This is one of the best macros around. Sharp as a tack. It's manual so using it for things other than macros takes some practice. I bought it for it macro ability but ended up useing it more for a portrait lens.
I tagged a couple photos in my flickr stream which were shot with this lens.

I appreciate all the great feedback. But I should probably clarify a couple things. I am a track and filed coach and as such don't make a ton of money. For me Photography is more of a hobby, if i make over a $1000 a year i'd be ecstatic. That being said there is no way I'm going to ever get a D3 or for that matter Nikon's version of the 300/2.8.
It's pretty obvious that any full time sports photographer will be using a nikon or canon. But i will never be able to afford the top end bodies or glass.
If i jump it's going to be to a d7000 and a 70-200/2.8 with a tele-converter. To get that I'm going to give up 2 k10's, 18-55 kit lens, Vivitar Series 1 105/2.5, FA* 300/2.8, a 50/2, k1000 and a AF540FGZ.
Most of my photography is sports, but i also do a good bit a creative photography. I feel like i would be giving up a lot. If the k5 was good enough, i could sell my k10's and save up a little cash and still have a good lens selection.
On a side note, i hacked into my k10 yesterday and calibrated the focus for the 300/2.8. It is a wold of difference... I used to not be able to shoot at 2.8 and use auto focus. So we'll see how that works.

I shoot a lot of sports with my k10 and FA* 300/2.8 and the focus is driving me nuts. I am on the verge of selling all my Pentax gear and switching to Nikon. The 300/2.8 is such a great piece of glass, but if i rarely get a sharp photo what good is it? The k5 is suppose to have a better AF system. Is better AF with the higher fps enough to keep me from jumping ships? I'm planning on renting a k5 before i make any crazy decisions, but i wanted to see what y'all have to say.

OK so I don't know if I fully understand white balance so this may not make any sense. Is it possible to adjust the white balance based on another color?
Most of my photos are either cross country or track & field or some other team sports. The uniforms are always the same color so would it be possible to adjust the photo using a sample of the uniform vs and know good sample?
As a note I use lightroom to manage/edit my photos.
I was just thinking about this and I was wondering if it was possible.

The FA* 300 /2.8 is a great lens and I'm told it works great with the Pentax 1.7 TC. Both are hard to find but will worth with the K20.
There is a TC coming out for the DA* Lens but I don't know when it will ship.
Some of the long FA lens used to be available through special order. They are not listed on the website anymore though so maybe not.
As far as glass quality, I have no personal experience with the lens over 300. I have been told the Pentax makes excellent glass.
I don't know how helpful that was, but there you go.

@kunik... That's exactly what i was thinking of doing? I've been finding my auto focus slow and I was thinking that SDM might make it a little faster. And i could get a couple more 2.8 lens' Maybe I just need to upgrade to the K20

Does anyone have experience with both of these lens'. I have the FA* and I'm thinking about unloading it and getting the DA* and some other lens'. I know I'll lose a stop but I'm thinking that it will be worth it to get SDM. Any comments?

Yes... It goes on fine in either position, but is a real pain to get off of either position. Half of the time the UV Filter ends up screing off.

I have a Pentax FA* 300mm f/2.8 and every time I take the lens hood on or off it get stuck on the rubber that is on the UV filter. Does anyone else have this problem. I took the rubber cover off and I can screw the lens hood on and off with no problem. Has anyone done this? Am I going to regret no having that rubber piece.

300mm f/2.8 though I'm starting to use my kit lens (18-55) a little more and wish I had better wide glass
