Cosplay Music Video - AWA 2014

Here's a Music video I've done during the Anime Weekend Atlanta 2014 convention in Atlanta in September.
I used a Pentax K-01 with a manual prime lens 50mm f1.4 and a fish eye Rokinon 8mm f3.5.

Also here's a small issue I have with the K-01.
I'm a bit disappointed that the K-01 doesn't give you full manual control on video when you use a manual lens. It gives you the option to select the M (manual) mode for video when it is actually not. Changing the iso and shutter speed actually does nothing on the K-01.

my poor kx

I'm Ghia and here is my kx’s story. I got my kx as my first DSLR camera from my grandmother when I was 23 in 2010; my Mom is a big fan of it. She has been using only for all her life and recommended it to me. I have been using it and I really like it. But then everything changed, in March this year I went to the Gold Coast with my friends and we were taking photo on the beach with tripod; suddenly, a big wave came and knocked the tripod and my kx down to the seawater. At that moment my friend was taking me a picture; so he unintentionally let go off the tripod to protect himself from the wave and it then killed my loved kx. I didn’t blame him because it was an accident and I know him; he is one of my best friends. He offered me money but I couldn’t take it. I sent my kx to the Pentax and they said that it will cost $1000 to fix it which is not worth it. My grandmother paid around 900 for it. I decided not fix it at this time because there are many better new models but I still want to get it fixed and make it become alive again because it was the last gift from my grandmother before she passed away last year.

I'm doing a part-time job at the moment to buy a new k3 and also looking for a new portrait lens since my old Pentax SMC 55mm F1.8 broke too.

It will be wonderful for me If I can get this 50mm I can save money to buy something else like a grip or other lens.

Thank you

Rest in Peace my 55mm f1.8

Full frame vs 1.5x Crop question at same distance

This is the kind of thing a lot of people should look at before they get a camera. There are people on the site who should probably be FF shooters, but long story short, this is not the kind of question you should be asking. The goal of APS-c is not to mimic FF. If you want an FF camera, get an FF camera, you can do 90% of what FF does on APS-c, but for many photographers 90% of their work is within that 10%, so it really doesn't matter what APS-c can do, if it can't do what they want.

I would retract that statement myself unless you're going to post some example images. Unless you're talking about huge number of pixels on a very small sensor where the lens is out resolved by the sensor. On APS-c and FF sensors lenses are a long way from being out-resolved by sensor density, and the statement is completely false. Comparing APS-c and FF , every increase in sensor density has led to an increase in resolution, and every increase in resolution has lead to an increase in apparent sharpness, maybe not the pixel level. But if you take a D800 image and reduce it to K-3 size or D600 size, it will appear to be sharper. I know I argued with Jay on this point, did my test myself, and discovered Jay was right. You have to reduce a D800 image and K-5 image to less than 3800 pixels wide before they start to look similar. If you take a K-3 image and reduce it to K-5 size, it will still appear to be sharper. Many of us have done tests on images to see how this works.... so given that you could be talking about a very small sensor with very high pixel density, you might be right.. the statement is at best very misleading. Especially discussing APS-c and FF, where a D600 image is only marginally better than a D7100 or K-3 image if you aren't talking about control of DoF or noise. Talking APS-c and FF I think we can definitely say MP is the most important factor in the ability to create apparent sharpness.

Full Frame Not Practical in the Long Run?

Before I pre-ordered my K-3, I stopped in at the local camera store handled a D600, checked lout the specs and tests on both the 6D and D600, and came to the conclusion that even though I could get refurb D600's and 6Ds for the same money, I was better off with a K-3, The 6D can't match the K-3 in absolute resolution, and the D600 is only marginally better. And the fast 85 on the D600 while impressive, was not a better performer than my K-3.

Here's the thing I would really like from FF advocates, stop focussing on FF taking away APS-c users. That is not going to happen. One of my friends bought a D3200 and 18-250 for less than $700. There an FF would have to have a 24 to 400 on it to match the FoV. Not going to happen, never going to match the price.

You can speculate about high end users, but I've actually done the research and the math. I doubt that the 6D has converted more than a couple high end APS-c shooters. The value just isn't there.

There's a guy on the forum who has figured out exactly the parameters that would make FF attractive to a budget conscious user. Cheap body (6D or D600) Cheap fast lenses, usually second hand, lenses less than 60mm.

