Weekly Challenge Weekly Challenge #648 - Almost does count

This one is from a long long time ago, at least that is what I thought, it was 2021. I wanted to shoot a photo of an elegant perching heron and instead I got this when he/she decided to “bail” on me. Way less elegant :).

Winners challenge #646 - Lonely

I was a bit worried about this challenge but I was very pleasantly surprised by all the entries this week and to top it off, they al have a different take on the subject. Not that that makes judging any easier obviously. As said or implied in the challenge itself, the main take would be on the feeling of the photo and that supersedes the technical aspects of everyone’s photos. Not that the technical aspect is my main driver normally, but in this challenge I even pay less attention to it. So, now to the judging itself.

Kerrowdown - Free time - this first contribution to the challenge is a very good start I have to say. The “little” woman against the fastness of the see/ocean works really good especially because you went panorama with the shot. The fact that the woman has her hands on her head completes the shot. I can’t tell if it’s a composite or the cutout but either way it works.

Yaki - Poet’s bench - somehow I get the idea that I have already seen this photo before, but don’t quote me on that as my memory is a bit in shambles. What I like in this photo that it gives a bit of a vibe of a location where you can contemplate about life after a long hike. A lonely bench under a lonely tree. I bet in summer when the tree has its leaves it is even a more marvelous place.

Jacamar - alleyway - I like that you went all dark in this photo. It creates a moody picture with a lonely person going somewhere in the far distance. I wondered if the person was coming or going, but I “decided” that the person was wearing a backpack and was therefore going to some unknown place.

Xs400 - Chinese man - this photo grabbed my attention because it’s reasonably simple in its setup. Just a lonely men sitting on some stairs from some building. You can almost see the man thinking. His look in the distance add to that feel. Great photo from a I bet bucket list location.

Peptheyep - seagull - the resolution is just about enough to be able to see your seagull. Normally where there is one, there is a whole flock of them but you managed to get the lonely one out there even if it took you a 1000mm setup. The fact that the subject is so small in this photo strengthens the feel of a lonely bird in a lonely place.

Andy58 - I wandered - a lonely cloud in a forest the rest bright blue sky. It’s a different kind of lonely but it still encapsulates the subject very well. I like the fact that you even had the idea of taking a photo of a cloud in the sky, that is some thinking outside the box, at least for me as I would not have gotten that idea I think.

Atupdate - winter bench - another bench but a completely different photo. A lonely bench waiting to be able to perform its duty on a more sunny day in spring and summer. I always like photos of empty benches as they, for me, always have a lonely feel to them. They need to be sat on and if that is not the case they are lonely.

Jchorst - standing alone - that is a great photo you took here. The lonely man in an empty cafe or bar drinking a cup of coffee while looking at what seems to be business cards. Maybe he is looking for someone to share the loneliness with. I like that you went B&W for this photo as I think it works better than the color one. The poster on the wall is also a great addition as it gives a little subliminal message that even if you are lonely, “you’ll never walk alone”. I know that is not always the case obviously but the message is nice anyway.

Noelcmn - man on beach - you almost got me with that one. On my first glance I thought how did Noel get a photo of someone standing on a frozen lake in South Africa. When I opened my eyes a bit further I saw that it was a man standing on the beach looking down. No idea what he is looking for though, maybe just himself. There is a Dutch saying that would also fit this photo very well and it goes like this : “hij is spijkers op laagwater aan het zoeken” which literally translates to looking for nails in shallow water but which practically translates to trying to nitpick over something.

Ivan - station? - great dark and moody photo. I assume it’s some kind of train or metro station and these already have a lonely feel to them during the nights when they are more or less abandoned. That you caught this shot with a lone traveler in it only adds to the feel. I am glad you didn’t go with the beer an as that doesn’t give the same feel as this one by a country mile in my opinion.

And then the “ranking” of this weeks challenge and I have to be honest, I changed it a couple of times as everyone brought their best game.

1. Xs400 for this great photo made on a journey that many would want to make.
2. Jacamar for showing loneliness in a normally not lonely environment.
3. Ivan for making the lonely environment even lonelier.

HM : Peptheyep for the little seegull, Noelcmn for the guy looking for nails :), Jchorst for catching the scene with the poster.

