how about something like this?

- a different crop of the original photo
- less contrast
- changed the colour balance
- increased brightness so it's more balanced
- desaturated
... and fancy borders lol!

or the black and white version?

not sure if this is any good but that photo looked really dark to me. boosted brightness and de-saturated a little to soften the look.

outstanding photo!

personally i quite like the close-up feel of this shot. it shows what the musician is doing... focusing on her music. and by that note i've cropped it even more.

i've played around with contrast to boost her skin tone, darkened the background to draw more attention to the violinist. and i always love adding a touch of vignetting to these kinds of photos to isolate the subject.

this is what i would do...

1) recompose the photo so the subject below gets more attention.

2) shadow and highlight - lighten up the darker parts of the photo to give it better balance.

3) contrast and sharpness - especially to the clouds. theres just so much detail in there!

4) boost the colours - i played around with the colours a little bit and also added more saturation.

now lastly, none of this may be to your liking. but at least it may give you some ideas to play with :D

no. 1 is a stunner! very good shot!

opinion - it's an injustice to not make these panaromic! :D

note: i'd also fix up that orange flare in the bottom right but i'm not at home.

almost the entire top half of the photo is plain and uneventful (although i love the shade of blue) it draws your eyes to nothing and adds very little to the image itself.

perhaps play around with some cropping to tighten up the composition?

opinion on what? whether you should get a second-hand dslr for $200? absolutely!

as per adam's suggestion a *ist DS, or a used k100d / k200d - more than capable cameras for the price.

Yet another question about the AF indicators

i've got a k-x (and previous used the k100d) and i've always just used the center point to focus and then re-frame my shots.

just last week i picked up my mates k-x and played around with it. at first i thought there was something wrong with his lens back / front focusing but then after speaking to him, found that he had set it to 5-points (or was it 6 / 7?) AF.

thats my experience with the multiple AF points on the k-x - not very good at all. not sure if the 11 points would be an improvement or not... but personally i'd stick with center.

Help with PP

this is what i'd try

1) shadow / highlight - boost the shadows and reduce the highlights (use the show more options if using photoshop and play around with the sliders.)
2) boost overall contrast and brightness.
3) changed the white temperature with selective colour and playing with the neutrals.
4) topaz denoise - the background (masking the eagles so they don't lose detail)
5) apply sharpen edges.

nice composition. agree with jmr on points on sharpness / red tree. i think to create some mood you can boost up the contrast / exposure and reduce the saturation.

sorry for the small size... i ran this through picsay on my android phone. would have liked to have put some vignetting on it as well.

yeatzee - i think i'd actually be one to vote no for the following reason...

1) i probably can't appreciate the difficulty of insect macro nor insects themselves. as a photo subject, this one looks particularly awkward in pose - is that how they are?

2) the in-focus head draws your attention to it, nicely done, but i think that the head is in a poor location (not an ideal composition).

well those are my thoughts anyway. i like the photo but not 'PPG' like.
