Great photo! I love taking sunset shots near water.
Photography is an art and everyone has different tastes and styles.
Here is what I see if I was right where you were for this shot.
I would put the camera lower to the ground to get more rocks bigger in the foreground. Since the clouds loose their color the closer they get to me I would have had the horizon along the top of the frame. Now if the color of the clouds were more I would have had more sky in my frame. Anyway, this isn't a critique per se, but more of a different point of view. Here are a couple sunset shots I took that shows my point of view and feel free to critique them as well!
Happy shooting!!
(the second photo was taken with my old Nikon D90)

We were skiing uphill after dark and it was snowing heavily. I wanted to get this shot but didn't want to impede progress by setting up a tripod and also I didn't want the "long exposure" look.
This was tough, Manual focus, ISO 6400, f/5.6, shutter 1/50.
How do you guys feel about shooting pitch black?
Also, this was edited with Lightroom. What sliders should I ignore and which ones should I focus on?

My wife and I were camping in East Glacier and one of our neighbors stopped by to enjoy our fire with us. His story was very interesting. The next morning I asked to take his portrait.

I have never had a problem with my K3. And if I couldn't figure something out, this forum helped tremendously! I would have taken your K3 instead of you throwing it away.

Thanks for sharing! I am about to purchase the Rokinon 10mm that just came out for K mount and this is exactly why I'm getting it. Night photography.
Have you used the 500 rule before? If not, read about it. It's a good thing to know, especially since you have the equipment to get a great image without having the star trails. I would shoot in RAW if I were you, but the first shot looks more natural. And don't be afraid to boost that ISO!! :)

Handheld or Tripod?
2nd and 3rd shot are nice and sharp. I like the colors too.

This was shot handheld. Check Exif data. Should I have used a tripod? I believe on was on a climb and hiking back and so I didn't have my proper tripod with me. All I had was a small one for a summit photo What are your thoughts?

I do love how much information is on PF. What a great community! Although I have been paid for my photography and my family and friends would say I'm as good as any pro, I still just have a hard time considering myself anything above an amateur. Probably because I don't do it as a profession but more as a hobby. I have wanted the new and improved gear for IQ and sometimes sit on PF for hours reading all sorts of reviews. In the end though because I don't need the top of the line gear, I end up getting mid-cost lenses and they are amazing! It's true about it's all how you use it. I had wanted the Pentax 150-450mm when it came out and had planned on purchasing it except for that price tag. I ended up getting the HD 55-300 and don't regret it one bit. Because I have a K3 and don't plan on getting a K1 anytime soon, I knew that I could utilize the 55-300 just great. Plus, because I'm an avid climber/adventurer, the weight was a big factor as well.
Amateurs do worry about the gear but we also are blessed to have such a forum to go to that gives us all sorts of information and reviews so that we can make educated decisions.
Cheers!!

I feel like I have a pretty good portfolio and I want to start trying to sell to Magazines or at least try and get some published. For outdoor/adventure magazines, who do you guys have success with? What magazines are really nice to work with and do you just email the magazine?

Shot this at my sisters wedding. I stood on a 12' ladder in order to get high enough.

This is a hard Theme....for me anyway. Trying to decide what is "simple" and how to define it.
I chose this photo because of it's sentimental value and how simple life was while working at the south pole. The south pole sits on a plateau at 10,000 ft. Not much to do there except work. On our days off we would usually drink or watch a movie or play ping pong. One weekend(we only got one day off a week) me and a couple guys decided to ski 3 miles away from the base and sleep in a snow cave. That proved to be quite difficult since it was -20F and trying to sleep at that temp is very hard. I didn't get much sleep but I'll remember the experience for the rest of my life.

I love the FPS of the K3. It feels like it just goes and goes. I attached an old manual focus 50mm prime and I swear it shot 4 fps for like a 40 secs. It might have been only 30 but it felt like forever. I love it when it shoots 8 fps. Super bomb!
I used the composite mode to do some star trails and that worked awesome! Tell it how many photos to composite and click away. Here's the shot. It was my first time doing it and after doing other milky way shots it was the last thing I did before heading home so I only shot this one composite. Next time I'm doing a night shoot I want to dedicate it to just composites to get better acquainted with the mode.

Here is the BW version. I think I like the BW better now. I actually lessened the Whites and Black a bit.

WOW! Thanks Tonytee! That's really nice of you to say! Much appreciated.
Fg-one: I thought about making it BW. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a shot and see how it turns out. I'll do it later today since I have to go to a hockey coaches clinic right now.
Cheers!

Took a walk in Glacier National Park last weekend and came upon this spot. I'm curious what ya'll think of it? Should I turn it black and white?
I had a hard time deciding whether to post this or some shots I took of Avalanche Gorge. Avalanche Gorge is shot so many times and it takes a lot of thinking to get the shot you want. This was one of those, "oh hey, look at that" snapshots.

5 images. Edited in Photomatix Pro and Lightroom. Maybe I've been staring at this photo to much, but does anyone think that it's crooked just a tad? Or is it that the lines tend to lead to the right?

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I've used Blurb and MyPublisher before and they came out nice. Super simple.

For me its the 2nd. Like Mcgregni said, it does have a more intimate feel. The first one there is too much going on. Too many objects that distract from the chair. And yes, the yellow is a bit strong.
Were you shooting on a tripod? The first one seems a bit blurry. I looked at the EXIF and you were shooting at f/8 ISO 100 1/30s. If you want to keep that aperture, I'd boost the ISO to 400. If you're on a tripod, it doesn't matter.
Cool spot dude!

Did you shoot in RAW? What kind of PP did you do? I'm still learning on how to shoot at night and just learned the 500 rule.

Thanks for the tip! I've actually never heard of the 500 rule. Reading about it now. I've just started to dab in HDR and can see how it can be used in astrophotography. Will be practicing more tonight.

I have a hard time doing long exposures of daytime sky. Too much light comes in and can make the sky really grainy. I use a ND Grad filter to darken the sky and keep the landscape lighter. And I'd shorten the exposure time. What are you trying to achieve with the long exposure? The only time I use long exposure during the day is for moving water shots. And in that case I rarely use a shutter longer than 2 sec. I really like your composition though!

I am curious if you guys think this is a good Milky Way photo? How do other Pentaxians do their "milky way" PP? I rarely touch the sliders in LR because I feel like the photo then looks worse than the original.
