I inherited a silver MG from my dad and more recently a very nice silver K2 with 35/2, 50/1.4, 50/4 macro plus tubes. Still to run a film through the K2 but really looking forward to it.

Personally I like Provia 400X. In low light that may be a better option. If shooting on 120 the grain is not to be worried about, on 35mm it depends on your personal taste.

Thanks. In the last few days I have downloaded a few raw files from a review website, and they were very disappointing. Nothing wrong with the camera I think, just really bad exposure by the reviewer - clipping both highlights and shadows. There seemed to be the possibility to raise the shadows a fair bit, so this was just sloppy technique I think. I cannot see much real-world difference between the IQ from my K100D and the Q, although there are of course other big differences. I am very keen to see the new Q10 now, as it should be even better.

Not the best quality video around, but it shows the focus peaking on the Q10. It surely will be in the production firmware. You Tube |

Looking good indeed. I struggled in the end to justify the Q, but the addition of the 06 lens helps to make a better case for the system. Really looking forward to seeing what the wide angle ends up being.

Just wondering, are the Q / Q10 DNG files fully 'open' and readable with any version of ACR or are they (like proprietary formats) dependent on the latest versions of the software being installed?

Hmm, hope the peaking makes it into the shipping firmware, that would make a major difference for me.

That's very cool! I never saw the point of 360 degree sweep type pans as they are far too narrow, but this makes a lot of sense. No space for it in my camera bag though - far too big.

Hmm - for me the K-5 is a great camera that just doesn't feel right to me. I've small hands but find a 645NII handles so much better. Hard to explain but each to their own. The K-5 still feels much better than just about everything else out there at the moment.

Good to hear more feedback. Even in the limited time I had the Q in-hand (less than ten minutes) I realised that it was a whole lot of fun. Just like the first time I picked up a 645Nii, and it just felt right. It's under £300 here again so I am sorely tempted. The double lens kit makes the most sense but at £450+ it'll be harder to sneak past the financial controller (my wife!).

Thanks for a very informative reply. When you say you limit the Q to ISO 3200 is that in good light to enable a faster shutter speed for birds/macro or is that in lower light?
Whilst I didn't initially mention it low-light performance is important to me in some ways. My Coolpix did well for me inTuscany except for inside churches/museums where colour, noise and shake all became issues even at ISO 800. I certainly see practical benefits to using the Q for this type of indoor shot. I don't see the Q as a silver bullet solution for this but the depth of field and lens quality even wide open suggests usable results may be achieved. An extra stop of light plus a stop or two of ISO performance could be very helpful. Also the K100D's shutter isn't the quietest!
Thanks again.

I appreciate your intention, but in a visual media such as photography numerical data is moot. Consider film - film 'a' may have higher resolution and smaller grain than film 'b', but that doesn't mean pictures taken with 'b' are 'worse' than 'a'.
Fact is, you can take decent pictures with any camera. What matters is how they make you feel.
I don't expect the Q to be 'better' than the K100D, but I'd like a good idea of how and where it differs in the way it renders an image. That's the kind of info I need from first hand users, not lab testers.

That's a very very helpful response, thank you.
I'm fully aware of the effect on DoF that a smaller sensor gives. I will be keeping the K100D (and my 35mm SLRs) for narrow DoF work. Again I know I can't expect such a small sensor to reproduce slight colour and contrast differences, but it is good to hear in your reply as it shows you are being objective and not just gushing about the Q :). As regards sensor aspect ratio, I much prefer 4:3 to 3:2 so that's not a problem for me at all.
I have often thought that my Nikon Coolpix is mostly sufficient (in terms of IQ) for my digital needs - pictures here to illustrate the type of images I would be shooting. I know how to get the best out of it but even so would appreciate the manual controls available with the Q. Where it lacks is in the lens and noise, both areas where the Q is streets ahead. I would typically shoot between ISO100 and 400, going up to 800 in extreme circumstances with the Coolpix or 1600 on the K100D. I don't expect the Q to beat K100D at 1600, but I would expect it to be usable. The high ISO test shots I took in a store before Christmas seem to indicate ISO2500 is nearly usable for me. I went back yesterday to try side by side through the full ISO range but they no longer stock the Q :(.
Good to hear about the kit lens quality. As a concept I'd prefer a Q with tiny primes but I think the twin lens kit (supplemented with a fisheye and the forthcoming tele-zoom) would be ideal for my purposes. I thoroughly enjoyed the Q when I tried it in-store; it is probably the most fun digital camera I have ever used. You can't put a price on that really.

I've been looking at the Q for some time now and find little to disappoint. My idea is that the Q could cover the vast majority of my digital (everyday walkaround/travel) needs, and I have my film cameras for ultimate quality (medium and large format, tripod based landscape/architectural stuff).
At the moment I use a K100D, which whilst ageing is still very capable when used carefully. Does anyone here have experience of both Q and K100D to compare performance in photographic terms (especially 18-55 v 5-15)?
I'm not interested in DxO or MTF technical arguments - just real world use.
Thanks. :)

Any chance that some of you lucky Q owners could post some lens reviews? I'm keen to hear an owner's perspective on the lenses rather than just a professional reviewer's. Thanks!

I'd like the white (I think...) but would take yellow over silver or black, which seem to be my (UK based) choices. If the grip is just rubber I am hoping they do launch a full colour selection. Ideally I'd have a white body with blue grip/cover.

-How would you rate the look overall?
4 out of 5. I'd prefer more choice of colours (blue please!) and a one-tone option instead of default two-tone. But I like the chunkiness and proportions. It's grown on me over the last five hours. -Does the 40mm fit the camera well?
Looks a bit silly to me. The Ltd wasn't that much bigger, but for cost purposes I think they have done a great job. Apparently only £50 extra for the lens kit over body only. -Are you planning on buying one based on what you've read about it in the official announcement?
Very tempted to go body only to supplement/replace my K100D. I'd like to know the lens roadmap (both regular K and XS) but that won't be a clincher. If I can get a good deal with the XS lens I might just plump for that over the body only. -In buying a camera, how important is the look compared to the features? Very important, somewhat important, or unimportant?
Looks are very important. Of course functionality/ergonomics come first but if two equally good cameras in those respects are available at the same price the aesthetics will always be the selling point. -How do you think people who've never heard of Pentax would react to this camera?
Poorly. There may be a few gadget geeks who love its 'non-camera' styling but they won't be buying into the brand. It seems already that Pentax has attracted widespread derision from measurbators at DPR etc for not looking the way their boring black boxes do. Good riddance to them, but it is a fine line that Pentax treads, as anything different needs to still be attractive enough to the mainstream to survive.

I haven't used mine for a few months, but I have had a lot of joy from it. Rollei Retro 400 was a great everyday film for it. Follow the link for some pictures. Holga 120GFN - a set on Flickr |