Hi Yaki,
I wanted to start this challenge with a poem to get the idea out to all participants but it was a bit long so I opted for the shorter take. There are indeed masses of poems that are loneliness themed as I found out. I actually found a poem by Peter s. Quin named “a man walking in the street” that i thought to use. I like that you also do poems which is a bit like photography in my idea, just a photo with feeling set in words. Photoshop or comparable programs won’t help with fine tuning it though, it’s more like the old fashioned film photography.

Another week for a photo challenge although it was a bit hard to get a subject after the poetic one jchorst posted last week. I chose a somewhat different one for this week so no poetic but one about the feeling in a photo and that feeling has to be lonely. It doesn’t necessarily have to be someone being lonely but the feeling has to be there. So dig into you archives and/or go out wandering and see what you can come up with as I am really curious about your work on this subject. The subjects can be people, animals or things, that's up to you. I give you som examples to make things clear. Have fun!

The fine print:
Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.

The Challenge will run until midnight next Thursday April 4th, whichever time zone you are in.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo.
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

Oh, oops didn’t see that one coming and I only checked about 2 minutes ago. Thanks jchorst for the challenge and the judging, I know time can sometimes be somewhat of an issue. We Pentaxians need 25 hours in a day I think. I will have to come up with a challenge subject which I will probably do some where today and I do expect Ivan to subject a photo during this challenge :).

Not going to contradict your remark, but I am from the Netherlands which is a long way from the southern hemisphere. That said, I spent a lot of time in Tunisia (at the coast where our beach house was) and did not have real seasons there. It was a bit between hot and not hot with a very occasional rain shower in late autumn or winter. We did have 25° Celsius (77°F) at Christmas though which is really comfortable.

Not a transition from winter to summer in this photo but one from summer to autumn. The shot was taken in the morning late in september. I used the K3 mark III combined with the Irix 150mm f2.8 macro in all natural light. I really like these transitional period when you get the “not so perfect” photos which in my opinion are perfect.

This challenge is somewhat outside of what I normally do. People is not really my forte, but as the challenge was open to interpretation I do have a photo that qualifies. It is an ice statue a couple of winters ago in a musical themed exhibition.

Well, I get lucky here as I exclusively use macro lenses at the moment. I have a Irix 150mm f2.8 macro or better said, two of these as I hate changing lenses for some reason and the other macro lens is the world famous SMC Pentax-A* 200mm F4 macro ED.
The below photo is taken with the 200mm and is a Tiger Cranefly. These look scary but are only about 18mm big and not harmful as they do not bite or sting.
The photo is taken fully manual obviously and with only natural light. The insect was sitting on my Hydrangea and it was pure luck I saw it in the corner of my eye when coming back from my daily “walks”.

If that ever happens, I will “finish” my other hobby which is Islay whiskey and to be specific Laphroig. I have a couple of collectible bottle hidden away and if I empty them an apocalyptic event would not bother me much anymore I guess. But let’s keep it positive so I can keep collecting them and we all keep our feet dry.

Scotland is still on my bucket list by the way although I doubt if I ever get there due to health reasons and accessibility issue as I use a set of fancy wheels to get around.

To be honest :), I actually live in the “Flevopolder” which used to be the bottom of the sea and I always say that if the sea levels rise I keep mug feet dry the longest as we have dikes an very good pumps to keep the water on the proper side of said dikes. Obviously that excludes Scotland as you live well above sea level (I assume)

Man o man, you send me on a wild goosechase for this one. I was convinced I had a photo of rain in Tunesia which is reasonably rare, especially in summer but I was not able to find it. It might have been a non-Pentax photo that I took. So I had to go another route and as you requested rain, the heavier the better I came up with this interpretation with the aftermath of rain (even though it was still raining when I took this photo). It’s not necessarily heavy rainfall, but for this little fellow it’s probably extremely heavy.
I hope this qualifies, if not, just let me know.

Thanks. Soft focus with that lens is not really difficult though :). Focus is really hard, especially when it’s windy outside. Also you only have shutterspeed and ISO to play with and in the days I used the lens, I basically had focus fixed which only leaves shutterspeed. The f stop is fixed.
