Hey Ira,

You need to hang in there; tomorrow really IS a New Day and things can always improve!

I'm physically impaired, been out of work for 6 years, ran through my savings, sold just about everything that I can sell except big ticket items, and like much of the rest of the country, money is tight for prospective buyers.

Were it not for a last minute loan from two cousins, I would have been in danger of losing my house. My CFD holders are great people and a brother and sister in Christ, but I can't expect them to pay my way for me....but the Lord, as usual, provided.

I know it's hard many times, but keep thinking of what you still have: food, a warm place to stay, clothes on your back, and a love of one of the most personally rewarding endeavors: digital photography!

Keep trying and don't give up!

Soon as I can financially afford it, I'm going to become a Site Supporter: the people and admin here are stellar people and deserve to be supported.

Cheers Ira and Happy New Year!

Hey there,

Loved the shot and the color is truly amazing. I wanted to know though why you chose such a high ISO with all the light that is normally available in a hockey arena.

I shoot rodeos, specializing in bull riding, and sadly the way rodeos run, the bulls don't leave the chutes until (on average) about an hour later than they're scheduled to start whirling and bucking!

What this means is that a 16:00 start is usually 17:00-17:30 and dusk is only an hour, hour and a half away.

I always use my stock 70mm-300mm F4-F5.6 and usually at infinity focus, as 9 times out of 10 I'm unable to get close to the chutes-which the long established and healthy photographers do by actually being in the arena (I'm physically impaired and couldn't dodge a bull to save my life, much less out run one.).

I do my best to shoot at ISO 400 or less, thereby minimizing noise problems as much as possible because I need to shoot at 1/2000 or fast on about 90% of the bulls and broncs (both saddle and bareback), closer to 1/3000 is 99.9% reliable for the 'money' shots.

I'm still shooting with my K10D, so I have to live with the limitations of low light shooting of the K10D, given my severely limited budget in existing glass.

Had I my druthers, I'd have that new Sigma 170-300 F2.8, or better yet, the Sigma 200-500 F2.8, either lens with a 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverters.

I do all my rodeo shoots in RAW, using Bibble 4.9 and then PSP 2.0 Ultimate, though I'm looking at both Bibble 5.0 and PSP 3.0 upgrades during the coming year.

Basically I just wanted to know about your choices given the shooting environment.

No, I'm not a 'professional', I'm just starting out doing shoots for a sport I dearly love and in which my family has been involved for decades, so I'm trying to learn as much as possible from as many sources as possible.

Anyone else reading this who wants to 'chime in' please go right ahead; like I said, I'm in FULL learning mode, so lay it on me!

Cheers to you and again, a really great shot with some truly amazing color.

Hey there,

Well, despite how things are currently with my health, that shot of your system in the field really made me want to head down to Salt Creek and take a few shots of the local Water Rat population!

The industrious little fellows (Muskrats actually) should provide for some quality frames.

Winter will be here soon and my body doesn't do well with it anymore...which is a pity, because Wyoming fauna provide for some really great wildlife shots!

Cheers and I look forward to seeing more of your work.

K-7 Speculations (moved over from review section)

Hello All,

Didn't see this bit about the upcoming K7 until after I'd queried Adam about any new Pentax cameras.

I'm elated and disappointed about the K7 at the self-same time: elated at some very clear and distinct technical improvements over both the K10D (which I own) and the K20D (which I do not own); particularly the doubling of shutter speed top range, while actually making use of ISO's at 800 and above functional and useful in Real World situations.

I shoot Rodeos, Mud Bog Events, and other actions sports, and much of the time at low light/very low light levels, and do so w/o extra lighting.

The ability to shoot at ISO 800 at 1/2000 or higher is REALLY exciting (especially when I've got a hot bull and a just as hot Bull Rider fighting it out for victory at a Rodeo) to me......should the K7 allow me to move to ISO 1600 and maintain at least a 1/2000 w/o significant Noise, would well and truly be the Feline's Vocalization!!!!

Anywho.....I like what I see, but I'd like it even better if they offered a K7 model w/o the idiot Video Mode (I'm NOT into shooting pro video at all....if I were, I'd fork out $2k or $3k for a serious SONY.....Pentax needs to stay focused on DSLR/35mm Tech Stream and NOT video!!!!!

I'm also disappointed that Pentax didn't move up to the 19Mp-22Mp range, which is what I'd been waiting for....something to at least compete with the Nikanons......I'd be willing to fork out $2k for a K7 with the specs it has now, but in the pixel range I mentioned above, with a few more attributes (MUCH faster AF in lenses, perhaps with a new line of AF lenses with motors in the glass, to surpass the Nikanons in speed (you'd be amazed at how fast a bull can spin/change direction, when trying to loft a Bull Rider from his back).

Anywho...if the K7 is the only choice I've got in the Pentax line, then I'll have to stick with it........I refuse to transition to the Sony DSLR, even though it has a model in the pixel range I desire: the Pentax is much more survivable while shooting, in the environs in which I shoot (really dusty/rainy/wet conditions).

I look forward to reading more of your posts on the K7.

Cheers.

Howdy all,

Well......I too received the dreaded 'post or get deleted' warning....so here I am and I hope you all can relate.

Since I've taken the time to post here, I'll see if I can attach a photo, which I hope some of you may like.

Here goes.
