continuous shooting for best handheld shot

Thanks for the correction. I had understood from the manual that RAW data was not saved with continuous shooting (p 107). Maybe that was fixed in an update? Also, thanks for the link!

continuous shooting for best handheld shot

With my old Nikon Coolpix there was a shooting mode that if you held down on the shutter button, it would take several shots and pick the sharpest one. I have been experimenting with continuous shooting mode when using long lenses on my K-1 that are prone to camera shake. I realize that no raw data will be saved, but think it might be useful when a tripod is not practical. I have found that some of the shots are sharper than others. Anyone else tried this?

Will legacy lenses come down in price as mirrorless takes over?

Today I noticed on one of our local new and used camera stores' web site that they will now longer buy DSLR bodies because of the transition to mirrorless systems. That is interesting to me since they carry film systems going back to large format. Unless I come into some serious money, I expect my K-1 to be my last system camera. At the moment, well regarded legacy lenses are getting good prices. Will there still be a demand for them in the mirrorless age?

Cosmicar or CPC 70-200 mm f/ 4 MC zoom?

To anyone who might be interested. After comparing on a tripod, I does bring the same subject in a bit closer than the M200/4. It seems likely to me that it is the Pentax-A-70-210mm-F4-Zoom rather than the A 70-200.f4. Only it is labeled MC and not SMC. I have yet to see any flair problems, but I have not tried it with any strong backlighting so far. My complaint is mainly the size and weight, but it is free after all!

Cosmicar or CPC 70-200 mm f/ 4 MC zoom?

A relative passed this lens on to me and I have not done any serious work with it. My only Pentax telephoto is an M 200/4 and I have not used it much either. When I noticed some bad fringing in strong lighting with the M200 I thought I would get out my other old lenses to compare. It turns out that the Cosmicar/CPC handles contrasting edges a bit better so I looked it up. One site says that it was made by Asahi and was nearly identical to Pentax A 70-200/4. On this site the pictures do look close but the site also said it had 11 elements in 9 groups. The Pentax is said to have13 in 10.

Anyone have any information on this lens, or opinions? It does not have the the focus ring and zoom problems some have reported about the A 70-200/4. It is much heavier than the A200/4, but it does have the advantages of close up and zoom capabilities. I am mainly puzzled that it works better in digital than an earlier prime tele.

PS. I just found some information in the lens reviews. I would still be interested in anything new. There is one review that states it is this same lens, but mine has the built-in hood and the appearance is identical to the one shown here: https://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/SMC-Pentax-A-70-210mm-F4-Zoom-Lens.html

Recommended in-camera sharpness settings

Once while checking an image in the camera's display, I could not tell if the focus was fine enough. Then I discovered the sharpness setting was too low. Even when shooting RAW, the settings of the camera for JPG's are used on the display. That is one reason I like to use it in the camera.

Recommended in-camera sharpness settings

Some time back I found some recommendations for custom settings that I used and liked. Now they have been lost. The default sharpness settings in my camera are normal sharpness +1 in Landscape mode. I seem to remember using "fine sharpness" instead. I realize that with RAW that can be changed, but it would save time to have the RAW preview in DCU optimized to compare shots and lenses quickly.

Any recommendations?

smc 2.8/24 vs super-multi-coated Takumar 3.5/24 vs Sigma 2.8/24 Super wide II

The problem I was referring to was not motion blur. It was the distortion near the corners mostly in the upper areas, where the leaves appear to be moving.

I was asking about your comment earlier. Your advise was:
"I'd stick with the Sigma and improve sharpening technique"

Since reading this and other comments I have experimented in Affinity Photo with the built in lens corrections. There is even a profile for the Sigma 24/2.8 super wide II. I am getting more and more confident to use this lens stopped down to f16. I usually avoid this with wide angle lenses, but I think the diffraction can be overcome easier than the curvature of field at the edges. And AF seems to be fairly useful for sharpening.

This forum has been a great place for support and encouragement. Thanks everyone.

Thanks for the tip. I do not have photoshop. I will look to see if that correction could be made in Affinity Photo.

The examples I saw of the FA *2.8 were not at 100%, but at full screen on my laptop they looked good from edge to edge. The DFA21 definitely is better there.

On the technique, could you advise me on how to sharpen the leaves and branches on the trees on the edges of the frame when they look almost like they are moving? That is the main thing that annoys me in landscape images with wide-angle lenses.

It does come down to cost. I have not read anything that makes me think the smc 2.8/24 or super-multi-coated Takumar 3.5/24 would be significantly better than the Sigma 2.8/24 Super wide II for landscape photos. And then I need to find a decent subject and decide how much edge sharpness I really need to make a 16x24" enlargement. The Sigma might work better than what I thought.

If I got out more I could probably justify $300 or more for the FA 24/2, which has shown in several photos online to sharp even wide open.

I already own the Sigma 24 SuperWide II, but I noticed the SMC 2.8/24 and the Takumar 3.5/24 at a local photography store. I have read conflicting opinions on all of these lenses, so I guess that I might have to try them out if the store will let me. My question to this forum would be, is it worth the time? I have used the Sigma on my K-1 a few times. The color looks good to me and the contrast is fine unless there is too much light, but there is a gradual loss of sharpness as you move away from the center.

I really do like the compactness of these lenses, so I am not considering the modern wide zooms.

