About IBIS - Which company started IBIS in DSLR's ? Curiosity question.

When it comes to DSLRs, this is correct. However, if you're looking at digital cameras in general, Ricoh had IBIS a year before Pentax, with the Caplio R3 small-sensor camera (aka P&S) which was released in September 2005 (the K10D came exactly a year later).

Ricoh files a patent for a Pentax 35-80mm f/4 full frame lens

As far as I know fixed-aperture zoom lenses close down the aperture a bit the wider the focal length is, to maintain the same maximum aperture across the zoom range. Personally I don't see the benefit of this and would much rather get the true maximum aperture at all focal lengths. If instead of f/4.0 it's f/2.5 at the wide end and only f/4.0 at the long end, I'm willing to accept it ;-)

K-1 screen: stupid?

That's exactly what I think. Quote from a dpreview thread:

QuoteQuote:

Having played with the K-1 a couple of weeks ago at B&H I realized that the "spider position" of the LCD, with all 4 legs extended, is actually not very useful and is mostly a by-product of the real reason for this design - the unique support for *vertical* waist level position, where only 2 legs are extended and with the screen still centered behind the lens.

The K-1 LCD screen has a brilliant design, but the fact that people tend to pull out all 4 legs and swivel it a bit from side to side (why?) shows that most don't understand the point behind the design. I think Pentax should explain this better.

Pentax Should Build an EVIL Camera

True.

Not necessarily. Pentax can put the K-mount on a moving platform that collapses half an inch to adopt to new-generation lenses optimized for compact size, and expands for regular K-mount lenses. This way, the "collapsed mode" mount register would be as short as needed when using specially designed "for-EVIL" lenses (as in m43 or NX cameras), and the regular K-mount register will be in maintained when the mount is in "expanded mode". You get the best of both worlds - extreme compactness with suitable lenses and full backwards compatibility with existing lenses, and without the need to use a cumbersome adapter.

Correct, but see above why mount registration distance shouldn't prevent backwards compatibility or compact size. You can have both with the same mount and without an adapter. All you need is the right design.

You might want to try the new "silent" firmware update. There's at least one report of it improving the SR performance, allowing the K-x to deliver on its claimed 4 stops gain.

There are already several camera companies sponsoring the event: Ricoh, Panasonic, Samsung.

Vancouver 2010 Sponsors : Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics

Canon, Nikon, Sony and Olympus aren't on the list, so it may be a good idea for Pentax to join, if it's not too late.

The registration distance won't prevent from pocketing a GXR+Pancake lens in a coat pocket.

Moreover, using a collapsible mechanism could make the registration distance much shorter when the camera is turned off and stored in a pocket. It's been done decades ago, so think what today's technology can do with the same concept :)

New Ricoh Camera is Here!

Maybe you shouldn't, but those who want its unique capabilities would go for it and settle for less than the quickest service. Not that Ricoh seem to care that much about markets other than the Japanese one.

Oh, and by the way, Ricoh's US service is handled by C.R.I.S Camera. Guess what? they're located in Arizona, just a couple of hours drive from where you live ;)

Simple. They can match the lens and the sensor. Use a small-sensor for zoom lenses and maintain pocketability (unlike M43), and use a larger APS-C sensor with lenses that are used in situations where size can be compromised (e.g. tele and macro lenses).

The pictures may be of a mock up, but the camera is very real. See this video:

Which company wound you prefer to buy Pentax:

- Ricoh - user interface to die for
- Fuji - best sensors and processing

I think Fuji is an even better candidate, because they are now missing a DSLR provider to support their unique sensors and processing, and Pentax has everything they need to complement their technology.

What you visited is actually not the review site, but merely an HTML-based intro that has no relation with the Flash-based paid part (which is where 99% of the content at reidreviews.com is).

Trust me, if the entire site had the same layout as the intro, I would have kept my subscription. As it is, all I have left is bad taste.

As a former subscriber to his site I highly recommend that you insist on trying before buying. Sean Reid may be an excellent writer, but the Flash-based layout of his site is probably the worst I've ever encountered:

- Text size can't be changed (it's too small for my eyesight)
- It doesn't support 1024x768 screen resolution (the text doesn't wrap; the site displays a horizontal scrollbar)
- PageUp and PageDown buttons don't work.
- The browser's Back and Forward buttons don't work
- Printing articles for off-line reading is blocked
- The browser's text search option (Ctrl+F) doesn't work
- Selecting the text (to copy it to another viewer) is blocked
- There is no way to save a Favorite/Bookmark to a specific article

To me reidreviews.com isn't worth the $33 a year it costs. It was too annoying to be worth the bother, so it really gave me no value at all.

Sony has 7 models in the line-up, which is the same number as Canon and Nikon; Olympus has 6 (one of them is the E-P1, which isn't technically a DSLR's).