Most people who have invested in FF systems, many have kept their APS-c stuff. Many shoot a lot less FF than APS-c. Based on the experience of forum users, my guess is you should plan on keeping both systems, there have been some rather heart breaking posts from new FF users who didn't understand what they were losing when they sold their high end APS-c gear to purchase an FF system. Once it's gone, you'll know though.

As far as i can tell, there are two types of FF users, pros, who want a more distinctive look and are willing to pay the big bucks to get it as well as the little bit of extra low light performance, and people with lot's of money, who just want to believe they have the best, and who don't seem to realize, there is no "best", all their is is "best for what I'm doing right now", and that in going from APS-c to FF you're giving up "best in one situation" for best in "something else". (And one guy who says it's cheaper.)

When I see threads like this I truly expect to see discussions of FF's DoF and versatility, for possible use as a one format system for a specific type of shooter. Instead it's the same old speculation over and over again, with the success of FF depending on the demise of APS-c etc. all of which is nonsense.

When talking about the possibility of increasing FF sales, the big questions is, are there going to be more shooters who appreciate the technical merits of what FF has to offer, and don't care about what APS-c has to offer. My question for you would be "why would that happen?"

Or to be more precise "Why would there be an aesthetic shift in the population favouring that style of image that FF excels at." Don't be asumming that everybody wants it. Most people don't, except maybe for their wedding pictures.

Most of the stuff posted in this forum on this topic is marketing hype, designed to convince people they need something they don't, and suggesting they give up features they've come to rely on, to get it.

The Pentax look

For the pentax look, I'd say DA 15 ltd. DA 21 Ltd. FA 31 ltd, FA 43 Ltd and FA 77 ltd. I really like my 18-135, but it's the 21 that gives me the look. For the Pentax look you pretty much need something designed before Hoya took over. Lenses like the DA 35, DA 50, DA 70 even my DA*60-250, they are very good lenses, but I don't think they have "the look". IN fact I think they're the kinds of lenses that could have been made by anyone.

If I were looking exclusively for "the look" I'd start with the 3 FA ltds.

But then, I don't own many lenses that actually have the look.. so I should shut up now....

Adam, you and I are on such totally different pages here.... we might be confusing the guy. :D

There are many other uses for the stars besides rating. For example, 1 star could mean images that all need a batch white balance adjustment, 2 could be images that need to go into PS for some cloning work, 3 could be images intended for final printing, etc. Possibilites are endless.

Good golly, Ms. Molly!

Full frame, full frame, full frame... what is the obsession with full frame? I mean, is it really a game of "mine's bigger than yours"?? Does your finger fidget on the shutter release button because you have a strange echoey voice in your head saying, "It's not ffffuuuuulllll ffffrrraaaaammmmeeee!" Do you run out of the bathroom screaming in horror when you realize that your Pentax DSLR is not full frame? I think to the great photographers of the 20th century with their grainy black and white film and old fashioned non-coated lenses. What would they think of our DSLRs today? What would they create?

I imagine these FF fetishists laying on the ground, curled up in a fetal position, sweat beads on their foreheads. They mumble softly to themselves, "full frame.. .. .. full .. .. frame". The words are lost to the winds that blow in through the shutters and to the sound of drips coming from the leaky faucet nearby.

Obviously, Pentax/Ricoh is not going to make a FF just for the symbolism of it and they aren't going to make something they can't sell for a profit. They also won't make something for the 100-200 PF members who would buy one no matter how much money it would cost. It's the reality we all live in as of now. Could it change? Sure! Honestly, if you want FF for the sake of whatever FF means to you then go buy it. What's stopping you? Is it me? Is it your neighbor across the street? No, it must be their potted cactus stopping you. Yes, that's it. Ricoh and Pentax are doomed and this entire forum, all the members, and every post here since 2006 has been rendered obsolete, useless, and meaningless. I think I'll go swallow a light bulb. Maybe that will make the world right! No, I ought to swallow that cactus. Yes... yes.. yes...

Oh wow, that was fun! I have to type nonsense like that more often! Haha! Please, provoke me!

APS is a great format. Really, it is. Snap up some FF lenses let the sensor crop out the soft corners while keeping the sharp center.

