Both great cameras and no wrong choices! Have you seen the K-S2? I like it's features and svelte size. I read positives on it's IQ too.

BUYING MY FIRST DSLR: K-50 or K-S1?

I liked the K-S1 and used it for a few months..great camera. That said, the ergonomics of the grip was just too small for me, especially with the Sigma 18-250 on it..just not comfortable. Sold it and using the K-50. Coming from a Nikon D90 which is a great camera, the K-50 is just a great all around camera with it's 100% OVF view, two control wheels, focus peaking, and weather resistance. Very happy with Pentax. If possible, see if you can play with a K-S1 in store to see how it feels in hand. It's a very well built camera. Also look at the K-S2 as that camera looks to be another great choice and a bit smaller than the K-50. Good luck!

EDIT: just read you got the K-50! Good choice and wishing you many "keepers"!

Just a follow up: I bought the lens and wow, it appears as new and am very happy with it's performance. Although I've only shot 20 or so images with it, I see no softness at any length, focus is pretty fast, build quality is very good, and for a 210mm reach, it's on the smaller side of comparable lenses.

Found this at a camera shop and would appreciate anyone's comments as to it's sharpness and functionality on my K50. It looks to be in excellent condition and made in Japan. Price is $75. Thoughts? Thank you.

Thanks for the suggestions and fast replies. I'm taking it to a friend who is a seasoned pro (former Nat Geo staff shooter) who will clean it for me. I know his weak spot..Sierra Nevada Pale Ale...lol.

K50 With OVF Problem

My K50 is only a few months old and really like it. There is something that looks like dirt or some other contaminant in the OVF that does not show in the images. Lens is clean as is the eyepiece, so it must be internal. Since new to Pentax (except for my lovable ME Super from many years ago) and could anyone comment on whether this is a warranty covered item? It's not been in any dust and kept in a clean camera bag. Can anyone comment on warranty turnaround time? Assuming I cover shipping to them, but do they cover return? And they repair my camera and not send me a refurbished one? Many thanks Pentaxians!

Wrong, there is more to say: WM is our country's largest private employer 2.1 million (1% of total US employed) and is the largest corporate giver to charities with close to 1 billion annually. Compare that to Apple who finally gave a paltry $50 million two years ago due to media pressure outing them as the stingiest corporation. What's interesting is that in order to work at a Apple store, the "genius" (their term) employee earns a average of $11-13. a hour, but are required to have a 4 year degree. And since they are Apple, they get a pass in the media..go figure. Apple employs around 42,000 people in the US with 90% of their products being made in China. That 90% represents a far higher number than what WM sells in their stores. But's it's Apple that is a darling..go figure.

Just last night I finished a outstanding book by Laura Hilderbrand called Unbroken. It's the true story of Louis Zamperini, a WW2 pilot, and his incredible survival on a raft for 4 weeks and then held/tortued in Jap prison camps. My God, the brutality they inflicted. The numbers are atrocious in that 37% of all prisoners died in those camps vs 1% who were held by the Germans. A must read.

And yes, our greatest generation for sure.

I live in Sacramento and happy I found this forum. New to Pentax again as my favorite take anywhere (usually backpacking) go anywhere camera was my ME Super. I've been shooting my K50 for 6 months and love it! I've been shooting Nikon dslr's since 2006 and have a herd of others: M4/3, Fuji X10, Fuji XS-1, a new Pentax XG-1 (with a focus problem), and a few other p&s cams. I really love them all and use them often in my adventures of hiking, camping, kayaking, and mt. biking.

I have been on many trails all over our Sierra-Nevada mountains, on our Pacific Coast, Redwood empire, into Nevada, with a trip to Mexico every year. And yes, I still work, but not at the frantic pace of a few years ago.

I love the images posted here..many absolute beauties! If anyone would like any suggestions on what to see in N. California, feel free to contact me as I've spent my life growing up here and may be able to help.

Happy flowers from my front yard below.

Is the Pentax XG-1 really a Kodak?

The XG-1 is identical to the Kodak Pixpro AZ522 and not the AZ521. I've shot both and they are very good small sensor bridge cams. Sadly my XG-1 has focus problems and is being returned.

Steve, I came here looking for answers on the XG-1 and have no agenda. I shoot a K50 and love it. Better check your zoom range numbers as this one has massive zoom at 52X optical or 24-1248mm equivalent. I got off the phone with Pentax/Ricoh and they did not have a tech to even address this camera. Person I spoke to was a customer service rep who suggested I just buy their DSLR...lol. There has been no firmware issued or being worked on according to him.
This appears to be a sister camera (possible twin) of the Kodak PIXPRO AZ522 of which I have shot and it's a fine camera with solid focus at all lengths. I bought this one as a gift to my daughter based on it's cheap price of $188. and Pentax reliability and performance. I do see the AZ522 is made in China and the XG-1 is made in Malaysia so different factories, but menu's, specs, and overall layout are identical.
The reason I doubt it's defective is that it mirrors the problem(s) of the first poster here and from another user I found this forum with Google when searching for focus problems with the camera. No agenda from me other than pointing out it's problems. The positives are that it's well made, images at 100-400ISO are sharp with really nice saturation, able to quickly focus from macro to the 300/350mm range is fine, but no focus past that..maddening. I suspect Pentax will let this one fade away like their previous and out of production X-5 model. Time to move on with a different camera and thank for the suggestions.

XG-1 focus issue

Experienced photographer here and just took delivery of my nice power zoom, XG-1 bridge camera. My first favorable impression went quickly (and sadly) downhill. Two major problems: this camera WILL NOT focus at any object over 350-450mm! I have tried P, A, T, and Auto and it refuses to focus..just the out of focus red triangle. I have focus set to continuous focus and it still will not focus in either continuous on or off. I've tried different metering from Area, Center, and Spot and still no focus. And to make matters worse, every time the camera is turned on/off, the continuous on is then turned off! What a absolute disaster this camera's software is.
Since it's Saturday morning and Ricoh/Pentax are closed, I will wait until Monday morning to see if a firmware update has been issued and if not, Amazon gets a return and Pentax gets a bad review for this camera. Why they released this camera with this major fail to focus problem is very disappointing and does not speak well of Pentax..at all.

For comparison, I've owned both Canon SX40 and SX50 and both are pretty much bullet proof. I had a Nikon P510 that was a very good camera with no issues. I currently own a Fuji XS-1 and it's a great camera to shoot, but has half the reach of others at 26X optical. It's given me some excellent images, but I was looking for a bit more reach and a smaller form camera as the Fuji is big and easily DSLR size..about equal to my K50.

Sorry for the cold, hard, and ugly facts on the XG-1, but it's a half baked disaster as is.
