It was my first DSLR, took tons of great pics with it. Now I use a K5. But the K200D was a winner.

If you like to Travel as I do and take your Pentax everywhere as I do, do not invest in a Camera Bag, instead get something like a KATA or Lowepro Camera Backpack. They look on the outside just like a good quality large backpack with sturdy thick comfortable straps, but inside they have room for bodies, lenses, flash, filters, SD cards, munchies, water, Mono or Tripod, Laptop, extra Shirts etc. I have used mine all over Europe and take it to Laguna Seca for Road Racing every year, plus all my Son's sports etc. Mine is at least 8 years old and still looks new. Got my oldest Son one last year. Amazon is a great place to get them from. Kata's are bright yellow inside, Lowpro light Blue, makes it a lot easier to find your stuff in low light. I own the Kata 467...and love it.
Also, if your a intimidated by the tons of Software tools out there for messing with your photos, try Picasa from Google, does a great job covering and correcting all the little blemishes we get in our shots at times. Plus Google Photo Tool gives unlimited storage for you pics if they are under 16Mbs each. I have thousands of pics backup on it.
Keep on shooting!

Drove the 900 miles south Summer of 2013 for the Monterey Historics (Corvette was the feature Marque) and the Wife and I did a drive of 17m drive in Carmel where I grabbed the back-up camera and took this picture. Just love the pop of the Millennium Yellow against the very grey background. Shot ISO 400, FL 26mm, F9 1/500th.... |

LOL, someone is still using Norton? A company like Ricoh/Pentax is not going to put out a virus file. A FYI, the "FREE" MS AV works great, have used it on all 4 pc's here and never an issue, and its not bloatware like Norton is in my experience. Never notice it and thats how a AV should be, and who better to protect Windows?

If you have Windows 7 or higher, why would anyone pay for an AV? The MS AV works better than any I have tried before and I have tried many. With all the flack MS has taken for years for holes in its OS's, who better to protect than them? Its in their best interest. Biggest plus I can say in several years of running it, I have never noticed it. (can't say that for Norton, Avast, McAfee, and others) Have it on 5 PC's in this house, and not once have we been infected. Run both a wired 8 port network and a wireless N network.

Was at the ALMS race at Laguna Seca this past weekend, shot my first ever Video with about 30 mins left in the 4 hour race, its maybe 5 mins long or so. No external Mic yet, still captured the sounds pretty darn well. Youtu.be |

I was born a Super Program in New York..and traveled to SoCal in 1983 with a 70-210mm Pentax A lens along side me. My Owner worked part time in one of the biggest SoCal Camera shops at the time, I got to play with all sorts of loaner lenses as we shot races at Riverside International raceway, did some weddings, did a show for Stand 21 and even shot Corporate Covers for Western Digital Corporation..I lived a long life going to races and kids sports year after year. In 2007, I went digital as a K200D in April of that year. We picked up some more lenses, and the routine was the same. In May of '11 we picked up a 55-300mm Pentax and spent almost two weeks in Europe and ever shot an F1 race in Spain. I was living large, in June of 2012 we moved to the PNW...then in Feb of 2012, I grew to a K5. More lenses too..Sigma 10-20mm, Sigma 18-125mm and a 600mm Mirror. Scenery is different up here, but I'm enjoying my time here quite a bit...

While I have note hiked that area, I did "hike" all over Italy, Sicily, Croatia and Monaco 2yrs ago. If I did it again, I'd take 2-3 lens.
For the incredible Vista's, and if you do any inside shooting of Cathedrals....you need the Sigma 10-20mm. It will better showcase what your shooting then almost anything. (Tamron 10-24mm is very good also)
My Walk-around...tough choice. Something that starts near 18-135mm is nice, but not enough on top for some shots. Maybe a 18-250mm.
I did it with my K200D, plus the kit 18-55mm and the DA 55-300mm. (We also did the Spanish F1 race) So I know lenses I'd wish I'd had. And the K200D was great, except for the lack of good low light shooting in Cathedrals. I worked it hard and came away with stunning pictures. (thousands) With a modern body the low light shooting is a huge bonus if you think your going to face that.
I use a Kata backpack, it looks like a high quality regular backpack, but its made for your gear and is weather proof. And bright yellow inside so you can find your gear in the lowest light.
And do't forget some decent quality CPL's for all that beautiful Italian sky..

