Which lens cap for 20-40 with 55mm hood on?
Posted By LittleSkink

I use my DA 20-40 with the attached 55mm "hood". Mine has a deep metal lens cap which fits over this, but which unfortunately has got damaged, so I want another

I know the little hood is MH RA 55 (it says so on side)

I know that the O-LW65A is the standard metal cap (Pentax told me) for use as a lens cap without the 55mm

But I don't know what lens cap will fit the lens with the 55mm attached

anyone point me in the right direction please?

thanks mlag - I think the seller (dealer) had done a reset

but I just checked and distortion correction, lat chromatic aberration and the noise reduction was all turned on - a bit more responsive now :)

Hourglass expected behaviour after shot with K5ii?

Just picked up a s/h K5ii, mostly it seems to work as I expected - BUT it seems slow, shutter response is almost instant however - after taking a shot the hour glass appears on screen for probably a full second, maybe more. After every shot ?!

Have swapped from a 32GB 120MB SDHC to a 128GB 180MB Extreme SDXC to no effect

Changing from 'RAW + 4*JPEG' to '3*JPEG images only' doesn't really alter it

Running it at 7FPS (RAW+JPEG) it pauses at 18 frames (which sounds about right)

Is this normal? Do I need a faster SD card?

K10D or K5ii for Monochrome?

Just picked up a cheap K5ii and its a nice thing - and more different from my old K10 than I expected

Wondering which would be best suited to playing with B&W in digital? What experiences have folks had?

My thought is to explore moody, gritty, grainy.

My sense is the K5ii has more potential but the two camera have quite different sensors, ISO, dynamic range.

Ricoh should revisit K01

bit late to this party (and been in a similar thread over in Pro photos about Pentax rangefinder) but I think there is a niche here that could be exploited - a bit like when Land Rover raided the parts bin to create the Discovery and made a fortune

Pentax has some great IBIS tech and some great limited primes - and variants of those that can fit Leica registration distance already exist

Ricoh has a rangefinder history so we dont need to dilute Pentax brand values or DSLR focus

Fujifilm have proved rangefinder, with fixed lens (X100) or interchangeable (X-Pro) has a market. And an enthusiast market that will pay good money. But Fujifilm left out IBIS and arent as compact / friendly as they could be

A compact rangefinder style body (like Fujifilm X100 / X-Pro) with IBIS and either a fixed Limited lens (X100 variant) or short registration interchangeable Limited (X-Pro variant) would be amazing. If they went down the interchangeable lens route then only the smaller Limiteds need be offered - if you really want to put a zoom on it then a K to Ricoh adaptor would allow any legacy lens to work

Frankly a Ricoh branded X100/X-Pro variant with IBIS and pancake would be my ideal next purchase - I dont care if its APSC or FF (though I dont know what cost different that creates)

now that is a lovely, thing - why wouldn't Ricoh stick some K3 iii electronics and 21mm limited lens in to a design like that? Needs a few external controls mind

Pentax Rangefinder?

thanks folks

so the consensus is Pentax wouldn't. The K lens registration, history and stated strategy are all deal breakers - seems reasonable

But Ricoh could

A more stylish interpretation of the "rangefinder style" Fujifilm X100 series with a fixed 'limited' lens would be amazing - if you could order it with the limited lens of your choice, then WOW - I would make noises like the little girl in Despicable Me when she sees that unicorn at the fair

My 35mm GR is lovely but never felt the digital version gave me anything new. But every time I see an X-Pro I want one. Well except the X-Pro3 maybe . . .

Looking ahead to when the K3 iii is super successful, the K1 iii is flying out of retailers doors and 645ii has just be launched to great applause

- would Pentax look to do a Rangefinder to compete with Fujifilm?

I know it runs counter to their current stated strategy, and they have no history with such a design (the Q doesnt count), but if Pentax did their own interpretation of a Fujifilm X-Pro I would be really interested

maybe it would be quicker an less theoretical to organise a vote on a Lickert scale

In challenging conditions my 10-17 has (i) none - (ii) little - (iii) some - (iv) rather a lot - (v) unusable amounts of purple fringing

My sensor is: ___________

I wonder how the old masters, who loved their vivid pigments, would have dealt with Ansel Adams et al - didn't they argue that colour photography was vulgar and only black & white was actuality artistic

Prompted by another thread exploring the 10-17

it reminded me that back when digital camera first came along there was talk that "digital" lenses, especially wide angle ones had to be redesigned, to get the light rays more parallel so they hit the sensor at 90 deg rather than at an angle - I dont think this was just about light fall off / vignetting but cant recall

While sensors obviously have different resolutions, they presumably have different responses at the individual photo-site, because of the physics / geometry etc at that scale

The 10-17 can cause some pretty serious purple fringing, but some folks seem to suffer less than others - just wondering, are some Pentax sensors / DSLRs better able to cope with this than others, perhaps?

