No...I was going for a big country effect at this point but did not have my normal 10-20 lens I use for such things.
From the East Coast Trail guide... "A scenic climb and descent [111meters, 3.7 KM (one way)], rough underfoot, great views back to the cliffs of Southside Hills, Cabot Tower and on to Cape Spear and the Cape Spear lighthouses. Note this path has mostly low growth and is very exposed to weather (think fog, wind, rain)"
Beautiful scenery, but, well, this is when you are still .7 km from the road and still 70 meters up (i.e., 10% gradient :( ). That little black thingy where the road enters the trees is my car! I am 64 tomorrow. Guess I'll keep getting my exercise! Probably what I'll do is take both the 17-50 and 10-20 Sigmas up there and see/experiment. The 17-50 is a new lens. |

FWIW, the O-GPS goes for about $200, not $350. You can find them on sale at times for even less. o-gps1 in Camera and Photo Equipment and Accessories | eBay
The biggest two quirks (for lack of the better term) are learning where and where it won't work and how to properly calibrate it. The instructions are spotty at best in explaining both.
Since the unit uses magnetism to track, if you set up somewhere with a lot of metal in the ground (example, by the river here it used to be a mill, the ground is filled with iron slag and the tracker is almost useless there) it will not behave itself.
It will work perfectly out my apartment window, but will be thrown down on the ground level here for the reasons I mentioned above.
As for calibration, that just takes a bit of practice. You'll get to 'know' when you have and when you don't after a while. Once properly set, you can go all night without needing to retool it.
EDIT:
As another example, heres the Orion Nebula @ 300mm using a funky old 80's manual 300mm lens. This was either f/5.6 or f/8, 60 second exposure on the same borked K-30. October 3, 2014 - Orion Nebula by Jody Roberts, on Flickr

I would think you'd be better off looking for an O-GPS1 astrotracker rather than a fast 50. That way you could use your existing lens(es) at longer shutter speeds, as opposed to having to deal with the 50mm and its lack of extra length. You need to bear in mind, that f1.4 lens will probably still need to be stopped down to f/1.7 or f/2 to start getting usably sharp shots.
The astrotracker should be around the same price as the fast 50, maybe a hair more, but will be MUCH more useful out in the field.
Heres a shot I made with my 10-20 @ f3.5 using mine. The kit lens would probably give around the same results (only narrower, of course).

Live view is a good way to adjust exposure with histogram, but beyond +-2ev of exposure compensation, the histogram shown in live view is not representative of the histogram you get after taking the photo. Digital preview can be used to check actual histogram.
For lowest noise, spot meter on brightest part of the image + AE Lock and +2EV of exposure compensation give the most right sided histogram without highlight clipping.
For exposure level to render according to human, a incident light meter works great.

I had to clean up the trash, a parking sign and a traffic cone to make this look like an old photograph, but I like the look of it. (Don't look too closely or you'll see my slapdash work! Ha!)

These are the little 'petals' from the crystal blooms that form in the leads, the cracks in the sea-ice formed by the rise and fall of the tides near the shoreline.

It really depends on what you want the screen protector to do. For the most part, I only expect the protector to prevent scratches, fit perfectly and reduce glare. The hard devices really aren't designed to protect against breakage, but I suppose can provide some peace of mind. The best of the soft ones should be virtually unseen once applied, and show no bubbles. Of those, these are as good as it gets: Amazon.com : Vikuiti ADQC27 Screen Protector for Pentax K-50, 100% fits, easy mountable, crystal clear, anti-reflective, scratch-resistant : Digital Camera Screen Protectors : Camera & Photo
