Because after waiting forever for the FF to come out, I finally gave in and bought a K-5 IIs to replace my K-10.
It came today. Beautiful camera. Love it already.
Tomorrow there will likely be a FF announcement....

I've worked a ton of overtime since November just for this reason, and now finally have enough.

For a couple months been working overtime and have saved enough for a FF. Was on the edge of jumping ship to the Nikon camp, but kept dragging my feet because of an uneasy feeling over it.
I've had opportunities to use both Nikon and Canon but neither seem as well thought out as my old Pentax K10D. Perhaps it is just because of what I have got used to for the last 6+ years. After enough use anything will feel natural (even a Canon)
But this is encouraging news from Pentax.
Closing my eyes it isn't hard to imagine me and my Pentax FF enjoying a nice evening flying over Central New York with the doors off with the smell of springtime filling the cabin as the shadows grow long....

I did a little searching on PF for these, but the discussion was several years old.
Does anyone have experience using the Sigma?
Is there any advantage to paying the extra for Pentax?
For macro I do a variety of things. Bugs, flowers, mushroom, fungi and more. But mostly outside stuff.
Suggestions?
Thanks,
George

Mine, on a K10D, lasted about 30,000 before going up and never coming down. Had repaired and have used almost every day over the following 2-1/2 years.
Waiting to see what Pentax has planned as replacement for K-5.

What concerned me was the distortion of the lights. I've been playing around with the camera and lens at home and find the same thing. Guess once the rain/snow stops I should get out with tripod, and experiment. Maybe this is just the price we pay at F/1.4? Maybe it is my poor focusing? Attachment 112698 |

This is the first time I've used this lens for outdoor night time shots downtown. When home I noticed all the distortion on the Christmas lights.
What's going on here? Is this just what I should expect for this lens and lights at night?
I have to add that I was shooting hand held with ISO400 F/1.4 1/50 sec Shake reduction ON
I like the compact size of this lens and the ability to shoot without flash indoors. But this really surprised me!
How would the Pentax 31 F/1.8 do in this situation? Attachment 112695
Thanks,
George

For a long time I obsessed over Full Frame. However, do I really need it? I carry my aging K10D everywhere with me. Hiking in the mountains, in my airplane and, rarely do I get into my car without it.
A while back on a hike in the High Peaks of New York I slipped and fell. Yes I managed to keep my camera from hitting the ground, at the expense of my elbows (which are still sore). It made me realize that it is only a matter of time before something disastrous occurs. Do I really want to be carrying $5,000 worth of camera and lens around?
I do want the lower noise and greater depth of field. It would be wonderful to go back to the days where I could walk around with my 50/1.4 and not have the field of view so narrow.
After all this time I guess my big complaint is not knowing what Rocoh/Pentax is planning for the future. I'm not talking the secret specs of future camera, only the general plan for camera formats. It seems all other manufacturers have made this clear. If I knew FF was in the future for Pentax I could plan accordingly.
Friends have D700 and 5DmkII and they are great cameras. But I like everything about my Pentax. It is so well designed and thought out.
At this point my plans are to wait and see what is next. If it is an APS-C well then that is what my next camera will be.
I just want to keep photography fun and do the best I can.

I love my Sigma 30/1.4.
Indoors I use ISO400 which is a high as an old K10D can comfortably go.
If I had to pick something else it might be either the Sigma 24/1.8 or 24/1.8 to gain both closer focus and slightly wider FOV. These focus at 7.8" and 7.1" compared to the Sigma 30/1.4 at 15.7"

I work nights, which allows me to be out afternoons doing what ever I want. I spend at least 6 hours a week with my camera from early spring to late fall. Way less during the Central New York winters.

Thanks everyone for the "reality check"
The points made are things that I did know. I am aware that I'm very susceptible to always looking at grass on other side of fence...
In terms of money there is no question that sticking to Pentax is the best way to go. Jumping brands will easily cost $5K just to get started.
Compact size and weight are a plus for me.
And if sometime in the future I "really" need to go FF. I can do it then.

Lowell, You are absolutely correct about DOF. And yes At 1000' it isn't an issue. Aerial photography is only a small portion of my camera use.
With a FF I can substitute my 30 /1.4 with a 50 /1.4 giving me about the same FOV but narrower DOF.
Low noise is a big issue as I love to shoot indoor family gatherings handheld without flash. With my K10 I can't go past ISO400 without noise being an problem. Thank heavens for the shake reduction!
Perhaps I've been making too big an issue and getting to obsessed about going to FF. The K-5 will solve my noise problems.
That is why I put this message out there. Advice from those more experienced and knowledgeable is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all the responses.
I can't stress just how much I love my Pentax. I've used a friends Canon 5dMk2 and 20d and neither has intuitive user interface of even my older K10D. Nikon seems a little better. It's like the difference between OS-X and Windows. OS-X is elegant, windows is... (well that's a discussion for somewhere else)
I use my camera for aerial photography, ground and air to air. My partner and I are building a business. The camera is also used almost every day for my own personal use. It is always with me hiking so weight and size needs to be considered. For that matter in the plane too.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not looking to fit into the crowds Canon/Nikon. I like being different.
Example: Prefer flying gliders instead of airplanes (though bought airplane too last year); Sail not power boats; ride recumbent bike, snowshoe; made living with Windows but now only use Mac, and own a Pentax...
I feel there is a pressure around me to go Full Frame for the image quality and DOF.
Perhaps the wiser decision might be to stick with Pentax. We will see. Must go play with camera now...

I've waited and waited since before the K-5 for some indication that Pentax would introduce a FF camera.
If I knew it was only a year or two out I would buy a K-5 and wait. But nothing is ever said to show us what the future will bring. I don't see where Pentax acknowledging a planned FF would threaten APS-C sales much since they will appeal to different markets as demonstrated by Nikon and Canon. In fact knowing this would reinforce brand loyalty!
I love my K10D and its well thought out design and ease of use. But, time is up. With the new Nikon D800 about to be released I am going to cut my losses and change brands. Once I have the Nikon in my hands all my Pentax stuff will go on eBay.
I WANT A FULL FRAME PENTAX! (or assurance one is coming)

I'd been watching PentaxForums forever in hope of a hint that a FF is on the way.
The K-5 looks FANTASTIC however I worry that I will feel I settled by not going for what I've wanted over the last several years, and that is a full frame camera.
Considering all the factors in purchasing a Nikon FF (D800 in spring), starting all over with lenses, getting squat for my K10D and half dozen lenses, the weight of a larger camera, the thought of hiking rugged terrain with $5,000+ in my hands makes me question if leaving Pentax might be a good decision.
I love my K10D. It was such a well thought out design and user interface. It still takes great pictures. (Me being the weak link in that process :)

I would be willing to pay D700 or 5DmkII prices for a FF from Pentax. Rather than the cost of selling and buying everything over in Nikon or Canon. But if I am forced to do it I will, in the spring of 2011

I can understand Pentax not announcing a camera before it is released so sales of a current model are not affected.
However.
I am at a point where I would like to move to Full Frame and it would be nice to know if Pentax is planning for a camera to fill this need.
I love my K10D. It is getting old, the K7 is great but I don't want to continue down a dead end road and eliminate my options in the future.
I've used a friends Canon 20D and 5D mkII and it doesn't come close to the well thought out design and interface of my Pentax. Nikon seems better in my experience with the D300.
If there is no hint of something FF in the next few months I will probably be moving to Nikon D700 or 800(?)