I shoot almost everything (unless dealing with lighting conditions) at +.7 ev since day one with my K200D....the colors just look better that way. (not with flash though) With my new K5, the metering seems more accurate.Suggest you play more with the KR and find out what works..

John (I'm also John) I picked up Airfare for my 2 younger sons and I for Seatac to San Jose, $199 round-trip each. San Jose is about 75 miles north of Laguna, a quick rental car drive. This year is the very last ALMS race, 2014 they combine with Grand-Am to become SCR.
Love the Panoz shot!

Exactly. I got my K200D in '07 after having used a Super Program since '83. I knew no better, I go to all sorts of Auto races, Airshows, etc, plus I have 4 Son's so that means Little League, Track, Cross Country, Soccer, Band, Concerts.....and I learn and learn how to improve as a digital photographer. I bought the K-5 with the same intentions and a lot more wisdom now, even though I saw some reviews mention it wasn't ideal for sports, I figured could be worse than my K200D which I actually think does damn well after having run many thousands of quality shots with it.
I cant wait for this May when my Son's and I go to Laguna Seca (our 11th year in a row) for the ALMS 6 hour race, I'll have both bodies loaded and ready to use, should be a blast!

I'm not sure what mah (milliamp per hour) rating the stock battery is, but on Ebay I see them in 1400, 1860, 2000 and 2100 mah ratings. The higher means more juice and longer lasting, though of course these are all made in China and who knows how accurate the rating is.
And to the user who does not like using a grip...get some nice old school Metal & Glass lenses and I bet you'll change your mind. The grip filler with 6 eneloops vastly improves the balance and handling.

Bought mine back in '07 before Comic Con, got the Grip right off, and it worked well with my old Glass from my looooong lasting Super Program SLR. (Still have 2 of those) Before we went to Europe in '11 I added the 55-300mm. I have taken it to Laguna Seca and LBGP every year, all over Europe, countless kids sports, concerts, etc.
Just last week I added a K-5, but I"ll keep the K200D around for myself and for my younger sons to learn with. (Oldest already owns a white K1000 and a white Kx)

I just got one myself! Arrived yesterday. I have K200D I bought back in '07 and still works well (though there is a small series of cracks in the LCD cover glass bottom corner, but doesn't affect the operation) but I wanted the much expanded ISO range and HD movie capability. Today my Sigma 10-20mm showed up, man what a cool lens!

I spent 14 days (most in Italy) in 2011, I took my 18-55mm and my 55-300mm.....I wish I'd had a 10-20mm Sigma. (just bought one yesterday finally) You will see so many landscape/building/church interiors where the very wide can get you some spectacular photo's. I'm ready for our next trip.
And we fit in the Spanish F1 race at Barcelona at the end of our trip, so the 55-300 was perfect for that.

Wow, am I glad to see this thread! I shoot everything, including lots of sports. (Mostly kids and HS) and tons of racing (American Lemans) and when I saw reviews dissing the K-5 for Sports Photography, I thought, could it really be any worse then my 6+ year old K200D (which takes awesome sports shots). I picked up a very low use one (under 3K shutter actuations) and plan on taking it to Laguna Seca this coming May. Already ordered a grip, more SD cards and plan on a Stereo Mic for video. Hoping my Eye cup from my K200 fits also.
Love the shots in here, keep it up!

It would be real cool if you could put together a How-To guide with pictures on exactly how you did this so others could do the same thing.
I discounted the K30 due to lack of a grip option, I like to use some old heavy glass and it balances much better with a grip and batteries down there.
Good work!
