mounting pentax on nikon?

I haven't tried it yet. I sold all of my M42 (assuming that's what you're referring to) when I sold my K10D. The literature I have read recommends says it will only work in M or A mode, turning off AF and using spot or center-weighted metering (stopped down) for best accuracy. I also saw recommendations for manually entering what lens you're using for greater accuracy and for bettter exif data. I would assume that the K-mount adapter works the same.

Looks like you can use AF mode and get focus confirmation with this this gadget.

Newbie (on a budget)'s first flash

I haven't seen it here in this thread yet, but it bears repeating: be very careful what flash you use on your camera's hotshoe. Some older flashes have very high trigger voltages and can fry your hotshoe or camera when fired on-camera. The Vivitar 283 is one of the "unsafe" flashes. You may get away with using it for a while, but don't be surprised if you get zapped. The 285's are hit & miss depending on what model they are, but most if not all of the Nikon flases are safe. I used SB24's and SB28's on the hot shoe in manual mode with no problem. Nice units. I have heard the AF280T is a nice flash if you can find one, but I have no personal experience with them. This table may help with voltage questions.

If you're not afraid of film, you like the Fuji name and you want maximum detail from any given shot, you may want one of these. :D

In all seriousness, good luck with your decision.

When I was shooting Pentax, this lens was practically glued to my K10D. Out of all the lenses I had, it was the last one I sold too, just in case the body didn't sell. Congrats on discovering an economical beauty. I don't know if the photos in my sold thread can still be accessed, but here are a few more examples of what this lens can do (keeping in mind macro-esque fun). Cheers, A.

Zack Arias wrote a pretty cool review ignoring the usual measurbating and candidly focusing instead on the things that people who use this camera A LOT would notice.

Wow -- what a beauty. I'll bet that would do nicely for portraits wide open. Those 135's are nice and compact compared to the 50-135 zooms. Had one that I used on my bellows -- sweet for that as well (greater working distance and such). Good luck!

Don't forget to consider the Nikon SB24 and SB28 flashes -- they are solid, adjustable and will safely trigger from your Pentax cameras.

Faster Flash Sync

I won't debate you on your lens opinions. I'm very happy with the ones I have so far. I was also quite happy with the lenses that I had for my K10D, though none of the ones that I used regularly were labeled "Pentax". Point being, the topic and discussion of this thread revolves around flash sync and I pointed out an article to other cross-system shooters and/or miscreants in the Non-Pentax Forum that they might find interesting on the flash sync topic.

Happy Saturday!

The point of the article is that the camera doesn't tell you "no". There are creative applications where even if you don't get full power you have an extra creative tool. Even if you push things to 1/500 and it doesn't light 1/6 of the frame in daylight (depending on the scene) it may not matter -- you wouldn't get a black band to crop off and "lose pixels", you get a graduated ND filter. Again, the perk is that the camera doesn't just cease to trigger the flash.

What to bring to the hospital?

Easy at our hospital -- photos and video of the delivery were not allowed. Probably for legal reasons...or because papa would be in the way.

The OP's soft-box thoughts reminded me that I was in our den unpacking the umbrellas and lightstands (ala Strobist) that had just arrived on my doorstep when my wife walked in the room and said, "um, honey...I'm not sure, but I think my water broke". Needless to say it was a couple of weeks before that stuff was picked up again. She was 4-weeks early by the way. #1 advice -- PACK NOW! (c:

When my daughter was born 3 years ago, I brought my K10D and 50/1.4 (my only DSLR and my fastest lens) and shot with available light. It was good enough to take a few snaps while we were being sleep-deprived and generally overwhelmed by our new life.

With the red, blotchy skin & so forth, I found a B&W treatment looked nice.

Have fun & congrats in advance!

Thanks guys. For my new kit, I have a 17-50 (Tamron) and a 50-135(Tokina), but I will still pick up one of these because I use that 35mm-75mm range a LOT and this lens elimiates a lot of lens changing. Then the close-focus feature is just great for impromptu food photography and detail photos. Love it, love it, love it.

This lens is now sold -- thanks for all of the interest and commentary.

Cheers,

Adam

Item for Sale
Tamron 28-75mm SP AF XR Di LD Macro yada yada yada

Asking Price
$310US*SOLD!

Item Location
Atlanta(ish)

Item Description
Tamron 28-75mm SP AF XR Di LD Macro - with so many letters it's gotta be good, and it is. I called this lens "my precious." This one was practically glued to my K10D and the reason that many of the other lenses that I have sold here saw so little use. It is in great shape with no scratches on the glass or damage to the coatings. The barrel, etc is in great shape. I ALWAYS used the hood, so I imagine that helped to protect things. I was holding this one til last to make sure everything else sold first. If I was going to keep anything with a Pentax mount, it was going to be this lens. Purchased used, but not abused on this forum.

*To satisfy the urges of so many of our thriftier members who seem to have multiplied exponentially recently, this item will be pre-haggled from $310 to $300 plus shipping (and no less) to the first person to come up with the funds.

Cheers!
