Why is Ricoh even bothering with a FF?

They should have done Mirror-less Full Frame if they are looking to the future IMHO

I would never do back to reflex but would consider a mirror-less FF, I am just not so interested in the Sony offerings.

Of course I guess they have done their market research and think there is a big enough future in Reflex FF to be worth their while to try and get some of the Canikon market share, I just have my doubts.

EDIT: After many years it did however get me back to the Pentax Forums to at least look at the discussion on this topic.. LOL

My K5 Experience...

The stains are weird to say the least..

I am very happy to hear the AF is noticeably faster than the K7 in good light... However the AF accuracy was always a problem for me in low and especially incandescent lighting.. I swear by incandescents being the problem for my previous Pentax bodies (D, DS, K10d, K100d, K7)..

I shoot with a Panasonic G2 these days but still mount a few A series Pentax lenses on it (along with voigtlander M mount) and am eager to keep up to date with what Pentax are doing, but after being burnt with the k7 I am going to be much slower to return..

In a lot of cases I believe it is on the distributors side, it isn't always the retailer.. Though I am sure that goes on too..

Item for Sale
Pentax FA* 80-200mm

Asking Price
AUD$900

Item Location
Melbourne, Australia

Item Description
OK here is a Pentax FA* 80-200mm f2.8 in good optical and mechanical condition and fair cosmetic condition.

Cosmetics
As you can see in the pics there are a few scuff marks on the body of the lens, but just cosmetic things..

Optics
On the front element there are a few very small and light scratch marks, they are nowhere near big enough to effect optical quality and I am pretty sure they are more minor than you probably think ;).. I was unable to get a shot to highlight them, nothing to worry about in my opinion.

Mechanical
Very good mechanical quality, arpeture blades are snappy and clean, AF is working fine and zoom mechanism (although a little loosened with age) is working fine too..

Sale includes lens, caps, hood and tripod mount (attached in photos).

I am in Melbourne and happy to meet up for inspection and/or pickup, and for people outside Melbourne I would prefer to ship within Australia, but we will see how the sale goes..

In-Body SR vs. In-Lens SR Pros and Cons?
Posted By joele
Replies: 32
Yeah it does depend on the lens, the nikon lenses I used with vr I couldn't see much advantage over Pentax SR (but they were 100mm or shorter).. But the Canon 70-200/4 IS has fantastic stabilization, much better than SR for sure.. The 300/f4 IS also beats my old F*300 using SR, but it isn't as good as the 70-200 IMO.. Its all about consistancy...

Really? not having a go at you, but I find that strange that if someone is not Hetro or Christian they are in daily fear for their lives???

Maybe ostracised by certain groups if in a small country town (I could imagine that here) but fear for your life sounds living in a theocracy or under fascism..

Please check The San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea, Israel is not committing piracy at all or breaking international laws. But it does sound good when you compare them to Somali pirates, be damned with how rational the comparison is ;-)

As for the peaceful people on the flotilla..

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/w ... 142977.ece

"Despite their claims to be an entirely peaceful organisation, The Foundation for Human Rights, Freedoms and Humanitarian Relief (IHH) has a history of involvement in Islamic extremism around the world and has been linked with an attempted bombing of an airport in the US.

Paper by the Danish Institute for international studies about this and other 'charity groups' - http://www.diis.dk/graphics/Publication ... -7.web.pdf

Based on that Israel had a fair suspicion to justify boarding the ships under he San Remo Manual mentioned earlier when they refused to be inspected by either Israel or Egypt.

But those 'guerrilla fighters' are the official governments militia???

The situation for the Palestinian people is horrible I agree with that, their own leaders sell them down the river. Arafat at camp david comes to mind. And the surrounding Arab nations care nothing for them either, they are just a political pawn..

To the original question; if Iran had done it in the same situation, I think it would also have made the news, but I doubt it would have been front page for 3 days as it was in Australia in almost every paper.. Hell, Iran has been elected on to the Women's rights council in the UN and that never made the news at all here, and I think we all know how ridiculous that is.

