Wow...thanks, that did the trick! Hadnt remembered there were settings under that item. Very weird that this somehow got set... not sure how though I just did the firmware update. Perhaps that somehow was involved. Regardless, thanks!!!

Uploaded Images Rotated upside down on 645z

All of a sudden all my images when uploaded are being rendered upside down. There seem to be two menu related items related to auto image rotation (which I hadnt altered) Rotate in Playback and Save Orientation Info in the Custom menu. Its a simple binary 2x2 table, tried all the combinations and no matter what I do I cant get the images to load with the proper orientation.

If turn off the playback option and enable 1 sec preview the initial image displays correctly, but when I hit the playback to review it, its now flipped upside down. If I shut the custom menu option off, then I get horizontal correctly, but as you'd expect vertically oriented shots require rotation so I have to do them manually after upload. When the custom option is turned on, all the horizontal shots come in flipped upside down and while the verticals get oriented correctly they too are rendered upside down. At least like this I can bulk rotate everything, so while its supremely annoying at least I can work around it in a couple of clicks. Its pretty clear that the problem is in the Raw file, not LR as if I send it off to Iridient, it too renders things flipped.

I'm starting to worry that some sensor has failed, but I'm hoping I'm missing something obvious. Anyone seen this problem before, suggestions?

Lens Repair Recommendations?

Sigh... had it less than a day, fresh from Japan, a 120mm FA and, of course a mishap. First one in a long time. Anyway the lens over all is fine, but it managed to land on the aperture ring which dented. It can be moved with effort, but essentially the ring is frozen. Wondering if anyone can suggest where I should send it, or if its worth trying to take apart to bend it out a little so it will move freely.

Perhaps they'll have both similar to Phase One. Regardless, to some degree its a little out of their hands. The size of the sensor really depends a lot more on what Sony decides to produce. Presumably they have some input, but one has to wonder what Sony has planned for their own use.

Which is why I'd say no... buy a used D today, build a lens system and save the pennies for 3 years hence. :)

Pentax used in Nikon v Canon comparison

The flack you encountered was pretty predicable. Doing anything Canon vs Nikon is bad enough but comparing an 18mp one to a 36 mp one is bound to incite riots by the faithful. And then you add an interloper that nearly doubles the resolution again. There are too many gassers out there for whom acquiring the 'best' is not mere passion, its a question of ego. You can't be surprised at strong reactions when you name names and use the same sort of methodology that serious comparisons use, i.e. shooting the same scene, altering iso, looking at noise. Waves all kinds of red flags that simply can't be ignored by those sad souls whose self-identity is defined by the gear they use.

I think you would have fared far better and achieved more the result you desired had you approached this without any equipment names.... i.e the article could have been entitled something along the lines of, 'Comparing photos from three random cameras by three manufacturers with three different resolutions... lets have some fun'. 97.467% of their energy would have spent on trying to guess what was being used, rather neatly deflecting any potential ire away from the author. All the discussion would have been around guessing what equipment was in play.

First fortnight with the D. Been over thirty years since I last shot medium format, its quite a joy and a challenge returning to it. Thought I would join in and post a few initial shots.

Bag Recommendation: 645Z and 55mm lens only

Just to give you an idea, here's the Turn Style 20 with the 75 attached and the 150mm on board. If you're really looking to go small, I dont have the 55mm, but as it turns out the 645d with 75mm attached fits perfectly in the little Hadley Digital bag. I have to admit enjoying the irony of pulling such a large camera from such a small bag. Its is a nice combo when you're out for no particular reason but want to have the camera with you just in case.

If you like slings, Thinktank Turnstyles are great. I own two, a 5 and a 20. The 20 can easily handle my 645D with the 75 attached and the 150mm with plenty of room for a flash or third lens. I can fit the Fuji 50-140mm f2.8 zoom in there along with the other two. Lots of room for batteries and filters. With just two lenses and small flash, the 10 might work as well. Convenient access, feels far lighter on the shoulder than a standard bag.

Pentax 645D vs 645Z

Just received my lightly used D today. Havent had a lot of time to play with it yet, but given the few frames I've shot, I'm mightily impressed. I would have loved to have gone with the Z for the expanded ISO, DR and live view, but I simply couldn't justify the extra $5G. The Z is likely the better camera, but the D is certainly one heck of a value, particularly for those of us just rediscovering MF in the digital age.

645D/Z File Handling

Thanks for the replies! I actually pulled the trigger on a lightly used D this morning, so I guess its in the family now :) I do have SSDs on all my computers and a Synology 2TB Raid as well, so I'm fairly solid in that area. Both computers have SD slots as well, so should be good. My Mac book is an i7 Retina with the 1GB NVidia card so while it wont be stellar, it should be adequate at least for a while. Whereas with my APS-C gear I just shoot, transfer everything and sort it all out later, going forward it will pay to kill the obvious losers before they ever hit the wire. Moving up to MF for me is all about slowing things down a bit anyway.

645D/Z File Handling

Hi!

I've recently joined the forum as I'm contemplating a 645D or Z. Terrific amount of quality information here, greatly appreciated. One thing I havent seen discussed much is the level of difficulty involved in dealing with such large files. As a part of my calculus, I wanted to understand just how much more taxing processing will be. So I'm curious as to what sort of computer setups people are typically using in terms of memory and cpu power. Coming from Ricoh and Fuji APS-C land and working with LR/PS/Nik software on a recent Mac Pro 15" with 8GB, I'm a little concerned that my budget needs to factor in upgrades in this dimension as well. I do have a fairly high end 16GB Win 8 workstation (Velocity Micro) as well, but I much prefer to work on the laptop. Was also curious if there was any noticeable difference between the D and Z in this regard as well. Thanks for any advice you can provide!