'Tis but thy name that is my enemy;
Thou art thyself, though not a Ricoh.
What's Ricoh? it is nor lens, nor shutter,
Nor prism, nor body, nor any other part
Belonging to a camera. O, be some other name!
What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So K-3 would, were it not K-3 call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which it owes
Without that title. K-3, doff thy name,
And for that name which is no part of thee
Take all myself.

IF and this is a BIG IF you find that you would normally shoot your 24mm at F2 A LOT, or 31 at 1.8 A LOT, then you would have already bought a 5D or D700 and 24 1.4, or 35 1.4 and go your merry way.

But, to say that the APS-C cameras are not good (and I'm not saying your saying that) because they can't do 24mm 2.0, is a big jump. FF cameras can't reach to 300mm with a 200mm, so are they "handicapped?" Or 600mm with a 400mm etc... As the Bristish would say "horses for courses..." :)

Pentax D-BG2 Grip Repair

Ok, here goes:

To keep things straight, I kept the screws, etc. removed from each step seperate so I knew what went with what and so they wouldn't end up lost since everything is quite small. I used a coaster, but any small container would work.

Step 1.
Remove the 11 screws holding the top plate, and remove the top plate.

Note the four o-rings. They may or may not stay in place, so be careful not to lose them. You can try to remove them, but if they don't come easily, I'd suggest leaving them be so that you don't damage them.

Step 2.
Flip the grip over and remove the 8 bottom screws. The two outer pieces will now slide apart from the guts.

Step 3.
Remove the 5 screws holding the silver plate in place, and then remove the plate.

Step 4.
Remove these 6 screws. Now this is where you want to be careful, as everything is now being held together by soldered wire connections. If you yank them, you had better be able to use a soldering iron.

Gently lift the upper assembly and remove the grip attachment screw.

Step 5.
The orange wire trace here is just stuck on with adhesive. It can be pulled free from the lower assembly and give you a little more play between the upper and lower assemblies still connected by the soldered wires.

Step 6.
Now you have a choice of how to proceed. If you can access them easily enough, you can remove the screws holding the electrical contacts in place. This will allow you a bit more freedom for handling pieces in the following steps with out fear of breaking the connections. But you do not have to do this. Everything else can still be done with them connected. I've done this without removing them twice in the past (the second time requiring use of a soldering iron DOH!), but this time I'm removing them. Choose whichever you are most comfortable with. *EDIT* Reattaching the contacts on reassembly was not easy. Was a real bear trying to hold everything in position while getting the screw in place. Not sure that I'd go that route in the future.

If you remove them, there is a small piece under the contact with the black wire which isolates it from the connector the grey wire is attached to. Don't lose it.

Also, these two pins will fall out if you on you if you just flip the piece over, so be sure to catch them.

Step 7.
Removing these two screws will give you access to the wire trace that covers the springs.

Again, there are two pins the will pop out, so be sure to catch them.

Step 9.
The cover over the springs is held in place by adhesive. Care needs to be taken not to bend or break it. Also, the springs may launch when removing it. I'm not going any further with mine, as it is currently fine and don't want to press my luck, but once you have access to the springs, you may need to bend them back into shape. Once you have the springs and/or pins straightened, and you are replacing the wire trace cover, the adhesive probably won't have enough strength to keep things in place completely (and is most likely the original cause of the springs becoming dislodged in the first place). I used some of the sticky adhesive found in office supply stores to keep things in place. So far, it's worked, but if you have any alternative ideas I'm open to them. All that's left is to put everything back together.

As an aside, one other little issue I had with the grip was that the OFF/ON/Preview switch was very stiff and would stick from time to time. To fix this, I slightly loosened the 3 screws from inside that hold it in place following Step 2. If you loosen it too much, there is a small BB that will fall out. This BB keeps the switch locked it in the ON and OFF positions. A slight bit of dielectric grease may also work here, but I didn't have any handy. Sorry, no pics of this, as my batteries died.

I assume so, cause the cable from Gadget Infinity is really nothing more than a male to male 3.5 to 2.5 adapter. The pin layout is the same in both ends. — I just double-checked with a multimeter.

The first one might be a bit short though. Personally I'd go for the last / most expensive one with a 90 degree bend in one end. That's practical, especially at the camera end.
