Wow, thanks for the info, guys! :)
I checked the Custom settings, and like you said it was set to the default auto-balance (1) so I switched it to stay constant. Hopefully that will fix the problem.
Not a big deal in everyday shooting, and normally the auto-balance is excellent, but I have to sometimes do shots for work where color consistency is extremely important and my employers don't like me "wasting time" color correcting photos.

Shooting my first set of product images using the K7 today, I noticed that the K7's color balance seems pretty atrocious.
All these shots are with the same flash setup, the same camera settings, and the same white balance setting (default flash) but as you can see the white backdrop looks dramatically different in some of them.
What gives?
SETTINGS:
aperture: ƒ22
speed: 1/125
exposure bias -2.0ev (oops, forgot to change this from the last shooting I was doing)
ISO 100
Using the kit lens right now.
Flash setup is a Calumet Travelite 1500Ws 2-Head Radio Enabled Kit

I'm thinking about it too...
But I think I need to wait a little while since the wife is already mad that I spent so much on my K7 :o

Well, I never noticed any high pitched squeeks on my K10D.
Maybe the K20D had them, but in all the years I had it the K10D never made a noise like that.

Just got a K7 yesterday, and I'm noticing the same sounds too.
2 distinct sounds.
First a louder and more mechanical sound that sounds like a normal startup noise, and then a sudden burst of squeeks (SQUEEKsqueekSQUEEK).
Since everyone else is having the same issue, I assume it's normal, but the squeeking is very off-putting the first time you hear it. It's a high enough pitch that it sounds almost like glass scraping on glass or something. Definitely worried me quite a bit the first time I heard it.

This.
I can't understand how anyone could read a spec. sheet and think the cameras are anywhere near equal at the low-ISO range.
Not to mention that the Kx isn't weather sealed, doesn't have a flash sync socket, doesn't have a metal inner body, and doesn't even have a top LCD screen.

I have a Bushnell 200mm ƒ2.8 that performs pretty similarly... I wonder if they were both rebadges from the same manufacturer?
The Bushnell was made in Japan. Where was your Sears made?

Based on your attached images it looks like your camera is front-focusing when using your kit lens. If you look at her sweater, the texture of the sweater that is somewhat closer to the camera than her face looks nice and sharp, but her face is slightly out of focus.
I suggest sending the camera & lens back to Pentax and requesting that they be calibrated.

Why limit yourself to a $200 lens for the Pentax when you're thinking about getting VR lenses for the Nikon?
I think you'll find that decent Nikon lenses with VR will cost a lot more than you think.

My wife has recently gotten interested in taking photographs of food for when she reviews restaurants on Yelp.com, and I'm wondering what lenses you guys would suggest for food photography.
I assume that a prime would be better than a zoom since fancy food photos always have a lot of bokeh...
I have the FA 31mm Limited, but that's kind of my "baby" and I don't really want her borrowing it for extended periods. :p
Are there any other lenses you guys would suggest?
Maybe the 70mm DA Limited? Or just the 50mm FA 1.4?
Thanks in advance! :)

Wow, beautiful straps!
How much were they each?
Perhaps some of us could go in on a bunch if they are not too expensive...
I love the way the tan ones look. Very "retro" like the straps my dad had for his old Minolta SLR.

Which Pentax wrist strap are you using?
I am planning on buying a K7 this weekend and would like to get a nice wrist strap to go with it.

You shouldn't be comparing prime lenses with the kit lens.
I think the biggest problem is that the kit lens is pretty soft compared to most prime lenses.
I used to complain about how all the images from my K10D were soft, and then I bought my first prime and HOO BOY was there a big difference!
EDIT: Also it looks like the white balance on your camera may be a bit off. You should probably play around with the color, sharpness, and saturation settings until you get something you like.

Can anyone suggest a good brand of wrist strap?
Preferably one that cinches fairly tight around the wrist.
I used to wrap the neck strap around my wrist, but I've had a few too many close calls that way...

Grip Type 2 seems pretty solid. Very, very close to the original.
And at a savings of over 50% off the list price for the official grip, it seems like an excellent deal.
$100 less I spend on the grip is $100 more I can spend on new lenses.

Nice, I love the food shots!
What lens do you find works best for food? The 40mm?
I have the 31mm and love it, but the size and weight of the 40mm make it so attractive... I'm still debating the purchase.

Impressive photos!
I've been thinking about branching out into real estate photography lately (nothing this high-end, mostly condos & apartments) and this seems like it would come in really handy.
This is the kind of HDR that's actually useful, instead of that overdone crap everyone is always posting on Flickr.

Don't forget the flash sync port on the K7.
I have a set of pretty nice studio flashes at my office that I've never been able to use with my K10D because it lacks a standard flash sync port.
When I finally get a K7 I'll be pretty excited about using it with that flash set.

Why do you say that the K7 has worse detail resolution than the K20D?

Hey Jason,
The Pentax rebate is a $100 prepaid Visa card that you can use on anything.

True, but that is body only. We were talking about the kit.
The kit is actually cheaper than the body only, after the $100 rebate.

Same price at Amazon right now.
I have a question about the rebate, does it have to be MAILED by January 15, or does the camera just have to be bought by January 15?
