completely awesome I may get it anyway…

It’s not getting boring, I’m enjoying your photos. I can feel your delight with it and wish I were in the same situation. It’s always great fun to have a new lens that becomes your best friend right away.
You are also making it more difficult to resist buying a bright and shiny new thing that I really don’t need - it would fill a hole but not one that is bothering me.

I've been very uninspired as far as taking photos, but I was recently treated to an outstanding sunrise when I overnighted at one of my favorite places in Arizona. Both taken with the DA 16-85. |

I did the same thing, had to work at keeping my left hand strictly on the camera. The focus ring is fairly big and I had trouble reaching past it to the zoom ring. I couldn’t operate it with the fingers of my left hand, if the left hand was only on the camera (my fingers are short) and supporting the camera. I started using my right hand to operate the zoom rather than hold the camera and lens completely with the grip and move my left hand off the camera to operate the zoom. It just seemed more comfortable for me for some reason. And I’m less likely to get a “death grip” on the camera which usually introduces extra camera shake.
Others probably won’t find it as awkward as I do, and that’s why I call it quirky rather than lousy.

Interesting thread, indeed. I never thought about a tripod plate on a camera affecting focus adjustment like that. Since I hate plates that rotate, I have a RRS L-bracket for the K1 and a 3-legged thing generic L-bracket for the KP, sure wish I had a custom L-bracket for the KP but the 3-Legged Thing one works reasonably well.
I bought one of these lenses when it came out and mine needed focus adjustment with both the KP and the K1. I think it ended up being a +7 for both cameras, perhaps slightly different on one of them, and it’s one of the few lenses I have that have needed adjustment. Once I got it set up, I found myself using it a lot, though the ergonomics are awkward and it took some getting used to. But once I got used to it, I found myself forgetting about its quirks and enjoying just using it.
Not sure everyone would find it as quirky as I do, or have any issue with it’s weight and size. It’s a lot smaller lighter than the 70-200 f2.8, but it’s not a small Limited lens by any means.

It's nice to have options for charging, especially if you are off-grid.
I recently bought one of the rapid charger kits. Today I experimented with charging a battery using my RV's 12v USB ports. It was slow, probably 6 hours or longer, but it worked. I don't know enough about all this electrical stuff to know if it would be quicker if I were using the USB-C charging port on either a computer or a docking station I use compared to the USB port.
So far I'm happy with it, it seems to work well both on USB (slow) and AC adaptor (quick). The battery was definitely warm to the touch when I used the adaptor.

These shots were hand-held, I was on a short morning hike and these were just things that caught my eye. I’m probably an exception, I’m not very big and have small hands so I found the grip too big and it added too much weight for me, especially with a larger battery in it. I got it with the camera, tried it because I was curious but don’t use it. I would guess the vast majority of people feel the opposite of me though.
I have a good tripod (and do use it occasionally) but don’t hike with it.
I used to own a K-S1. I found I could use my left hand under the lens/camera body to support the camera, then leave a light right hand grip to operate the controls. It seems to work well for me, but the shutter speeds I was using for these photos is about the minimum I can manage (1/400 for the most part) and it’s not for-sure speed to avoid camera shake. I normally use TAv mode and set a faster shutter speed, only I didn’t think about it today.
The funny thing is that I haven’t used the DA*300 in quite a while - several months ago I bought a new lens so have been using it mostly, up until last month when I was helping someone move. The new lens is heavier than the 300 and I guess it and all those heavy boxes were good for my muscles, I didn’t have much trouble shooting today.
