I will try that next time. From what you descibed I assume that it will end up take some time to render the previews during import. Photo Mechanic seems to not need that time at all, everything is instant, but it's great to know!
"Standard" might be better option for initial previewing I suspect. Do you know if there is a command to "build 1:1 previews" on selected photos only after everything is imported?
Probably what cxdoo said above, Lightroom may take a bit longer to build 1:1 previews on bigger files. Once it's loaded I find 24mp not that much different from 12mp though.

DA 40 is most definitely sharper than the kitlens at all apertures. I'd say at f/4 it will beat anything the kit lens can produce. Try adjusting the focus as someone said above.

I know this might not help the OP but it's worth mentioning in this thread since we're discussing lightroom. Since I started processing 24mp images, Lightroom library mode have really slowed to the point of being hard to use. For the initial sorting I now use Photomechanic, it's lightning fast compared to Lightroom for this purpose. I color tag them in Photomechanic and reimport in Lightroom, and it retains the color tag. I separate the photos into separate folder then work on them. Much faster than doing the sorting in Lightroom.

I second what Optofonik said, re-cataloging and relearning a software is a pain. Just go with LR, and treat it like an entry level software. Dont have to use all the buttons as a starter

Not sure if the price is real, but Canon isn't always expensive, just sometimes.

Canon has been churning out really interesting lens designs lately. For all the bashing they got due to outdated cameras seems like there's nothing left to be desired in the lens department.

I think simplicity is good :) I'd say go for it and buy one K-3, if you dont need a second body. Personally I'd buy the K-3 before selling the last camera, just in case.
I forgot to mention, if you ever see yourself in the future de-SDM ing DA 16-50 or DA 50-135, I believe it's only available for K10 and K100 (IIRC, should check the SDM disabling thread). You can pick up a K100D for a song these days though, so probably not an issue and you can just buy one when the issue comes up

Isn't K20D still worth more in the marketplace? When I was in your position I decided to sell off the K20D and K-x, kept the K10D because my K10 has around 50k shutter, the resale value is ridiculously low. (My K20 had around 15k and K-x had around 20k). I also like the results from ISO100 K10D, I dont think even the newest sensors are capable of the same color rendering.
If the resale value of my K10D had been equal to my K20D, I might have kept the K20D instead though, it's a more versatile body.
Talking about old items getting upgrades, I still dream of the day I can tell Nokia to produce an updated version of Nokia 3310 for my personal use :) https://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=...77161500,d.cWc |

I think shopping for gear / gear acquisition is kind of a subset of photography though :D It really shouldnot take as long as it usually does... but it's more fun than it really should be, but I guess it's like programmers obsessing over computer specs?

You're right but bear in mind that FF usually have one stop high iso advantage, so it evens out. If you're buying 18-35mm/1.8 because you want the lowlight capability and dont need APSC advantages, consider FF since 28-75/2.8 can be had for $250 used, and it's lighter!
I keep thinking to buy the 18-35 (to run dual body with D600/85mm) but I remind myself that I might as well save up a bit longer and buy another D600.

I'd get a yongnuo 560 before I get those, but that's just me. I had the Metz and while it fires fine it's not very practical to use (for me). FWIW I didnt bother checking if the voltage is safe, so I used Wein Safesync to trigger it.

It's to force myself to slow down and think about the image more carefully. The lens doesnt AF and usually it's a prime, so I really think about everything that I usually forget. It's good exercise, and I think it actually helps my photography :)

This is like asking how to quit drinking in a wine enthusiast forum :p
For me if I dont love OR use a lens, I sell it. There are lenses that I love that I use only a few times a year. I keep them. (Tak 35/2, Jupiter-9, Sigma 4.5mm)

I thought we were discussing DOF on different formats. My original point that you quoted was that a 18-50/2 zoom doesnt exist for APSC. So FF is the only format where I can shoot a zoom lens with that kind of DOF control.
If you agree that 75/2.8 on FF is equal to 50/2 on APSC dof wise, there's no contention between us :)

I tested this myself, shooting 75mm/2.8 on FF yields a virtually identical image (DOF wise) to 50/2 on APSC. I'd assume the rest of the focal range is the same as well. Had both cameras side by side and I didnt change my distance (its a half body portrait). I dont think I bothered to make the ISO / shutterspeed the same, was only concerned with DOF when I did the tryout. I can post the images later if you want :)
I can do it with D600/D7000, I'm pretty sure the exposure values between the two will be the same though... I use both cameras side by side alot so I'm pretty sure I'd notice if they report different exposure values :D
Some photographers (me included) thinks less DOF is a real benefit (I can use a zoom on FF to do the job of a prime on APSC!) although I understand it's not for everyone :)

Haven't had time to watch the video yet (at work now), but what I get from your post is that the ISO of crop cameras generally reported lower than it actually is, in order to produce a brighter image? Even if this is true, in practical means it just means the APSC sensor has a work harder to match the FF sensor. That actually makes the comparison easier, rather than if they were honest with it. Imagine if your table is true, and ISO 100 in FF doesnt produce the same brightness as ISO 100 in APSC? Would be so chaotic trying to compare then. Unintended benefit :p
If 70-200/2.8, ISO 100 on FF and 50-135/2.8 ISO 100 on APSC = same shutter speed, then I'd say they have equal light gathering capability for practical purposes |

Only that fuji has outpentaxed pentax in that department (creative lens designs) in recent days :/ I think the last exciting one we got was DA 15. But I think pentax is on a good streak at the moment, and it can only get better :) I have hope.
Yeah I agree with that on DA 50-135. I don't think Pentax ever claimed that it's equivalent to 70-200/2.8 in DOF though, only that it's FOV equivalent to a 70-200. Also, for $1300 in FF you can only buy a f/4 version with SR, so it's not like the price is not competitive. I think it's a missed opportunity though because body SR is supposed to make the price of lenses cheaper!
If you decide to forgo SR you have more options though: (Tamron 70-200, Sigma 70-200, Nikon 70-200/2.8 v1/v2) for $700-800!! You can also pay some more dough and get 70-200/2.8 with SR :) Options are good