If your not a wedding portrait photographer AND you are looking at Canon I would suggest saving some money on the body and going for a 50d.. Great camera, dropping in price at the moment thanks to 7d, and I think for general use far more practical than a 5d.

Yeah I love it a friend has one, I bought the 70-200/4 IS first, I am saving for the 300/4 IS at the moment.

Yeah that annoyed me, they moved production to a cheaper country and then put the prices up.. The 15/4 costs over a thousand dollars here (US$0.90 = AUD$1) so thats insane, and the DA*55 I could buy or I could buy both the canon and nikon (AF-S) 50/1.4s and have money left over. (For canon I have bought the Sigmalux 50/1.4).

We don't all live in america if you look on the left hand side (next to 'location') you can see I live in Australia...

OK how about a like for like prime. Canon 300mm f4 IS vs Pentax DA*300.. Both around 2.5pound and both within $100 of $1200 on bhphoto (but again in Australia the pentax is actually more expensive). The point being having IS built in does not add 'considerable weight' to the lens as earlier claimed, which is what I was saying in my comparison, I just threw in the prices comment as that is also relevant to where I live (I did say 'here' and have my location clearly displayed on the left of ever post)..

I recently left for other reasons although I did get a fullframe as it was damn cheap to me, I got an APSc camera also, Canon 5d and 50d..

I did leave before for Nikon but it just didn't grow on me and I came back to see if I enjoyed the k7 more than I did the k10d (I didn't much). I am enjoying using Canon a lot so far so think I may be set there..

For me I understand and agree it won't make me a better photographer at all, but it is also about enjoying the process, and if things like flash reliability (with some lenses) and AF in low light frustrate me that spoils my enjoyment.. Plus something like the 70-200/4 L IS cost me much less money in Australia than the Pentax 60-250/4 I wanted, actually about $400 less for a new one, even bigger difference for second hand. Not to mention better availability and third party support..

I don't think it is fair to say VR in lens (IS etc) is going to make the zooms much heavier!

My 70-200/f4 IS L is only 760gm, vs the closest Pentax alternative 60-250/4 which is 1040gm, the pentax costs a LOT more here too.. Now the Pentax has slightly more reach but still I don't see how VR/IS is adding that much weight. Actually a better test is the 70-200/4 non IS weights 705gm, so IS seems to add 55gm to the weight of a lens...

As for 5dMmII AF, well it is not the best AF in general if it is the same as the 5d AF system (which apparently it is). My 50d AF is much better than my 5d AF.. Not to take anything away from the D700, it is the top of the heap and all are better in lowlight than my K7 was, even though the K7 has an AF assist light and the Canons do not. It is the one area I think Pentax should focus on (excuse the pun) for their next releases..

Item for Sale
Pentax FA* 31mm in Australia

Asking Price
AUD$870

Item Location
Melbourne, Australia

Item Description
Well we all know this lens no need to describe its qualities. Sadly as I am selling up all my Pentax gear this is going up for sale too (best for last I guess).

The glass and mechanics are perfect not a mark... Always had a protective filter on it when I used it..

The body is excellent there are a couple of tiny marks the largest is shown in one of the shots here, but even it is a hairline scratch in the paint and hardly worth mentioning (the flash shows it up well)..

Comes with the pouch (unused), original caps and in the original box.

This is an Assembled in Vietnam copy but that isn't a concern, I had problems when I bought it with it being soft at all apetures, it went back to Pentax Japan they replaced an optical group and rebuilt it to their factory specs and it is great now. Easily as good as my mates made in japan version.

P.S. For Australians I am happy to send receipt with it, it is still under Australian warranty until October.

I have included pictures of the lens in the post and below are links to two recent full size photos taken at f1.8 and f2.2 (with flash) to show how sharp it is. These were processed without any USM (sharpening) added, EXIF intact..