Photography simulating oil painting

Recently I visited the arts and crafts community in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. I have always worked to record the landscape and to capture the experience of nature as I saw it. In most of the shops there I was interested in the fact that most now print on canvas, and oversaturate the colors to look more like oil paintings with even brush stroke glazing over the finish. I can see how the advent of photo editing has led to this trend, and that would include what is possible with cell phone cameras.

The irony here is the effort and money I have spent over the years to emulate my favorite landscape photographers. I started with 35mm film and moved up to 6x7 film to get that extra amount of detail. Most of the enlarged prints I have seen could have been taken with 35mm negative film and kit lenses. The photos I see in this forum usually show great effort to reveal detail, clarity with an effort to look natural. Are we out of touch with the rest?

You Don't Need A Scanner When You Have A Pentax K-1

The reason i am wondering about this comparison is that I am thinking of selling my darkroom equipment, which includes a Rodagon APO 50mm enlarger lens. An enlarger lens should be even better than a macro lens for flatness of field and this being Apochromatic I hate to let it go anyway.

On the other hand, I have a nice Pentax DFA 100 macro, and I might never need the Rodagon for my K-1. The scanner does require some sharpening, but the camera does also.

Advice on replacing a Bogen (Manfrotto) 3001 tripod

I have not taken it out yet, but i can tell you that it is a pleasure to setup. The 3-D head on the Bogen was useful, but it always moved a bit when I tightened the handles. I think this ball head alone will be worth it. Also the leg locks are easier to tighten on the Benro.

The Bogen lasted for almost 30 years. Once the metal leg lock broke in half, but the company sent a replacement without question. The dealer here in Columbus, "World of Photography" gave me half the price that I paid for it new, so they know its value I am sure. The real plus was their 30% off in November and December!

The new tripod is only 1 pound less in weight but a noticeable difference for me.

Thanks for the comments. I found a good deal locally on the Benro TAD28CB2. It is 4 sections instead of the 3 I preferred, but the store had a sale plus with the trade in value of some of my gear, I decided it was a worthy upgrade.

Would you consider the Pentax k-1 to be a heavy camera? I do not have the Medium Format film cameras anymore.

---------- Post added 12-04-2019 at 10:24 AM ----------

Now I only use the Pentax K-1. It is heavier than some cameras, but definitely lighter than the RZ67. I have been looking at carbon fiber because of strength and weight advantage, but did not know anything about resistance to wind vibration.

The one thing that I don't like about the Induro is the price! I do hope if I get CF I will find that the price difference is worth it!

Advice on replacing a Bogen (Manfrotto) 3001 tripod

The Bogen 3001 has been a dependable tripod for many years, and it easily supported my Mamiya RZ67 film camera. It has the right height for my work that is mainly landscape, but now that I am older and using a K-1, I am ready for a newer and lighter tripod also.

Manfrotto currently has no tripods as far as I can tell that match the maximum height with the post collapsed with mine. They are either much shorter, or about 6 inches higher. I prefer 3 sections. Six inches might not be that much, but then the added weight cancels out my need to upgrade.

The folded length of the 3001 is only 21 inches. Set up without extending the center column is about 46.5 inches.

The Induro CLT103 folds to 22.6 inches and the max height with the column retracted is 49 inches. It is 2.82 lb verses the 3001 which is 3.6 lb without a head.

Will it be a good replacement for the 3001 as far as stability goes? Any other suggestions or advice? Is carbon fiber that much better than aluminum?

Depth of Field - update.

In reality the practical viewing distance to see the entire image means that the definition does apply to some extent. Only when you get so close to where you cannot see the whole image does the slight sharpness loss become a problem.

I have made 30"x40" enlargements from medium format film using the depth of field formula from Leslie Stroebel's "View Camera Technique" that look great at normal viewing distances.

By all means, if you intend to enlarge the main subject either on your screen or crop in a print, focus on the main subject. But if you are using a moderately wide lens and want to see the entire scene look good, the DoF scales calculated at about .03" on 35mm film or FF digital will generally look good in many situations. The scales on the lens vary, and it is usually necessary to stop down at least one additional stop.

At that savings I would go for the K-1, unless the upgraded features are really important to you. You should be warned that depth of field will be significantly less at a given aperture. Of course that can be an advantage depending upon your goal.

Full frame vs half frame

When I desired to move up from 35mm film to Medium Format, the first camera I bought was the twin lens 6x6 Yashicamat. It was a significant jump from 35mm. And yet I later realized that the twin lens system without interchangable lenses was the basic amateur system of its day.

On the other hand, digital 24x36 sensors can produce images close to the quality of professional Medium Format film. I still have my Mamiya RZ67. One of these days I want to do some comparison shots against the K-1. The advantage of the digital "FF" is that there is greater depth of field at a given aperture, field of view and subject distance. Not to mention the size and convenience.

DA 16-45 on the K-1?

A 24-75 or 24-128 would be handy, but with film I found the 28-100 zoom very useful. I don't mind changing lenses, and I really don't need a 12-24 full frame lens at the moment. The DA 16-45 covers the full frame from 20-45. I realize that it might not be the best option, hence my original question. What I need to find is a subject that would suit the 20-28 range to try it out, since I am covered after that with the 28-105.

Did some playing around with the 16-45 on the K-1. I might at least keep it for home movies, for the zoom and wide angle features. It is usable around 20mm on. For still landscape photos on the K-1, I find that infinity focus is best. The curvature of field helps the near things and the outer edges to be sharper at f8 and beyond. I have yet to find how much acceptable enlargement I can get with this technique.