K-m replacement, just like the old K-m

It must have LV and Video to be competitive. Anything less will fail in the market. Pentax is not Sony. It actually needs to deliver fully-featured cameras to sell.

To be class-leader the new camera will also need to offer weather seals and/or articulated LCD screen.

This won't be enough for dpreview.com to give the new camera an HR, as its label will still be wrong (only Canon and Nikon get an automatic HR on this site). Pentax will not only need to add all the above features, but also to fine tune the JPEG defaults to dpreview.com taste, add AF point display in the viewfinder, an orientation sensor and a larger buffer. These are mostly good changes, regardless of dpreview.com bias.

K7 vs new canon 7D 18mp (That was fast too!)

The 7D is very nice, but unless one is invested in Canon gear or is a sports photographer, the K-7 represents a more compelling package:

- $400 less expensive than the Canon
- In-body image stabilization (SR) works with all existing lenses
- 77 weather seals (in Canon, sub-1D series "seals" are a marketing joke)
- Smaller and much lighter (758 gram vs. 945 gram, according to imaging-resource.com)
- DNG support
- Manual or automatic horizon correction using sensor tilt; Composition adjustment via sensor shift
- Pixel remapping
- Digital preview
- Automatic AF correction based on ambient light color temperature
- AF Assist lamp
- HyperProgram
- LCD color calibration
- Cold weather support down to -10 degree C
- Dust alert
- 3-exposure HDR
- Copyright embedding in EXIF
- Multiple exposures up to 9 exposures (without tone mapping or overexposure)
- The green button; ISO, WB and Menu button accessible using the right hand;
- Wider selection of sealed lenses (including two affordable ones); Much wider selection of stabilized lenses (via SR)

Pentax marketing wisdom - in ISrael

I wonder if Karat was starting to feel the heat from Pentax, because they've just announced a country-wide tour (or country-long, in the case of Israel) called "K-7 Challenge", in which they'll be demonstrating the camera and other Pentax gear in 11 different cities. This is definitely good news.

Pentax marketing wisdom - in ISrael

Why not get a K-7 from a gray importer or from abroad? Unless you shoot for a living, this situation doesn't sound critical enough to warrant a switch (unless you have other reasons to do so).

The E-3 is rumored to be replaced this year, but I doubt its successor would be as light and compact as the K-7, and it obviously won't support your K-mount lenses.

Sound like Pentax doesn't really want to sell in Israel either. Not that I blame them, it's a tiny market that's hardly worth their very limited marketing efforts.

By the way, the situation for Sony users is not that different. The local importer (Isfar) doesn't bother with high-end bodies either. It's all gray import as far as I know.

D300S an answer to the K-7?
Posted By Prognathous
Replies: 78
You be the judge. Here are the D300s advantages over the K-7:

- AF with 51-points, 15 cross-type + Auto-focus tracking by color using RGB AE sensor
- 1/250 X-sync (vs. 1/180 in the K-7)
- Viewfinder with 2% higher magnification
- 7 fps or 8 fps with the vertical grip (vs. 5.2 fps in the K-7)
- RAW can support 14 bit and can use lossy compression
- Dual memory slots (CF+SD)
- Movie mode supports contrast AF and in-camera movie editing
- Flash exposure lock
- Shutter guaranteed for up to 150,000 actuations (K-7 guaranteed up to 100,000)
- Wider selection of affordable 1st party lenses (Pentax lenses are becoming pricier by the day)

And here are the K-7 advantages over the D300s:

- In-body image stabilization (SR) works with all existing lenses
- $500 less expensive
- Almost 200 gram / 0.4 lb lighter; significantly smaller
- DNG support
- Manual or automatic horizon correction using sensor tilt; Composition adjustment via sensor shift
- Pixel remapping
- Digital preview
- Automatic AF correction based on ambient light color temperature
- HyperProgram
- Higher resolution (14.6 MP vs. 12.3MP)
- LCD color calibration
- Cold weather support down to -10 degree C
- Dust alert
- 3-exposure HDR
- Copyright embedding in EXIF
- Multiple exposures up to 9 exposures (without tone mapping or overexposure)
- The green button; ISO, WB and Menu button accessible using the right hand; RAW button
- Wider selection of sealed lenses (including two affordable ones); Much wider selection of stabilized lenses (via SR)

As a user of Minolta and Olympus DSLR's, if I had to choose between the D300s and the K-7 I'd prefer the Pentax even if the price was the same (assuming early issues are ironed out). For $500 less it's a no-brainer, at least to those who aren't invested in existing systems.

Who would have guessed Pentax would be so popular among overclockers? It could be that these guys are used to getting more than than pay for, and here the K-7 delivers in spades. In many ways it's like buying a D300++ for 2/3 the price.