The 11-18 is superb, from what I have seen - much envy here

Not sure how you plan to use it, but having the 10-17 myself I see it much more of a novelty / fun lens (with a bunch of aberration issues to boot) while the 11-18 is a "proper grown up lens" with outstanding capabilities and almost nothing to see in terms of aberrations

A wide angle tilt shift for Pentax has been on my wish list for years, the Samyang/Rokinon just doesnt cut it imo

One can only hope that, once the K3iii is a massive success and the K1 iii flies out retailers door, they will add one to the lens roadmap

those are on a K1 - wow!

I can just see the edge of image circle in the corners of the 14mm image but the edge is pretty darn clean

Did these need a lot of PP to get rid of fringing?

I wonder if the fringing is camera dependent because (in my understanding) the way light is arriving at the sensor is different to say a telephoto, and the photo-site themselves could be contributing to aberration?

Could be wrong but I am sure I read in the early days of digital that wide angle lenses put light onto the sensor at an angle, and older wide angle lenses weren't recommended for that reason. On film it didnt matter. Modern "digital" wide angle lenses control the light to bring it closer to perpendicular to the sensor plane

thats really interesting, I was looking at an X-Pro2 to use my Pentax MF/limiteds, how do you get on with adapted lenses on the X-E1?

My main concern is focus, I tend to prefer wider aperture so zone / hyperfocal focus doesnt work so well, I assume everything becomes manual only (but Fuji doesnt have a Pentax green button?)

---------- Post added 04-30-2021 at 07:56 AM ----------

That is such a good point, I have Voigtlander 58 and Pentax M100, sounds like they would be a better choice than my wider primes

great stuff, thank you :)

the "ask the police" website in UK is quite good, it clarifies aspects of this

as others have said, its the public versus private space element that can be an issue - and looking like a photographer not a tourist, which is obviously harder in some cities / places than others

thats interesting, I have been looking at advice that suggests not making eye contact with folks - which seems wrong to me

I did try and get a photo taking mate interesting in going along, but he's really not keen - maybe I should look wider for a companion

As an alternative I looked at doing a course, but so far the only 1 that looked good cost quite a few quid

I picked up a HD 10-17 earlier this year - rather disappointed in the aberrations esp purple fringe is pretty bad

But it is fun - mostly the knack seems to be picking a good foreground interest and managing the massive background so to not distract from it. Or to cram so much foreground in that everything goes slightly bonkers. Thinking 'fish eye' is definitively different to thinking 'ultra wide'

Dont regret getting it, but wonder if the money might have been better put towards the 11-18 which is approaching stellar by all accounts

thanks chaps. In central London folks seem pretty "whatever", dusk in Tottenham not so much. So I wonder how things change around the country

I am more intrigued by the gentle aesthetic Saul Leiter style street photography rather than the trendy, rushed, story centred style

I am also pondering the camera, got a variety of un-intimidating primes but my DSLR is kind of large (and grubby). ME Super might seem friendlier, cant delete an image then though. Pentax never did a rangefinder style (al la Fufifilm X-Pro)

throughout lockdown my photography has been somewhat constrained (and I have ended up buying more kit than I really need to compensate)

As a reaction to this I want to get better at street photography, but it always makes me nervous. Not from a technical perspective but from a social one, what are people going to think, do or (possibly worse) say and how will I deal with that

- in the UK what sort of experiences have others had?

this is really interesting thanks folks

My wife bought me a mint 100 f2.8 M as a birthday gift a few years ago. Its a lovely thing but I dont use it that often as its an odd focal length on APSC

Had the new macro on my hit list for a while but found M100 with extension tubes to be pretty darned good, and the macro price has got a bit high of late - now I wont worry - but I will pull out the M100 and go play at the weekend :)

my thoughts would be KP or K3ii - I looked at both recently myself

K3ii is slightly older (lesser high ISO capabilities) but handles really nicely with everything in the right place

KP lacked top LCD and feels / handles rather differently (which didnt suit me but may suit you), has amazing low light capabilities beyond K3ii

either would be a very capable choice
