I've been shooting JPG a lot more recently as well with the DS, but I think it just has to do with me getting better at exposing correctly in the camera first of all. Plus I like to have an understanding of the tool, the camera, at the time of taking the picture. It's nice to have RAW though, as you get a sense that for making large prints you can retain as much data as possible. Silkypix also gives me some cool color and white balance options which in a way is like shooting with a different type of film. The adjustable "fujichrome velvia" in the DS is great for many kinds of pictures, but it's nice to have options.

If you want a wide angle lens you should not really rely on the kit 18-55. It's not a wide angle lens, it's a normal street zoom. The 16-45 is much better, but also bigger and has ED glass. If you KNOW that you want that kind of lens, then it's a very good choice. There's no such thing as a good $60 telephoto zoom unless you get it used. Check out e-bay, and don't be in such a hurry. I would stay away from any FA-J lenses if possible.

I think only P-TTL, or manual. Not older TTL.

I really like the third picture with the rooftop of the house poking through the color.

Thank you Clarence!
I thought about it before, and I like something about the tree as well as the clouds, so I didn't want to crop the tree out. I think it's that part towards the bottom third where it gets thin, it looks like a reflection in a body of water, but it's the way the tree has grown. Anyway, how's this? I cropped mostly from the upper left here. I think that putting the garbage pot further to the left makes it seem further from the tree and gives a bit more sense of depth which is then mirrored by the clouds in the sky. I don't know, these forums have changed me for the worse, and I just talk trash all the time now. |

Great shots! Number one is so captivating. I'd like to see more with the 30 year old lens as well.

This was along Hollywood beach one evening last week. It's just about 20 minutes North of Miami, and actually that little pot on the left is used for garbage, not gold.
This is an ISO 800 jpg pretty much (a touch of cloning brush) straight from the DS and F-28-80@35mm, f/11.
Suggestions and critique always appreciated.

It looks great as it is to me, but out of curiosity how would it look with everything in black and white except the painted face on the canvas?

Very nice! The portrait is of the painter and the painting, and the environment. The girl is what gives the portrait light. This is like the chicken and the egg, I'm still trying to figure out who took this picture... :D

The beef to me I guess is that reviewers really shouldn't let their own preferences and priorities play a role in a review. Ethically, I don't think any serious reviewer should say "recommended" or "highly recommended" etc... at the end, as a concluding wrap-up statement. Those feelings are from overal personal opinion, and we know from photography more than any other art form that such things are almost totally subjective.
Allright, who cares if a couple of esteemed reviewers don't like Pentax? Well, what matters is that they don't "hate" Pentax, because one would like to think that opinions such as these should hold some value, and they do. The internet isn't free, though it seems like it. I personally value everybody's opinion in some shape or form, because I know that the world is not all in black and white. The nice thing is that we have options, and colors. :D

Nice critters, I mean photos!
My favorite is number 3. I'm not sure why, I guess it's the kind of photo I'd look for personally, but the last one of the squirrel is awesome. I can see why you'd just want to sit and wait for the light to vanish.

Asad,
You're in for a treat. The quality of this lens surprises me every time. It's small and doesn't seem to be particularly sturdy or anything, but wow! Here's one sample I took just before Christmas of my wifes cell phone with the DFA 50/2.8 and even a cheap UV filter on it. This is a 4 mp *** JPG straight out of the DS resized and no sharpening applied. Keep it clean,
50mm, f/5.6

I think you're going to start sharing some outstanding images and experiences. Here's something to add to your kit. Get a LensPen! I just got one, and it works really well. It goes everywhere my DS goes now, and I don't worry about dust or smudges on the lens. A UV filter comes in handy too at times.
Anyway, Pentax offers mostly outstanding lenses, and some very well thought out cameras with useful and innovative features. The DA 18-55 (kit lens) is the current cheapest offering, but it's still very good. I find it has been extreemely helpful in teaching me the pros and cons of zoom lenses, and keep in mind that even the most "advanced" photographers will make great use of this lens or anything else for that matter. I think you're going to really enjoy the experience, but beware of LBA. Don't just start buying lenses, learn as much about them as you can all the time. The internet is a great resource!
I think if I had gone the Canon or Nikon route I would have just bought what was available and "affordable" without knowing anything about it, and then I'd probably have felt a little bit jibbed after learning more. ;) That's just me though.

I guess I just shoot RAW when I want the final image to be more my own interpretation of an image, and so I can process it much more. Otherwise, setting up the camera and shooting JPG is a great way to learn and just enjoy more of what the camera is capable of doing for you.
For different lenses you might want to use different in camera settings. I personally like turning up the DS contrast with a little more sharpening and a little less satturation, but pictures turn out according to lighting situations more than anything.

Thanks for looking guys, I think they're kind of 'post cardy' myself, but I'm happy to have gotten them anyway. I've got more, and not just of the glass, but don't have time at the moment to even look at them. I'm very happy with the camera and lens, and I don't see outgrowing them ever. Hey, it's all about having fun anyway. :D

Thank you Tom,
I like number 5 too as a photo in itself, and that "turkey vulture" in the last one was a good touch, though it was probably due more to luck than anything else. I saw it in the viewfinder, but I waited a second or two before pressing the shutter release. I'll probably spend more time eventually on individual photos when I preparing to print a few.
