When taking vertical images, most photographers will rotate the camera to the left, holding it up with the right arm/hand above the camera. Rotating the camera to the right, however, allows a photographer to hold his/her arms and elbows in close to the body and thereby steadying the camera. Additionally, changing the position of the right hand to use the thumb to actuate the shutter button insures the grip end of the camera won't be pushed to the side by actuating the shutter. Especially useful in low light.

HOLD THE PRESSES !!! The Pentax Takumar adapter fits inside the K-mount. Duh. I have no idea where I got the idea that there was a second ring that mounted on top of the original K-mount. I am NOT going crazy. I just need my eyes examined.

Um, yes it does, as with the original Pentax adapter (which I didn't know until I mounted the adapter) has a central ring which is removable when clicking a retaining ring. The central ring is an M42 threaded ring. With that ring removed, the adapter is a plain old PK mount ring and one can mount PK lenses to it. My question is, how does the extra thickness of the adapter ring affect the performance of the lens. One respondent has indicated it won't affect infinity focus of K-mount lenses, but what about VIGNETTING?
You might be confused, in that I've mounted the Pentax Takumar adapter to Pentax K to Sony E adapter already on the camera. Sorry for the confusion.

The adapter I bought is the original Pentax branded adapter. It's good to know I won't lose infinity focus (difficult to ascertain unless I go outside, and it's 10 degrees and I don't want to go outside :). BUT WHAT ABOUT VIGNETTING?

Yes, I'm aware of that. But why is there not provision for removing the adapter ring, which was my primary question.......does the extra thickness of the adapter ring change the performance of the K lens mounted on top of it?

The adapter is designed that way.......it's only the central screw mount portion that is removable, leaving a K-mount adapter that mounts K-mount lenses. It's the extra thickness of the adapter upon which K-mount lenses are mounted that is my chief question. I.e., does not the extra thickness change the performance of the K-mount lens?

Hi,
I recently bought a mint SMC Takumar 35/3.5 as a walk-around lens for (excuse me) a used Sony a7 I couldn't resist. The 35/3.5 lives up to its reputation as a super lens! I bought the Pentax version of the Takumar adapter and have now discovered the mount won't come off the PK to Sony E adapter. It appears to be made that way, as the release button won't come out of the adapter ring, although it does allow me to add and remove K mount lenses. Problem is, won't the extra thickness of the screw mount affect the performance of the K mount lenses? Especially as involves vignetting, let alone infinity focus?
Is there a Takumar adapter ring I can buy that will simply allow the adapter ring to be removed along with its Takumar lens?

I have a notion to pick up a Takumar 35/3.5, one of the multicoated Taks if I can. It seems that optically they are the same as the hard-to-find K35/3.5.
Is there a screw mount I can use that would stay on the lens and fit both a K mount on the K-5 and a K mount on a Fotodiox adapter to a Sony a7? Any problems in using this lens and mount on the K-5. Except for manual focus and manual exposure, which I'm an old hand at :).

The 12-24 is certainly a good lens, but if you will be crawling around and want something sharp and small, the DA15 is the item. Don't worry about the bodies you have. Lenses make more difference than bodies. The K200 and/or the K30 are just fine. The DA 15 doesn't flare very easily, especially if stopped down, and it's very small and light. In Bhutan I took the K200 and three lenses: DA15, M28/3.5, DA40, and DA 70 and didn't miss too many photos. I knew I wanted to travel light and knew that in Asia there would be many narrow streets and small museums where I would need a wide angle. Most of the lenses you have are sharp enough, with the possible exception of the 18-135. Take you tripod and use it.....you'll get sharper photos that way than the guys with $2000 super-sharp glass that shoot hand held.
Attached is a photo made in Bhutan with the K200 and DA15.
And have a great time! I'm envious.

Hi,
I recently purchased a Pentax 28mm f/3.5 shift lens and needed to repair some looseness in the shift mechanism. I took care of the looseness with an adjustment to the shift dovetail. However, someone had repaired the lens earlier and replaced the shift ring in the wrong direction, i.e., it read 11mm of shift when the lens was at zero shift. So I rearranged that and noticed the nylon bushings that slide in a "female" cam groove (the groove controls the shift when the ring is turned) on the shift ring were worn. Also, one bushing had been replaced with a slotted screw and was beginning to wear the inside of the cam groove. I took a bit off the screw to prevent it from scoring the top of the cam groove. It will be a machining situation to replace the slotted screw, as the threads in the shift ring were retapped to a larger size than that used for the shouldered screw that mounts the other bushing. That shouldn't be too much of a problem, but first I need to find a pair of bushings. Attached is a photo with dimensions as close as I could measure with calipers or mm ruler.
Note that there is some wear on the bushings and the height is probably more like 5+ mm. There is 1.5mm headspace above the bushing in the cam groove. Also, the cap of the bushing mounting screw fits into a shoulder in the top of the bushing.
Any suggestions for where to find these bushings would be most welcome. Thanks in advance BAB

BEST OFFER. The Pentax K1000, serial no. 6753626, was purchased new in the early '80s with a Pentax SMC M 50mm f/2.0. The Tokina SD 70-210 f/4.0-5.6 was purchased new a few years later. All three were used by my wife for many years, until I bought her a Canon Elph. The equipment has the usual wear from use, but no major damage anywhere. (The camera is a tank -- you'd have to run over it with a truck.) Both lenses work fine and the glass is clean, no scratches or mold. The interior of the camera is like new, the shutter works on all speeds, and the light meter works as well. One battery for the meter included, as is one lens-mount cap and two front lens caps. No box, manual, or strap. BEST OFFER.

I'm in support of this petition. The one remaining private camera store in Portland, Maine doesn't carry Pentax gear as there's too little call for same compared to other brands. So what's the big deal about standardized pricing. Put the prices back where they were and Pentax will sell a hell of lot more of them.

I think the problems with low-light auto focus have been resolved. Early on, I had a friend who went through three K-5s before getting one that would work as well as his old K-10 in low light. But I mean low light -- below EV4. There was, however, a firmware update that helped correct the problem. The vast majority of K-5 owners never had any problems, perhaps because they never shoot in light that low. There were other models of cameras that have had similar problems. I have a suspicion that the rather extraordinary sensors available today just got ahead of the autofocus capabilities and the latter had to be tightened up.
Very much enjoy the quiet shutter. I'm in the process of a documentary, so I'm certain I'm not the only one who will appreciate the quiet shutter.
Just for the hell of it, I took a photo at ISO 12800 last night, in rather dim mixed tungsten/fluorescent light. Here's the result (70mm limited at f/2.4).

DxO rates this sensor at a rather amazing 14 stops of dynamic range at ISO 80. 13 at ISO 200.

I don't blame you. And now I know why you wanted to be able to use the aperture ring -- necessary to use manual lenses. Which I just discovered. I suspect wading through the menus is better than wading through the manual. Although the manual isn't so bad when viewed through the bottom of a wine glass :lol:
