Wow, 300-500 shots on a 4-5 hour hike???? I tend to shoot like I only have 24 frames...(film days)....so I may not have the volume, but I generally have a very high percentage of keepers.

The wife and I are headed to S. Utah/N. Arizona next week for two weeks. Can't wait, we have on our itinerary: Zion, Bryce, Arches, Canyonlands, N. Rim Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon, Mesa Verde, Great Sands.........and a couple of other National monuments on the way. Should be fun......prepping the RV for the road trip this weekend! I expect to come back with 1000 photos!!!

My backup system:
1. External hard drive backup which is kept at home. backup files (about once a month)
2. Burned DVD's backup of all photos (.dng's and .jpg's), keep in a fireproof safe (annually)
3. Burned DVD's backup of all photos (.dng's and .jpg's), keep in my office at work (annually)
4. Uploaded copies of all .jpg's to Shutterly (as the .dng's are processed to jpg's)
5. Uploaded copies of all .jpg's to my Smugmug account (as the .dng's are processed to jpg's)
All this, and somehow I am not satisfied that I am doing enough! I think I'll start burning DVD's a bit more frequently.

Very long.....about 1700 miles each way. The wife and I will switch off about every 2-3 hours.

No problem there...I have 2 8G Cards, a 4G Card, 3 fully charged batteries, and an RV with a generator so I can recharge if I need too.

I always take everything with me on our hikes (Sigma 50-500 Bigma, Sigma 10-20, Tamron 18-200, Pentax 43 ltd, AF 540 flash, filters, remote......tripod and monopod. It's about 20-25 lbs in total, but the backpack I have is quite comfortable, even on a 10-12mile hike. Won't be able to outrun a bear.......but the Bigma is a formidible weapon!!!

Just need to survive 2 more days of work, then my wife and I are off to Yellowstone for a week!! RV is packed up and ready to go.....just need to charge up all my camera batteries, format my memory cards, and make sure my sensor doesn't need cleaning.

I have been to the Far East (China, Taiwan, and few other places on that side of the planet) over 30 times in the last 14 years, and although finding someone that speaks english is generally not a problem.....the food most definitely is a problem. Here are my guidelines:
1. Do not ever drink water straight from the tap!
2. If you are handed bottled water, make sure the seal has never been broken. I have seen many of these bottles re-filled with tap water.
3. If your food does not come out steaming.....I would not recommend eating it.
4. Know where the batchrooms are (the ones with western toilets). If you do get sick, you will need to be within about 100 yards of a toilet (25 yards of a chinese toilet as you would probably have to strip down first).
5. Beer and Soda are generally very safe, but either pour into a clear clean glass, or clean the top of the can throughly. By the way....the beer is terrible over there.
6. Make sure your health insurance covers you abroad, not all plans will. You can purchase a policy very cheap for the short time that you are traveling.
7. Do not try to drive a car over there......extremely dangerous, and the traffic rules.....well, there seem to be very few.
8. If your in a busy city like Shanghai or Suzhou, keep your wallet/passport in your front pocket.
9. Beware of the "Famous Chinese Liquor".......that stuff can peel paint!!

My tripod was only about 10 feet away on the driveway. I could have been about level with the feeder if the tripod was on the porch, but the little critters would never feed from that side of the feeder.

Thanks, yes it does require a fair amount of daylight, so I used my flash for these pictures. The camera/flash said it was set to 180s, but it's hard to believe that the wing action could be stopped at this slow speed. I really thought it took much higher speeds to stop the wings on a hummer.

I bought one of those 8-Star filters and have yet to actually use it. Come to think of it, same goes for my UV filters as well. I don't use any filters on my lenses except for the occasions where a circular polarizer or an ND filter might provide some benefit.

I still have my Minolta X700 from over 25 years ago! It still works, and I used it primarily to shoot B&W since I got into developing my own film/prints. Then I had kids, and put it away for a very long time. When my kids grew up and I started to have time again, the digital SLR's were now on the shelf and I had a choice .....film or digital? I was comfortable with film, and concerned about making the switch (that fear of the unkown thing), but switched over anyway. So now I'll never go back to film again as I absolutely love the performance and flexibility I have with the K10D. When will I upgrade??? Probably when it breaks....hopefull a very long time.

I only use a UV filter as protection when I am on the beach, in a dirty/dusty area, or I am in an area that poses a threat to my lens (i.e. rock climbing). Otherwise it stays off the lens as I feel I get better image quality with the naked lens.

Well, I tried the "TinyURL" thing, and it only works randomly for me. Also, they don't seem to stick. I managed to get 2 of them in my original post at the top, and one of them disappeared about 10 minutes later.

I always rename my files once transferred to the PC, and the date is always included so having duplicates is next to impossible. Typical filename for me would be "Alaska vacation 1 081308.dng". On top of that, I have file folders for each group of pictures such as "Alaska Vacation 2008" or "Hocking Hills Camping June 2008". And all of these folders are with a subdirectory that defines the year like "2008 Photographs". This system has worked quite well for me, it's always easy to find whatever I am looking for, and it won't matter if the camera resets itself back to 0001.

Thanks Simon. I am pretty sure it's soft on the left because of DOF. My left shoulder was within about 12" of the structure, and I was center focused about 15' ahead of that point. I'm having fun with it!!

:lol: I have to say that I am quite pleased with this lens. I took it out on my waverunner on Lake Erie today for some shoreline shots. Yeah, I know, a bit risky, but the lake was boring and flat today, and I kept my camera in a Pelican case during long distance travels. Here are a few of the pictures:
